Chapter 18: Interlude: With the chosen one

It had been an hour since they'd learnt that Hagrid had acquired a dragon egg, and an hour since they'd left the distraught giant of a man as he mourned his loss of it. It was honestly quite upsetting, for all three of them, to see the usually jovial man so sad, they hadn't even known he could get that sad. It had, in fact, been so upsetting that the three of them hadn't known what to talk about, when they returned to their dorm room, for a good while.

"Do you guys think it could have been Snape who stole it?" Harry asked Hannah and Susan, breaking the silence that had fallen over their table, getting a look from both of them.

"Look Harry," it was Hannah who replied first, as she looked at him with a tired expression, "I know Snape is horrid towards you for no reason, but that doesn't mean he has to be involved in this."

"I know that, but it's just," Harry exhaled forcefully in frustration as he thought about how to explain it, "look, I read in 'Hogwarts: A History' that it's basically impossible to break into Hogwarts, which means that it was someone already in the castle."

"Uh huh," Hannah nodded, scepticism obvious in her blue eyes, "go on."

"Well, according to Hagrid it happened two days after Christmas," he waited till Hannah nodded at his words, "on the same exact day that we saw Snape leaving the castle in the morning."

"It could have been another student," Hannah pointed out.

"But Snape's the only one who'd have a reason, since dragon blood is really good for potions!" the last words were extenuated by a wild wave of his arm.

"Harry, your really just blaming him for no re-" just before Hannah could finish her sentence however, she was interrupted.

"You know he's actually got a point," of the two turned towards Susan, who for some reason had begun combing her red hair, "I've heard it a couple of times from my aunt, when she'd come back from some particularly bad days at work, about how some potion master had been illegally keeping some dangerous creatures… so yeah, it's possible."

"But that doesn't mean it had to be him!" Hannah finally snapped, after a staring at Susan for a few moments, "I mean he's a teacher for Merlin's sake and that has to mean something, right?"

There's silence at the table, until eventually Susan speaks again and all attention falls on her.

"I told aunt Amelia about how Snape was acting towards Harry and she told me something by accident. I'm not meant to tell anyone, but…" reluctance is clear on her face but, as two pair of eyes drill into her, she finally relents, "… she said that he was a deatheater, alright."

The words were whispered, but they brought another silence fell across the table, this one far colder than the one's before it.

"He worked for Voldemort?" Harry dully asked, even as the other two flinched at the forbidden name, shock clear on his face, "he worked for Voldemort… he's my teacher… Hagrid's dragon egg went missing…"

"Look, Harry, I just said what my aunt said carelessly," Susan tried to reassure, regretting saying anything, "she could have just said things-"

"Dumbledore knew," the still shocked, though rapidly recovering, boy, "he said that the reason Snape was being so nasty was because of some 'past issue' he had with my dad… he worked for the person who killed my dad!"

"Harry!" both Susan and Hannah said at once, getting him to snap out of the funk he was in, before Susan continued, "there's no actual proof that he was working for you-know-who and Dumbledore trusts him."

For a second it looked like he was about to lash out, but after a tense few seconds he just sighed, "fine."

But just as both Hannah and Susan let out a sigh of relief, thinking they had exited the minefield of a conversation they'd started, he continued, "but even if he wasn't working for Voldemort, I'm even more sure that he stole the egg from Hagrid."

Sharing a look, the two girls saw the exasperation in the other's eyes.

CREATORS' THOUGHTS
DoBeDo DoBeDo

So I was going to do a continuation of the main plot. But I realised that there wasn't enough Harry Potter in this Harry Potter (for now) fan fiction.

So anyways, I was trying to show here how Harry being in Hufflepuff has changed things for him. He's a lot more into studying, knows more about the magical world, has different friend and is more assertive/confident.
