Chapter 31: CH:31 When Tides Turn
"Oh! I'm prepared for this!" Says Donatello as he starts digging through his brown duffle bag at his hip. While he does this, the giant monkey starts slowly side stepping towards Don, with a very intrigued expression on his face. As his upper body in still wrapped in Mikey's chain.
"What cha lookin for, bra?" Asks a curious Mikey.
While Donny is still rummaging through his bag he says, "Oh, I know I put it in here... There is it! Anti-Mutagen! I figured that we would probably need it." He says as he pulls out an overly large syringe filled with an orange liquid.
When the monkey sees the syringe, his eyes bulge and he starts to freak out again. April is the first to react and steps up to the monkey's side, putting her hand on his shoulder. As soon as she touches the monkey, he calms down immediately.
April looks in the monkey's eyes and says, "We might be able to cure you. To turn you back into a human. But you have to trust us and be brave enough to take this shot." She finishes gesturing towards Donny.
The monkey takes a deep breath and then does one more step towards Don.
Completely shocked at what I'm seeing, all I can think is, "Holly shit! The beast actually understood her! Maybe his mind isn't totally lost after all, and there really is hope for him."
Donny gives the monkey the shot of anti mutagen in his arm causing the beast to freak out a small bit as he rubs his arm... but nothing happened.
I looked at Don to ask, "Shouldn't that have done something by now?"
Leo scratches the back of his head saying, "Yeah, normally they would've started screaming as they start turn back to normal."
While April is calming the monkey down, Donny holds his chin deep in thought, "Perhaps it didn't work because they tampered with the mutagen. After all, my anti mutagen is based off of the original formula." He suggests. I nodded my head in agreement.
Raph starts to get a bit miffed as he mumbles, "Great. Just great. Ol' turtle luck running true to form." As he crosses his arms over his chest.
April looks back at us and says, "Maybe we should take him back to Dr. Falco? Since he was Rockwell's partner, he might know a bit more about the new formula and might be able to help Rockwell."
This agitates the monkey a bit, but as we have no other choice we all decided to go with April's idea. It took three of the turtles to shove the monkey into the Battle Shell before we could head beck to the lab, and an even bigger struggle to get him in the building let alone in the lab.
After we explained what happened, Falco insisted that we strapped the monkey to the freaky dentist chair, as Donny kept calling it. Since the monkey is starting to go a bit berserk. Screeching and roaring like a trapped wild animal. Falco then gave the monkey a shot of a sedative to relax him, putting him to sleep almost immediately.
As he Strokes the fur on the monkey's head Falco says, "That should calm him down a little. Poor Rockwell."
April steps forward and asks, "Is there any way to get him back to normal?"
Falco gives us a sad apologetic look as he says, "I don't even know where to begin." Then continues to pet the fur on top of the monkey's head as he continues, "But I will see if there is a way to give him some semblance of a normal life."
All I could think is, 'Something about this guy doesn't sit right with me...' As April and I make eye contact with the turtles before we leave, heading back to the lair. Ralph takes off to go pick up pizza and meet us back at home.
Once we get back to the lair, Leonardo goes straight to the dojo to tell Master Splinner what happened as Mikey and April head straight to the kitchen to wait for pizza. Donny first goes to grab his homemade laptop before he joins them.
I wander off to Raph's room to change back into my spunky outfit from earlier this morning. The one with dark green pants and that black long sleeve shirt I tore up with my claws. 'I should probably tamper with a few of my other shirts, since I like this one so much. When I glow, little streaks of light comes out of the sleeve and I look so cool.' I couldn't help but hum to myself as I got dressed, throwing my ninja eye mask on just as I'm leaving the bedroom. I head to the kitchen to wait for pizza with everyone else.
Not long after I grab a sit, Raph shows up with dinner and all we all start digging in...Well, all but Donny, once again, as he is far too consumed by whatever he's doing on his computer.
Leo looks over to April and says with a half a slice of pizza in hand, "Sorry we didn't get any closer to finding your dad, April."
With a kind smile and a bit of pizza sauce on her face, she says, "It's okay. Everything we learn about the Kraang is another piece of the puzzle."
Leo looks a little concerned as he holds his chin and mumbles, "Yeah, but... psychic research? This is one weird puzzle."
Just then Master Splinter walks in to grab a slice of pizza. But before he leaves he turns to April and asks, "I am curious, April. How did you know the monkey was really a human?"
I just shoved a large bite of pizza in my mouth as I hear this question I couldn't help but think as I'm chewing, 'That's exactly what I want to know, I don't even have the ability to discern species. So how can a mere human do that? Although... Her energy is a bit off...' Further increasing my suspicions of April.
Very nonchalantly April looks back at sensei and says, "I don't know, sometimes I just get a feeling about things."
Splinter just says, "A feeling?" More or less to himself and starts to walk away as he mutters, "Hmm. Interesting."
I stared at his back as he left the room. 'Oh, he definitely knows something...' I couldn't help but run the thought in my mind as I try my hardest not to squint at the master.
To take my mind off the subject I look over to see the Donny still hasn't had any pizza. So I ask him, "Hey D, how come you are not eating?"
Without even taking his eyes off the screen he says, "What? Umm, nah. I'm not hungry. Something's been bothering me. Falco said that Rockwell was experimenting on a monkey."
Slightly confused, Mikey just says "and?" knowing full well that there's more to this explanation.
Donny continues, "Well, according to these notes, he never had a monkey in his lab. He was just using samples of monkey DNA."
Leo scratches the back of his head as he says, "We're still not following you."
My eyes widen as I realize what Donny is suggesting and with my gut instinct about the old guy earlier, I had to ask, "Are you suggesting that it was Falco who turn Rockwell into the monkey?"
Making everyone gasp as Donatello just nods as he points at me with a smile on his face saying, "Well something big did brake out of that cage. The thing had large bars and looked to be reinforced."
Getting caught up in the excitement of unraveling the truth, Raph throughs in with wide eyes, "It must have been Rockwell!"
Now Donny's turn to start getting worked up as he says, "Which means Falco put him there and he's been lying to us this whole time!" Ending by slamming his fist down on the counter.
Without another word, the turtles and I decide to rush straight back to that lab and undo our mistake. That is, freeing Rockwell from the clutches of Falco.
