Chapter 16: Experiment

During these 6 months, we visited various islands, hunted many bounties, and had fun. Our power level did not improve much, since the challenges we faced were nothing special. All of the bounties that we hunted did not even require us to use haki.
During this time, however, we tried collecting information on Hidden Mist Pirates and the Valhalla group.
We also became familiar with the marine bases. The small bases do not keep much money and they just provide a receipt to use in bigger bases. So ultimately we cash our bounties in there.
The marine captain Hamster was familiar with us and knew our names. Even though we visited many bases, we never felt welcomed there. We also got the name of "Faceless Hunters" and our reputation was very inconsistent, that is, on one side we had a very good reputation and on the other side we had a very bad reputation. We did nothing to deserve the bad reputation, but there are rumors goings around.
We even asked people about the rumors and they said that we are the type to not consider public safety, we hunt only for money, etc. There was even a rumor that we let a pirate crew kill people in front of us and we did not interfere because the said pirates in the crew had no bounty.
But on the islands where we visited and solved pirates right in front of people, we had a very good reputation. Our bad reputation does not affect them, moreover, the good deeds spread from those islands to other islands.
I must say, probably some government employees are getting scolded by their bosses for failing to tarnish our reputation completely.
Today, we went to the black market and got a devil fruit encyclopedia. It had various fruits, their images, a description, etc.
Everyone was getting amazed by the number of fruits and their powers. Everyone naturally wanted some kind of fruit for themselves.
As for the reason I got the encyclopedia, I wanted to test a few theories about devil fruits. Especially theories which relate to extracting devil fruits from dead users. I know for sure that some methods exist.
Burges had a way of collecting devil fruits even without the help of Blackbeard, as seen in Dressrosa. It might be a direct way of extracting the power from the dead like Big Mom got her powers from mother Caramel. But I had to figure it out.
The first method that I wanted to try was to see if a fruit reincarnates into the closest matching fruit. For example, if Kaku is killed while having bananas near him, will one of the bananas get converted into the giraffe devil fruit. And to verify that, I had to get the encyclopedia.
Now, we are on a small island village like the Fusha village. We are already in our disguises and waiting in a bar. We anchored our ship on the opposite side of the village where it is safe and had Sachi and Bepo there.
The reason we did this was that we have studied the patterns of a certain pirate group and we were ready to catch them. Now, according to our estimate that group should be visiting here.
We had some food and beverages in the bar. Our masks had a way of opening only the mouth part for eating without taking it off. After all, we are not a certain white hair masked ninja who can eat in a split second.
Our estimations of predicting pirate routes are not always correct, but it still has around a 30% success rate. We learned it from Hercules and Arjun.
This time, we were right. The pirate crew was coming to this island as sighted by the villagers.
I spoke to the village head
"Please don't panic and ask everyone to hide in their homes. We will take care of all of them"
Village head: "Ok, if it is you people we can rest assured"
They were afraid of us at first, but our behavior put them at ease. They were glad that, they will not die in crossfire or we will only capture the ones with bounty and not others.
The pirate group probably saw us, but they did not bother to escape. After all, logias are always overconfident.
Yes, the pirate crew was Caribou pirates. He was a logia swamp fruit user. He had not yet ventured into the grand line.
Even paradise can be deadly to logias since crazy weather can drown one in the sea.
They approached us. They had 2 devil fruit users. One was Caribou himself and the other was called Iguana. As you can guess, he has the green iguana devil fruit.
Iguana was not present in canon, so I could assume that he probably died, got captured, or left the crew.
Once they arrived, Caribou said with a sly smile
"Give us all your money and we will let you live"
I, Thor, and Penguin started laughing our asses off. It was Caribou's usual way of talking like a schemer and it certainly did not feel like a threat. In fact, it was damn funny.
Jai: "Did I hear that right?"
Thor: "I can't believe he threatens people with that"
Penguin: "Oi, can you repeat that again."
Law: "Enough of that. Let's get this over with"
Drake: "Agreed, I don't want to see this eyesore anymore"
Hodur: "I have never sensed someone this creepy before"
Controlling my emotions, I said
"Well, you guys know the drill. Just capture the devil fruit users alive"
It did not take us long and the entire crew was finished. Caribou and Iguana were beaten up badly and were unconscious.
We left the town in our rowboats and before leaving I gave the signal to Bepo and Sachi with my king's haki.
We will meet in the ocean after the island is out of vision.
Soon, Bepo and Sachi caught up to us and we joined back
Bepo: "Is this the logia user?"
Law: "Yes. He was just a weakling without his logia's intangibility"
The Iguana fruit has orange fruit as a base, and Caribou's fruit has mango as a base.
We purchased oranges on the last island and we will purchase mangoes on the next one.
The last island had no mangoes. The next island will have one I am sure. It is a larger island and has more shops.
I had to do the experiment. I kept the bag of oranges near Iguana and distributed the other oranges on the ship at various parts.
It was time for the experiment.
We put the unconscious body in a small tub, so as to not dirty the deck with blood.
I pulled out my katana and got ready. My heart was beating fast now, just like everyone else.
I looked at my crew and they gave me a nod.
I did not hesitate and straight-up stabbed Iguana's heart. He woke up and opened his mouth to scream, but, instead of sound, blood poured out of his mouth. He looked extremely scared in his last moments.
In his final moment, he put up a final struggle and tried to transform, but his life ran out and he finally dropped dead.
We started looking through every fruit that we kept in different parts of the ship.
Soon, Penguin found out the devil fruit that was reincarnated.
Everyone was shocked to see this. If this thing gets leaked out, we will probably be targeted by everyone.
Drake: "But how come no one figured this out throughout the entire time?"
Law: "The world government has been around for 800 years. They should have conducted such experiments and this should be one of the most basic ones"
Jai: "It might not be so simple. We will need more data to confirm it. Don't forget that this fruit did not reincarnate into the closest of fruits on the deck but a relatively far one, in the corner of the ship"
Hodur: "Let's do this experiment with other pirates and confirm it"
Penguin: "If this formula can be cracked, we can get many powerful devil fruits in the seas."
Sachi: "There are many users who are not that strong, but they have strong fruits"
We cleaned up the dead body and tub and kept the body lying on the deck.
Caribou soon woke up and he was shocked to see his dead crewmate.
Thor: "What are you looking at creepy face?"
Caribou was scared shit, but he still spoke in a sly tone.
"You can hand me over to the marines for my bounty. I will be obedient"
Hodur: "Can't you speak in any other way? This is creepy"
Law: "If you speak in such a way again, I will cut off your legs"
He was smart and did not say anything.
After 12 hours we reached the destination and we got mangoes. During this time, Thor simply knocked out Caribou with his hammer.
Once we were back on the seas, we placed the mangoes throughout the ship like before. Caribou woke up again.
He was shocked to see this. He knew what his devil fruit looked like and he realized the situation.
He, being some sort of religious person started praying to God.
Once we were ready with the preparations, I mimicked him and said
"Lord have mercy!"
"Forgive the foolish pirate who killed so many people"
Caribou's fear was at its peak this time. It was the exact same lines he said while killing countless people.
"How does it feel to be killed in your own way?"
Caribou: "I am sorry, please let me go, something like this will not work. People must have experimented with this previously. I will give you all my money"
Sachi: "We have already looted your ship."
Caribou: "We have hidden more in an isolated island"
We knew he was lying with our haki. Deceiving haki needs very good acting skills like Kanjuro or Pudding. Caribou, unfortunately, did not have such skills.
Jai: "May Lord grant you peace after death"
'Please all-father, don't' I prayed the next moment.
And I stabbed his heart.
We started looking for the fruit again, but this time the fruit reincarnated in the deck.
Thor: "What do we do with the devil fruits?"
Jai: "I would suggest we hold onto them for now. There are more powerful fruits. If someone weak joins us later we can give the swamp one to them. Its special ability is storage, while anyone of you will find a proper way to use it, it will be better for you people to wait for a stronger fruit, now that we know how to extract fruits"
"As for the zoan, I don't think any of you guys will fit it. If we can get better fruits, it will be a waste for you guys to consume them"
Everyone agreed with it. They might have some desire if we got it at random, but since we can hunt it like that, they will look for better fruits. That was the basics of human greed.
We visited Captain Hamster for cashing the bounties since his base was the closest.
Hamster: "How did you people manage to kill a logia?"
Jai: "We somehow pushed him into the sea"
Hamster raised his eyebrows. Something like this is common sense, but no devil fruit user will fall vulnerable to such tricks.
Hamster: "Is that true? He was not that stupid"
Jai: "I distracted him, and my team pushed him into the sea with the help of a plastic sheet from behind. He was nothing without his devil fruit"
He seemed to have believed that and gave us the money.
<Timeskip 3 months, Jai is still 15 years old>
During the last 3 months, we hunted 2 more fruit users, but we were not able to get any fruit from them, by our previous method.
So we concluded that there was a probability since we used the exact base fruits.
We were hunting Zabuza and the hidden mist pirates this time. We again estimated the location. It was Spider Miles. This town was Doflamingo's base and Law joined him here.
They will most likely attack this town since there is a rival company of Valhalla trading group that was booming and their route also indicated that.
From this and their current activities, we estimated the location.
Law was not in the right mood, since that island had some of his best and worst memories. We offered Law to stay back on Swallow Island, but he insisted to go on this journey.
"Running away from my past is not an option. I will visit it even if it feels sad" was what he had said.
When we were around an hour away from the destination, I could sense everyone tensing up.
This was mainly because of Thor, Hodur, and Law. They were showing various negative emotions.
Hodur was very young when the incident happened, so he does not remember much. But Thor mentioned this incident many times, causing Hodur to feel something for his dead parents and their sacrifice.
Moreover, he did not have parents and when he sensed other children with parents he used to feel sad.
Which leads him to have hatred for the pirate group on a level just below Thor.
Soon the time came and we reached Spider Miles.
However, we saw something that shocked us.
