Chapter 10: Plans To Stop The Equalists

The news was on, and the cameraman wasn't shy about showing the desiccated bodies of the equalist victims. Only bones and bits of cloth remained, just enough to show the Agni Kai Triad gang sign stitched into a strip of cloth. The camera paused a gang sign before moving to show the rest of the basement below a bar on the wrong side of town. Long scratches lined the stairs leading out of place and blackened edges from fire bending during the struggle. Most of the place had survived the struggle without being burned. The camera panned to the bar to show empty bottles of boos; the equalists had drained every drop of drink in the place.

I glanced over to see Asami and Hao on the edge of their seats. Korra clung to me, her eyes glued to the tv while her hands shook. It was like she was there reliving what had happened. My hand absently brushed her back while I thought about the situation.

Even if I reached fuck, it and unleashed my full might on Republic City. Some of the injected equalists would escape. One of the first rules of genocide, you never really get them all. There would always be a few members hunting and waiting for the chance to strike. In this case, doing something without the people's will would have the opposite effect. While the equalists only attacked benders, non-benders didn't feel involved.

"We have to do something," Korra said.

"I'll talk to my father. Future Industries has a lot of government contracts, and Korra is the Avatar; the council will listen."

I grabbed Korra's hand. "Be careful; when you step into the spotlight, you paint a target on your back. While the Avatar is known to be in Republic City, you haven't done much to stand out yet. By taking a leadership role, that will change. They will target you and Tenzin's family. Some might even take a trip to the Southern Water Tribe to go after your family." I said.

"Should she do nothing while the city eats itself?" Hao Meng said.

I swirled the tea in my cup and thought out loud. "They aren't benders," I said.

"What does that have to do with anything?"

"Know your enemy. They will rest far from the sun during the day. Our enemies are equalists, so they aren't benders. If we can find their underground hiding place and seal them in, they'll cannibalize themselves." I said and sipped my tea. "That could make this situation even worse. The survivors would become even stronger and dig themselves out. Maybe we should evacuate the city and bomb it." I said.

"That isn't feasible." Hao Meng said.

"It's inevitable unless something changes."

Korra snorted and turned her tired blue eyes on me. Really that was a dastardly thing for her to do. Now, I couldn't resist helping her.

"What would you do if you were in charge of the city?" That was an interesting question.

"At this moment, they are more vulnerable to damage than they will ever be again. Even the slightest injury could doom them."

"Wait, how do you know that?" Asami asked.

Korra scratched her head. "He knows the guy who invented it. The drug originally came from a tree in the spirit world."

Asami stood up like she was ready to act on something. "Where is this inventor now?"

While I could text them, I didn't feel like reaching for my phone or using the system. "Somewhere in earth kingdom selling his drug to the highest bidder. Before you ask, no, there isn't a cure. It can only be stopped at its earliest stages. Removing it after only a few hours will kill the host."

"Have you told the police anything yet?" Asami asked.

"No, it wouldn't do them any good. My friend is the vindictive type; he will drop his price if the police give him trouble. Normally he would just sell to anyone willing to pay and warn them of the side effects."

"Like eating human flesh." Hao Meng said.

"No, that isn't a side effect. During the adaption process, the host needs to consume a vast amount of food to avoid mutation. If they don't, they will feel like they are starving to death, and anything will do when that happens. Humans are also very plentiful in a city; they could just as easily satisfy their hunger with mooselions."

"I'm glad the side effect is only being hungry enough to eat human flesh. That makes me feel so much better. Why did this have to happen?" Hao asked.

"Because my boyfriend has horrible friends." Korra insisted.

"That isn't inaccurate. I would suggest not going out at night if you can help it."

"Do they have any weaknesses we could take advantage of?" Asami asked.

I thought about it for a moment, then took a few AK-308s out of my inventory along with a couple cases of 7.62 x51mm NATO. A few fabricator drones were on sale right now that could mine materials and supply all the ammunition and weapons we could want. I had been hesitant to make such a purchase before, but now I felt it could turn into a promising investment.

"Let's set up some targets, and I'll show you have these things work."

"I don't understand how they will help us against the equalists. Even if they fire something, the equalists can dodge bending." Asami said.

After setting up a few targets Tenzin and his family came to watch what I was doing. Once I had a few old gourds up on posts, I jammed a magazine in the weapon and loaded the first round. The first round fired, and Meelo jumped 30ft. The gourd had a hole in it, and I pulled the trigger again, hitting beside my first shot. No amount of kick would matter to me, but the gun was fun to shoot. I flipped the weapon into full auto and drew a smiley face on the gourd.

"This is a big game-changer. I want you to partner with future industries. We can set you up in one of our old factories for a small stake in your company and get you a team of workers and supplies. If we can get these weapons in the hands of our police and the citizens, then we can turn this around."

"Weapons in the hands of every citizen. Are you out of your mind? There will be accidental deaths. Children will think they are toys and shoot themselves or each other. I don't know if I could allow that to pass through the council." Tenzin said.

"It will change the dynamic between benders and non-benders," Hao said.

"More than what most people would like but less than you think. Injected equalists with these will be more dangerous than normal civilians with them. But there are fewer equalists than citizens. But, of course, the people in charge have to be more warry with an armed populous. If they betray the people, they won't get away with it for long."

"Can these weapons hurt you?" Jinora asked.

Korra smirked at me. She already knew that answer long before Jinora asked it. Jinora was damn perceptive, but Korra had somehow learned when to keep her mouth shut. The only people shocked by this revelation were Asami and Hao.

"Do you remember that fur coat you wore back at the arena?"

Korra didn't miss a beat. "Yeah, I planned to wear it when we return to the Southern Water tribe to show dad. After he gushes over how good it looks on me, I will tell him it's from you."

A small smile played across my face. Korra really did have my back. I shook my head, tossing the fuzzy feelings out for the time being. "This weapon can't punch through that cloak or my workout clothes. It might hurt me if it managed to hit my eye, but it wouldn't kill me or damage my eye. But for the time being, the equalists should still be plenty squishy enough for this weapon to kill them.

Asami and Hao left to give this new information to their parents, and my prospects of becoming a captain of industry increased significantly. However, turning this world into a home base would take time and many resources.

One of the fundamental flaws of this world was its lack of qi. Benders had it in much greater amounts than normal people, but it didn't saturate the air, fill every bite of food, or blast the world from sunlight. That didn't mean it was impossible to facilitate these changes. Some of the hardier plants in my inventory could help add qi to the world. Even wheat seeds from one of the qi-rich planet I trained in could improve the world saturation of qi. But unfortunately, it could take a decade to see a noticeable change.

The injected Equalists had already changed the world saturation. I could sense a slight increase in qi around the city even if I couldn't pinpoint the equalists. The injections were a way for King to quickly terraform a planet for cultivation purposes. Even if most of it was highly specialized for blood, qi neutral qi would naturally flow through the air.

If I wanted to truly settle here, maybe I should release Lotus from my inventory and let her stretch. She would like to explore a new world.

As Asami and Hao's boat vanished in the distance, I turned to Korra and Tenzin.

"I have a dragon in the space where I keep all my stuff. She could protect the island from equalists." I said.

Korra raised an eyebrow. "You have a dragon in your pocket."

"She's a big girl and a little scary, so I'm warning you before releasing her."

"How big is this dragon?" Tenzin asked.

"I want to see the dragon; what's its name," Ikki said.

"Can I ride it?" Meelo asked.

"Her name is Lotus, and she's around 100 meters in length from her last growth spurt. She isn't a normal dragon; she doesn't breathe fire. However, I don't think she would be opposed to letting you ride her if you ask nicely."

My inventory opened wider and taller than it had in a long time. The tip of Lotus's white snout poked through before she moved, revealing her second jaw atop her first. Cold wind blasted out from my inventory gate, nearly throwing the children off their feet. Rows of multiple eyes scanned the world around her as she slithered out of my inventory. She immediately took flight and stretched her wings, circling around as she gained altitude. Cold air blasted the ground as she climbed until she was entirely out of her inventory.

"What a weak world?" Lotus said as she leveled out. "I smell those disgusting parasites in the distance. They should know better than to approach our territory."

Our conversation flowed through our familiar bond. "You've barely been out ten seconds, and you're already establishing territory," I said.

"Did I not just say that, master? And why should I need to establish anything in such a weak world? I am here, and so all that I see is mine. Should I let the parasites know my displeasure?"

"You weren't summoned to deal with them directly. I would like it if you protected this island and the people here."

"She is beautiful," Jinora said.

"Someone has good taste, and the dark-skinned one has your scent all over her. You finally found a proper mate with fine muscles and the awe I deserve. She has my approval. Why protect the others?"

I grabbed Korra's hand. "They are Korra's people, so they're mine now," I said.

"Interesting, then I will keep an eye on them. But, unfortunately, you've kept me in your inventory for so long that my skill might have rusted. So I'm going to hunt."

Lotus said and dove into the nearby water

"Is she tame?" Tenzin said.

I blinked, then remembered that they couldn't hear our conversation. "She's agreed to safeguard this island and the people on it. The plant in the equalists fear her and will fight their hosts if they try to come to this island."

There was always the chance the King bred that fear out of them. But there was a secondary reason for releasing her.

Lotus would also saturate the ocean with mana, the power source for my spells. Our familiar bond allowed me to use magic at all in the first place. I built her. I studied forums, purchased AI codes, sculpted her body, and implanted a mana engine. I created a powerful ally. Through her, mana would be absorbed into numerous fish only to be eaten by other predators. I had done the same by my very existence, and Jinora had to a lesser extent, believed it was possible to use spells.

"Do you have any other surprises?" Korra asked.

"Always," I said and didn't say more.

I entered my system menu and purchased this world of Korra. As an unpopular world in an unpopular setting, I bought it on the cheap. Two menus appeared.

Mana level 0: 0.0001% to next

Qi level 1: 0.01% to next

A highly magical world with gods that played an important role had been at level 2. This world with a separated dimension of spirits was still only a 1 in qi saturation. People could manipulate the elements, but they couldn't raise mountains or pull asteroids from the sky. This world could not yet support pure gods of mana or of qi. So, the saturation needed to be higher. Fortunately, there were no drains from nearby universes yet. But just by raising the level, we could be sucked into other universes and become a part of a cross-over.

I grabbed Korra's hand and looked out over the ocean. Republic City would be fine for now, but the worst is yet to come. The equalists would most likely target food warehouses until their population adapted to the serum. While that happened, the people would cry out for help and demand action from someone they thought would help them. I squeezed Korra's hand and continued to wait as Lotus slowly increased the world's mana saturation.
