Chapter 1: Chapter 1 (Revised)

𝘗𝘢𝘪𝘯

𝘈𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳

𝘍𝘳𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯

These words described the sensations I felt in both body and mind before they slowly subsided as my consciousness roared to life. It felt as if I had awakened from a deep, eternal dream. One which I would not wake up from. I found that the haze clouding my mind disappeared with the opening of my eyes. I found myself in a strange yet interesting location.

Looking down at my hands and the rest of my body, I found myself wearing something completely different than what I had worn- My head ached all of sudden due to the influx of memories which had rushed to the forefront of my mind. This also had an unexpected side effect as emotions that had previously subsided returned in greater strength along with a strange feeling of helplessness.

I paused as I took some time reviewing and processing the memories before I let out a long, empty, maniacal laugh. Had anyone been nearby to hear it then they would have been disturbed by how empty it sounded.

𝘐 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘥!

𝙄 𝙝𝙖𝙙 𝙙𝙞𝙚𝙙 𝙗𝙚𝙘𝙖𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙖 𝙗𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙙𝙮 𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙘𝙠!

While my cause of death seemed a bit cliche, It didn't change the fact that I had been rammed into by a truck that seemingly appeared out of a corner. It wasn't an accident, not by a long shot as I saw the driver's expression while my body had flown before falling into the ground. It was one of anger and hatred which subsequently changed into one of confusion and growing terror at the fact I wasn't the one he wished to hit. The driver drove off after hitting me and there was no one else around which meant no 911. In the end I had died yet now found myself amongst the living once more.

I felt anger, frustration, and helplessness at the situation, knowing that I would have died no matter what happened or if 911 was called. My body having been hit by the truck at high speeds was a wreck with multiple organs pierced including my lungs. I could tell for I could feel it. My sixth sense had failed me. Yet I had also accepted the fact that I had died. I had come close to dying at a young age and so had long prepared myself mentally. I had nothing tying me to the land of the living in that world.

𝘐 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘯𝘰 𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘰𝘳 𝘧𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘺. 𝘕𝘰𝘵 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘢 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳. 𝘈𝘭𝘭 𝘐 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘯𝘦 𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘐 𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘥 𝘮𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘢𝘴 𝘪𝘧 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘔𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘦.

Yet that was all in the past. Had I actually cared about that life, I would have found myself slightly disturbed at how fast I was to dismiss it as something in the past. Having been given another chance at life by someone who probably hadn't done it out of the kindness of their hearts, I could only move forward and grasp in my hand once more the limitless possibilities of life which I had once abandoned in grief.

𝘕𝘰𝘸, 𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘮 𝘐?

He pondered over this question as he curiously took in his surroundings such as where he was, what he was sitting in, and his new attire. From the looks of it, he was in a compartment of sorts, spherical most likely if only judging from the large, pine green plates which made up this 'compartment'. It was obvious he was sitting in the most uniquely designed chair which obviously had a purpose. There were strange contraptions overhead, extensions of the chair on his sides containing boxes with a series of buttons, and in front of him lay a monitor along with two handles which his hands now sat on.

Though nothing concrete, he did have his suspicions as he swore he had seen something similar to this in the past albeit he wasn't in it. He moved his hand and touched the monitor with his right hand. Nothing occurred so he tried again having partially removed the stuff suit and helmet.

At the top, it read '𝘉𝘪𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤 𝘈𝘶𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘚𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮'. He watched in the bottom left corner as words changed… 𝘙𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨…𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘦…

Memories from happier times before he was broken nor as disillusioned with life rose to the forefront of his mind. He had remembered seeing something similar in a show and began to grin like a man who won the lottery at the realization of his location albeit he probably wasn't in a space colony.

𝘏𝘦𝘩, 𝘞𝘩𝘰 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘏𝘦 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘥

The previously dull pine green plates flashed to life as instead of this original color they became a bright blue with words, numbers and symbols before they were replaced with an image. Likely of his surroundings.

𝘐'𝘮 𝘪𝘯 𝘢 𝘣𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘺 𝘮𝘰𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘪𝘵 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘺…

The change in his surroundings was also followed by a change in the monitor and seat. Its previous display changed, revealing the identity of his mobile suit as well as other data.

𝘐'𝘮 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘟-0 𝘎𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘮…

While I had originally been excited and wary of my future prospect, all of that excitement had quickly died down at the realization of my environment. I was somewhere in the middle of space with no planet in sight so far nor did I appear to have any supplies which would keep me fed. And so the only solution would be to find one. And so trusting my sixth sense which seemed to have improved after death, I chose a direction and so I maneuvered the Unicorn in that direction and took off.

Though it also brought up a new question. How was I able to pilot the Unicorn without any prior training or knowledge? From what I learned in my short time of piloting and interfacing with the system, I had little to no issue doing so. Everything simply came to me naturally as if I had piloted a Mobile Suit before.

The only explanation I could come up with was that whoever brought me back also messed with my head and sixth sense. I had skills and intuitive knowledge I didn't have before, my sixth sense had seen a major improvement along with my mental awareness. This led me to conclude that I had been altered in some way.

Ignoring the glaring issue of having been altered in some way by my benefactor, I also checked my armaments. Aside from the two beam sabers, I had a beam rifle along with four extra magazines and a shield. This might be more than enough for most engagements depending on what I encountered or what world I was in. Though I would have to find a way to obtain more resources. I doubt I could last for a long time going solo let alone maintaining my Gundam.

Whatever I had been thinking was subsequently lost in the process as I was alerted to the presence of a solar system in the distance. It would be roughly a couple hours before I arrived at my current speed but if I stepped on it and pushed my thrusters to the max then I could reach it much faster.

Though as I got closer, my machine would start to intercept several transmissions including a distress signal on an unencrypted channel which got my attention.

I frowned. While this confirmed what universe I was in, I had never heard of the 'Stellar Federation of Anatolia' in Mass effect. I reasoned that perhaps it was one of the human worlds established, independent of the System Alliance Influence like the colonies established in the terminus away from the SA sphere of influence.

I also had to admit I was a bit upset over the fact that the first civilization, humans in this case, was under siege by slavers. There was also the question of whether I should aid them. If I did nothing then they would all likely be enslaved with families torn apart. And I would also have a potential source of supplies and information. Though if I aided them then I would be using up what limited supplies I had. However I could also gain their gratitude and may be able to bargain with them for some sort of arrangement. While there was nothing to be gained in the short term, assuming nothing went south, there would be much to gain in the long term.

I sighed, having made up my mind. Well then. There's no turning back.

Admiral Griffin grimaced at the distress signal sent out by the captain of the SFSV Washington before their subsequent destruction. Despite having started out with roughly similar fleet sizes, they'd been slowly overwhelmed by the Batarian slavers who seemed well equipped. It was likely they were funded by the Batarian Hegemony he considered after hours of combat. It also appeared they had a competent leader if only judging by the coordination, experience, and discipline shown by these Batarians.

He had considered retreating many times yet he knew they would only lose more vessels in an attempt to do so. The Batarians were relentless in their assault, having caused the SFA Fleet to lose more than two-thirds of their ships while they themselves lost only a fourth of their fleet. While he wouldn't openly admit it, they would likely lose this engagement unless a miracle occurred. And once they did then the only thing standing between the slavers would be the standing army who were poorly equipped. Isolation didn't tend to help one's economy.

It was then he noticed a young officer walk up to him with something to say. The young man saluted before he reported an 'oddity' that was detected at the end of the system. "𝘞𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯 𝘰𝘣𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘦𝘭𝘥 𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘩 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘴. Both sides looked on in silence as they attempted to reason what could have destroyed two ships in an instant. The cause of their destruction would reveal itself as they spotted a large, white, humanoid machine hovering over the wreckage of the ships. It was a mech, that much was obvious yet it was much larger than anything seen before and of an obviously different design concept. It had a large horn which the human fleet would make comparisons with that of the mythical unicorn. In its right hand, it held a large weapon which appeared to be a rifle while in its left was a large shield.

The unknown turned to the Batarian fleet before it charged at them and proceeded to wreak havoc among them. It was then and there that Griffin knew they had been saved.
