Chapter 1: PROLOGUE : THE POSSESSION

Night of the death moon

The desolate lands

The Demon King's Castle

Luthan sat on his odd throne. It was a ridiculously huge frame but considering it was a perfect fit for him there was no question as to why it was so huge. The throne room was mostly empty except for two creepy-looking statues. The statues were his pets who could not leave the underworld. The upper lands were not conducive for them, yet.

However, he had no plans to turn the human dwelling place into demon land. As much as it would improve their living conditions, he had no beef with them and they have not tried to bother him in any way. Also, there was the fact he was intruding in their territory, courtesy demanded that he behave.

"My Lord!" Yelled a little winged creature running through the door. Its little feet made a slight pitter-patter as they hit the floor before it lifted off the ground, its tiny wings fluttering as they worked hard to fly.

Luthan sat upright immediately. It was rare to see Dalan agitated. The monster was the calmest of all the furies. With their three horns, red eyes, and black skin they serve as his little minions, obedient in their every dealing and always ready to carry out his command.

"What is it, Dalan?" Luthan yawned but he was worried as to what was going on. It was unlike Dalan and it was pretty easy to guess that whatever the issue was, it was pretty bad.

"THEY HAVE BREACHED THE WALLS!" Dalan yelled, stopping abruptly just before it could hit the demon king square in the face.

Dalan was about the size of a regular-sized cat, with wings, of course. It would not cause much damage to the Demon's king's face but he was likely to get smacked against the wall.

Luthan's eyes widened in horror. "Who dares?!"

"The humans!" The creature cried.

"What? How did they find this place?" He had chosen this place to keep away from the humans. He didn't want to be in their business any more than he wanted them in his.

They were annoying especially to things they could not comprehend. One sight of him and cries of "demon and devil" would likely follow though they would not be wrong. He was a demon alright and he had no intention to pretend otherwise.

Dalan held his tiny hands close to his chest. "I can only think of one explanation, My Lord." Its entire body shook as he spoke.

Luthan squinted his eyes, "Which is?"

However before the little creature could reply,  Luthan heard a loud bang and his castle shook. Forget breaching the walls, the humans were about to enter his fortress.

"Where is she?" Luthan asked, rising from his chair. He could lose his house but she was far more important.

"Her chambers," Dalan muttered, "But I am sure the loud sound must have woken her up."

Luthan jumped down from his high chair. His huge feet hit the ground and his head spun. He knew instantly that something was wrong and it wasn't just because of the death moon.

This was obviously no coincidence, they had chosen to attack on a night his powers were drastically low. There was also the fact that the furies did not notice their attackers until they got this close. He knew it was not because they were not paying attention, some kind of magic the furies could not sense was definitely in play here.

"The other furies?" Luthan asked as he walked out of the throne room and towards her chambers.

"Trying to increase our defenses but I doubt we have much of a chance," the edginess in the Fury's voice was pretty obvious. "Our only option is the secret path, we would try to hold them off as much as we can but My Lord and Her Grace need to leave the castle now."

Luthan was no longer walking, rather he was sprinting to her chambers. He wanted to protect his home but that would be put on hold for now. His powers were locked out, staying to fight was a fool's errand. He was bound to lose.

"Where is Staan?" He asked and Dalan went silent. Luthan stopped abruptly to look at the fury.

"I-I am afraid my Lord, he is the reason we are in this mess. There is no other explanation as to how the humans could have found out about this place, let alone to know that tonight would be the perfect time to launch an attack if they had not been told."

Luthan did not say anything nor did he show any type of reaction instead he resumed his run down the path that led to her room. Living on the upper lands came with consequences and he had known that however, he did not think the humans would be stupid enough to try to attack even if it was a night the source of his powers were cut off.

Usually, he would have returned to the underworld as the moon did not affect his powers from there but he had lived on the upper lands for half a decade without any incident, he had not expected it to change.

He had made a mistake thinking the humans would continue to let him be simply because they were doing so.

Her room was after the next turn. He took it and almost came head to chest with her. "Arrrghhh! Luthan!" She cried as she landed on her bum.

"I am so sorry," he muttered, bending over more than half his height as he stretched out his hand to help her up. His left horn brushed against the wall as he bent to lift her. It did not hurt but it sent a weird sensation through his body.

"Thank you," she returned as she grabbed his hand. "What is going on?" She asked the instant she was standing again. "I woke up to the castle shaking."

"We are under attack," Luthan said to her. He bent his head to talk to her. His eight-foot frame, looking down at her mere five feet five inches sized body.

Her eyes widened in horror. "How is that even possible?"

"I do not know but right now we need to use the secret path, we don't stand a chance, not with the multitude I can tell is outside…."

Luthan felt it before he heard it, the shift of the wind against his arm. He reacted immediately and even that was not fast enough. He turned to see the arrow phishing through the air and into the side of her head.

His eyes widened in horror as blood began to drip down the side of her face. She staggered a little and he caught her with his hand before she fell to the ground.

He immediately looked to where the arrow had come from just in time to see another arrow coming straight at him, he moved his head and the arrow hit the wall with a soft sound, piercing the wall.

"My lady! My Lord!" Dalan cried, rushing forward.

A loud crackle could be heard and a voice said, "I will leave the rest to them."

Luthan's first instinct was to go after him but he had other pressing matters. She would be dead in seconds if he did not do something about it.

"Dalan," he softly called.

"I am sorry, my Lord. Healing magic is not my forte, especially something of this magnitude."

She tried to speak but the blood just poured out of her mouth. "Shh!" He said with a weak smile.

There was only one thing he could do. She was half-demon which meant half her soul was his to control but only if she let him- he was not worried about that.

He did not have enough power to do this properly and he was afraid she would return as a lesser demon but at this point, he didn't think he had many options. "Take a step back, Dalan." He said and carefully placed his dying wife onto the ground.

"My Lord, they are upon us." Dalan sadly announced.

He ignored the fury and carefully placed her on the ground. He then bit into his index finger until it bled, the dark purple-colored blood popped out and he touched the side of her bleeding head with the arrow still in it. Taking the mix of blood, he drew a circle around her and began to chant in demon language.

Dalan was getting anxious as he took his time to cast the spell. The yelling had gotten closer and the Fury could tell there was only a door stopping them from getting a full on human attack.

The blood began to glow and she lifted off the ground as the spell activated. Dark light began to pour out of her eyes and mouth. Luthan's chant was still in the same breath.

Suddenly, the building shook and the ceiling directly above them started to fall. "My Lord!" Dalan yelled as the slab of ceiling landed with a loud thud on the Demon King.

However, Luthan was able to stop the ceiling from collapsing on him and ruining the spell with his bare strength as he held the ceiling up.

Her body fell to the ground lifeless as the spell came to an end. Luthan tossed the huge slab away and dropped to his knees. He lifted her head and pressed her lifeless body against him.

"My Lord!" Dalan called, he sounded agitated as he stared back and forth. "The humans!" As if on cue they busted through the doors and down the hallway.

***********************************

He was dying, he knew. This wasn't good. His powers were returning but they were not even one hundredth yet. His body was likely to give up on him before he could heal himself.

Curse the Death moon! The one time he was vulnerable, never in a million years did he think Staan would take advantage of it but how wrong he had been. He couldn't die, no matter what, he had to survive.

He was in a field, how he had gotten there he could barely remember. All that he knew was that he had crawled from under the rumbles and slowly made his way downhill. He left nothing but a trail of blood. Staan would find him soon and knowing the demon, he would.

The sun was out and the heat was all he could feel. That was when he heard it. The sound of a little child running in the field. Luthan didn't think, he knew what he had to do.

He made a little bird and sent it towards the kid, the bird did its job and led the child to him. It was a little boy, he didn't look a day over five. Luthan found it odd that the child was staring at him, an eight-foot horned bleeding demon and the child didn't so much as scream.

"Are you okay?" His soft voice asked.

Luthan almost chuckled. "No, I am not."

"Do you want me to call someone?"

"No, I need you to hold my hand," Luthan said and stressed out his long fingers and equally long nails to him.

"Okay," the boy responded and grabbed a finger.

"What's your name?" Luthan asked.

"Fate." He responded.

Luthan laughed. Was this fate? He wouldn't know but he intended to make the most of it. "You have a nice name and I need your help. Would you help me?"

"Yes, I will."

"Thank you and I am sorry," Luthan immediately began to mutter a spell, and the boy was lifted off the ground. He was forfeiting his body but that wasn't the worst part. Since his powers weren't completely back yet, he could not transfer everything to the boy and doubted he could do a complete soul transfusion.

His soul would have to be dormant for a while but as percussion, he would cast another spell, it was likely to make his soul dormant for an even longer time but he had patience. As long as the boy was safe, he would eventually awaken.

Luthan's hand slipped from his child's grip and the boy fell. He woke up a couple of minutes later and started walking away from the way he came, his memory of the incident completely wiped.
