Chapter 34: Nothing but Corban the gentleman.

My eyes were fixed on him while he ensured to fix his on the road. Whether he noticed my peered gaze or not, he did not let on.

From the passenger's seat, I was able to take in the features of Corban. Blue eyes, short black hair that looked a tidbit messy, as though he had run his hand through it multiple times today. Corban looked nothing less than a gentleman. A harmless one at that.

Even his choice of clothing mirrored it. He was wearing a plain white T-shirt and paired it with black jeans. For starters, he didn't dress like he was going to work. But who am I to question his choice of clothing? Especially since he was sort of my boss.

I continued taking in Corban and his appearance until he parted his mouth to say, "So are you going to continue taking a taxi back and forth every day?"

At first, I was taken aback by his question which caught me off guard. Frankly, I was more comfortable with staring him down.

Regardless, I answered by saying, "Yup, that's the plan."

I don't think Jacob is going to back down on his decision. Not that I wanted him to anyway. He is much needed back at the office. I will have to find a way around it. Until then, I don't mind living in taxis.

"Hmmm", he furrowed his brows, although his eyes were still focusing on the road.

I didn't know what to say so I simply continued staring at him with a blank expression.

"Do you feel comfortable with taxis?" He asked yet again out of the blue. Wasn't he enjoying the comfortable silence??!!!

Anywhoo, I managed to answer him without letting out a sigh first, "As a matter of fact, I have a terrible history with taxis and drivers. But it doesn't make me feel uncomfortable."I was speaking with as much history as it was possible to fit into a sentence.

If he took his eyes off the road for a second to look at me, he would have noticed the disinterest that was gleaming in my eyes. But thankfully, he didn't want us to die yet and continued to drive with caution.

"What do you mean by terrible history?"

Now, that is not a question that Aurum, Corianne, or even Jacob would have asked me. Mostly because they were already familiar with my tales of bad luck. But for Corban, he was all but a stranger after all.

I debated telling him or even indulging him enough to continue with the conversation. It didn't matter because I found myself starting off with, "I don't know but I usually have terrible luck with taxi drivers."

He didn't say anything which I assumed was his way of nudging me to go on. So I did....

"I think I usually rile them up and tend to piss them off. Some even say that I talk too much or I'm overly friendly or generally too giddy."This time I didn't stop the sigh, "I beg to differ. I am nothing but an angel. "

He chuckles lightly but says, "No kidding."

I suspect that he said so only to humor me, but who am I to call him out on it. If he accepts that I am an angel then there's absolutely no problem.

"But….."He hesitated a bit but continued anyways, "I can always drive you home though…."

My mouth hung open from his sudden suggestion. To tell you how shocked I was, my eyes blinked rapidly in succession.

Corban must have taken my silence differently because he immediately added,…"Don't mind me, I was just making a suggestion here."

Ummmm…sir…I am most definitely going to mind you now.

Was it the same guy whose phone screen I broke???!!! The same one who witnessed my barging into Jotham's office???

Of course, I had to be reasonable by asking, "Isn't that going to be a problem?"

"Of course not. From your directions, I might end up not too far from my own home."

He was still not looking at me but was rather still focused on the road and cars ahead.

I concluded that he must either be a very careful driver, or too shy to maintain eye contact with me. I decided to go with the former, Corban doesn't seem like a shy person.

"If you are certain that it will not affect your routine then I won't mind either."Studying his side profile, his lips curved into a smirk which made me satisfied enough to say, "Thanks."

You might be wondering why I was quick to accept Corban's offer despite claiming to be mortified. Well, Corban doesn't seem to mind my mortification, and umm…should I remind you that Jacob is no longer my chauffeur??!!! Plus, I am extremely tired of taxis and this is most definitely my big break.

He hummed in response and I took that as a 'you're welcome.'

The rest of the drive to my home consisted of listening to an interview on the radio, some Taylor Swift's songs on shuffle and intensely studying Corban's side profile. He didn't turn to glance at me. Not even once.

I'm starting to think it isn't because he's a careful driver.

Anywho, the ride home took about 20 minutes longer than it ought to take. Let's blame it on the 5 pm traffic that always seems to drain out the strength of all office workers. But, traffic or not, I found myself on my front porch soon enough.

"Do you mind coming in?", I asked nicely because I don't know if he'll think I'm rude by making him wait in the car. Not saying I care what he thinks though…..but I sort of do.

He responded rather curtly, finally looking at me, "No, I do not mind."

The glance was as brief as ever before he proceeded to open the door to the driver's seat.

'It looks like I'll be stuck with someone who can't look at me for more than 5 seconds.', I mumbled to no one in particular before also making my way out of the car.

Corban was right behind me as I made my way to the door, turning the knob before letting myself in.

Maybe it was wishful thinking, or maybe a mistake on my part. But, I was expecting to invite Corban to my living room to take a seat while I went to look for the documents.

Instead, as soon as I walked in, Corban rooted by my side, Jacob popped in front of my holding a plate of stacked pancakes.

With his eerie wide grin, his eyebrows wiggled as he announced, "Guess what? Today is Weird Waffles Wednesday!!"
