Chapter 3: quest

Alex Adams

Level: 1

strength: 7

agility: 8

stamina: 6

nano control: 99

free stat points: 2

'I'll save the free stat points for later,' Alex thought while opening the door and going out of the bathroom.

"did you kill it?" asked Emily with concern.

"yes, it's finished. You can go in if you want; there is no trace of it left."

"ok, then I will take a bath." Said Emily after checking the bathroom for any trace of the cockroach.

Alex was concerned about her. he didn't know how to tell her that she had to kill animals and beasts from now on. All be it fake, they seemed too realistic for her.

'I will think of it later; for now, she can level up through quests.' He thought

Finding NPCs with missions was very easy in the initial stages of the game, and you just needed to look a little bit.

It didn't matter if you were in the middle of a big city or the desert; there was always an NPC waiting with a mission for you.

After resting a little bit, Alex went to his desk and brought out his tablet to check the latest news.

As he expected, the news of the explosion and people fainting in the vicinity was the hot topic.

Many news articles talked about people hallucinating the same thing.

Some blamed the government, while others blamed OZ CORP.

But what interested Alex the most was an article about the similarity of the hallucination to the MMORPG games.

"they are quick to catch up," said Alex while smiling, "but they are not as fast as me."

Then he put away the tablet and went to Emily's bedroom to talk to her about his plans, but she was sleeping, so instead, he went downstairs and made lunch.

When Emily woke up and came down, it was already four pm.

But Alex waited for her to have lunch together. While they were having lunch, Alex tried to explain some basic stuff to her.

"Emy, from now on, the world will change," said Alex, not sure if his sister even understood his words "after lunch, we are going on another adventure, but you have to do exactly as I say. Ok?

First, you can't move stuff with your mind for now.

Second, you can't go outside without me.

Third, you can't tell anybody that we are here or talk to anybody but me for now. Forth …."

"ok, ok, I'll promise I will be good and do as you say. Now can we go?" Emily cut him short and got up from the chair.

Alex sighed and smiled at her sister before saying, "ok, for the first part of the adventure, we are going to look for a person with this mark on his or her head," said Alex and drew an exclamation with the sauce on the table.

"But you said I'm not allowed to talk to anyone."

"When I'm with you, it's ok. Then that person will tell us what we need to do next."

"ok, let me go grab my bag, and we can go," said Emily and ran up to her room.

But it didn't take long when she called Alex "aaaleeex."

Alex ran to her room, and when he saw she was ok, he asked with an irritated tone, "what is it now? Is there another cockroach?"

"I don't know about that, but isn't that old man outside the house, like the person you said?"

Alex ran to the window, and when he saw a man with an exclamation point on his head, he hugged Emily "your luck is truly amazing, sister. First the cockroach, then this."

"what about that ugly cockroach was good luck??" asked Emily with irritation at the thought of the creature again.

Alex ignored her remarks, grabbed her hand, and went down the stairs.

When they got near the man, Alex greeted him with respect. "hello sir, can I help you?"

The old man looked at the two siblings and smiled softly, "I need five fish from the lake,"

Alex was a little surprised by the straightforward attitude but then remembered that the nanobot AI only developed over time, and the more they duplicated, the more it became advanced.

So it was totally natural that the system was still premature.

The nanobots actually functioned as neurons to form a central brain, and naturally, the more neurons it had, the smarter it got.

But suddenly, an idea formed in Alex's mind 'if they are still dumb, doesn't that mean that I can take advantage of them?'

A creepy smile formed on Alex's face, and after agreeing to the quest, he went to the house and got their fishing equipment.

"ok, Emy. I will send you a party request, so accept it when you get the message." Said Alex and sent Emily the request.

Emily accepted it, and they both went to the boat near the lake and hopped on.

After about five minutes of paddling, they got far enough from the shore, and Alex readied the equipment.

Then he gave a fishing rod to Emily. "you know how to use it, right?"

"yes, I'm not a child Alex. I know how to use them," Emily grabbed the rod and started fishing.

Her every move was like a professional. She loved fishing, and their dad would bring her here to fish whenever he had the time.

Alex, on the other hand, was a total noobe. When Emily saw him struggling with his rod, she rolled her eyes and grabbed it out of his hands.

"give me that. You can have mine," said Emily and switched rods with Alex.

Alex was a little ashamed but didn't say anything and just did as he was told.

Thirty minutes later, Emily had fished about eight fish while Alex only got a small fish.

"wow, how is it that there are so many fish around here. Before, when dad and I came here, we had to stay here for two hours to get four or five fish,"' said Emily while unhooking another fish.

"it's because of the system. They are not real fish. If it wasn't for the quest, they would have disappeared just like the cockroach," explained Alex

He had already talked to Emily about real and hologram creatures, so she knew what he was talking about.

"but they seem so real," Emily said in astonishment.

"that's because we see them straight with our brains and not with our eyes."

After four hours of fishing, Emily got 47, and Alex got five fish on their part of the boat.

They returned to the shore and went to the old man to hand over the fish and finish the quest.

"young man, I see you have my fish."

"I have your fish, sir. We even fished more than you asked." Said Alex

"oh, nice. Then I will take all of them from you."

As the man said that, a series of messages flashed in front of Alex and Emily's eyes.

"you have completed your first quest."

"you are the first people to complete a quest."

"extra reward calculating."

"completion rate rank: SS."

"because of the insufficient nanobots in the environment, the rewards can't be granted."

"you have leveled up to level two."

"all stats plus one"

"two free stats are added to your account."

"you have leveled up to level three."

"all stats plus one"

"two free stats are added to your account."

"you have leveled up to level four."

"all stats plus one"

"two free stats are added to your account."

"you have leveled up to level five."

"all stats plus one"

"two free stats are added to your account."

And it stopped at that. Even Emily ranked up to level 5 and could feel the physical changes in her body.

She felt more refreshed and alive "wow, I feel great."

As Emily was trying to figure out what happened, Alex looked at one message in particular.

"Completion rate: SS."

There were eight compilation rate ranks: F, E, D, C, B, A, S, SS, and SSS.

In his previous life, Alex's best record was an S completion rate that got him a lot of rewords.

But now, here he was with an SS completion rate. It was ridiculous.

'It must be a system bug. I have to use I while it lasts.' Thought Alex with excitement.
