Chapter 6: A Worried Mother

"Max I don't understand what's wrong with him. It's been a week since the fever went down, but he doesn't respond to anything I say." On the verge of tears, Amelia held Maxwell tight, trying to stay strong. She had been told parenting would be hard, but this felt torturous for her. Her baby boy was fine until the fever, but since it hit, Argento had been despondent, and any food or drink had to be transfused via tubes. Two doctors had been called already, but both said it was a simple fever-induced coma, and that they weren't sure when he would awaken. With the third doctor coming soon, hope was slipping as they were unsure if their child would even be able to wake up.

"What if Argento never gets better? Oh, Gods! I'm a horrible mother." Unable to hold it back anymore, Amelia bursts into quiet sobs as Maxwell painfully guides them to the couch. The number of times he has seen his wife cry in the past week was too much for him; how was he supposed to protect his family when his son is comatose and his wife is distraught? To make matters worse Maxwell blamed himself every day since the fever because he had been playing with Argento in the yard and assumed that's where he got it.

At the sound of the doorbell, Amelia stands up slowly and puts her hands over her eyes for a second, with a flash of gold she removes her hands, and there is no trace of her crying. It wasn't very healthy, but it was a habit to hide weaknesses whenever they arose. Once the door was opened, a gorgeous woman in her thirties and a doctor's uniform was outside the house.

"Welcome Dr. Cassinova, thank you for making time out of your day for this." Raising her hand, Amelia shook the outstretched and fair hand in front of her, who gently shakes it back.

"You can call me Laela, and it's no problem; I only hope that I can be of some help. As a mother myself, I know I would move mountains for my child. Speaking of," Laela turned around and ushered in a little girl, about 4-5 years old. "Come here, Ivy. I hope you don't mind; I couldn't find anyone to take care of her."

"That's no problem at all, we'd be happy to have the both of you." Crouching down to be at eye level with the small girl hiding behind her mother's leg, Amelia smiled. "Hello there, what's your name?"

"My neme is Ivy." With a small childish lisp, Ivy leans a little away from her mother to get a better view of the woman in front of her.

"How old are you, Ivy?"

"I'm 'dis many!" Proudly holding up four fingers, she smiles brightly at getting a small chuckle from both of the mothers.

"That's wonderful Ivy! You know, I have a son your age; he's not very well, and that's why your mommy came to help him." With a sad smile to hide the pain, Amelia is taken by surprise when she felt a small thump from Ivy running at her and hugging her.

"Mommy is magic! She'w be abwe to hewp for sure!" Although she was too young to comprehend the pain Amelia was in, Ivy instinctively knew something was wrong and tried to make her feel better. Having been reminded of Argento's hugs full of childish vigor, tears began bubbling in Amelia's eyes. She didn't know why, but Ivy gave her a warmth that hurt just as much as it gave her exactly what she needed.

Quickly pulling herself together, and with another small flash of gold over her eyes that Laela didn't miss, she pulls Ivy away to smile at her. "How embarrassing, not bringing you two in. Come in, I'll start making some drinks. What do you want, Ivy?"

"Orange juice!" With her excited giggling, Ivy skipped into the house with Amelia while Laela simply smiled. Even before Ivy hugged Amelia, Laela could tell she was in immense pain.

'It seems bringing Ivy along was the right choice after all' Walking into the quaint home in front of her, Laela finds it might be worse than she thought as there is a somber, depressed air that was suffocating the light from the otherwise beautiful home.

Laela sat down with the couple and began drinking the tea Amelia prepared, while they gave her more details on what happened before, during, and since the coma hit. After a few minutes of discussion, she sat there to think about what it could be before finishing her tea and standing up.

"Where would Argento be?"

"He's down the hall; it'll be the first door on your right." Laela made her way to the room with hopes of being able to help Argento; she wanted to bring life back to the obviously loving family.

Reaching his room, Laela lightly pushes open his door, and there on the queen-sized bed was a young boy with silver hair. Approaching Argento carefully, Laela does some standard medical procedures with no result. Once nothing could be found, Laela reaches out and touches Argento's head, and a soft glow of dark green began to permeate the air around them. To Laela, the world seemed to go dull as Argento's body became an incredibly detailed scan and blueprint that pointed out anything that could be out of place.

After disregarding the majority of the body that was perfectly fine, Laela eventually settled on the head of Argento. Within his head, she found two conflicting rhythms that both resembled heartbeats. After studying it for a while, she could only conclude that there were actually two separate auras battling; for what that battle was for she didn't know. This was impossible because a living organism could only hold one aura; not known to many people, this has been tested not too long ago, and it was shown to be disastrous to any participating living organism.

Withholding the information about the potential danger this poses, Laela left the room and went to give the parents something, even if it wasn't positive to them. When she got there, Amelia was burning the rug with her pacing and Maxwell could be seen nervously bouncing his whole world in time with his leg. Seeing her come out, the nervous wreck of a couple stops what they are doing to intently focus on whatever is to be said by the doctor.

What Laela didn't notice, was that as she left Argento's room, a small, dark green, almost black, blur went into Argento's room. Glancing around the first boy's room she's ever been in, Ivy gently roams and touches the objects about the room. She goes over to the bookshelf, took out a book or two before putting them back; went to the toy bin to look at his toys, and then finally she went towards the mirror and starts to make silly faces until she notices a slight silver shimmer behind her.

Turning to face the shimmer, Ivy finds a boy her age lying on the bed. Walking to his side, she is fascinated by his silver hair, which was the same color as her eyes. "Pwetty~" Reaching out to touch his hair, Ivy's eyes begin to lightly glow as her silver aura flares ever so slightly, and the same happens for Argento's golden aura. As soon as her hand brushes his head, a spark flies through the both of them, causing their auras to visibly flare for a second before they dim once more.

"Ow!" With a small pout, Ivy holds her finger close to her eyes that were beginning to go back to normal, finding an intellectual curiosity within herself that wasn't there before. Before she can explore further, fast footsteps are heard rushing down the hall as three figures emerge through the door.

"What happened? Are you okay?" Laela knelt to Ivy's eye level, hoping for the usual honest four-year-old answer.

"I saw the room, and I went into it, and I thought his hair was pwetty so I touched it and lights flashed like *whoosh* and he shocked me." With a few exaggerated movements and noises that were beyond adorable, Ivy was double-checked by her mother before she moved on to check on Argento, but she seems to miss her daughter's brighter, more inquisitive eyes as her daughter's blueprint showed recent signs of aura activation.

With a complicated face, Laela stands to face the parents. "I think their aura's interacted."

"What does that mean?" Amelia could be seen growing more worried as more unknowns happened to her son.

"Well, both of them show recent signs of aura activation, and since neither can use a semblance or other aura-related items, I believe that once Ivy touched Argento, this "spark" might have been their aura's clashing?"

"Why is that a question? Didn't you just say that my son already has auras fighting inside him??"

"Well, yes, but-"

"No buts! Is my son safe or not?!" Noticing the growing argument between the two mothers, Maxwell begins to move forward to stop them from saying or doing something that might be regretted later, but before he can take a full step they all hear a soft groan coming from the bed.

"Mom?" Tears can be seen quickly leaving Amelia's eyes as she practically lunged at the groggy and surprised Argento.

"Oh my baby boy, I'm so happy you're okay!"
