Chapter 24: Family, Wolf, and A Friend

Ferrah, Rohann, and Zorenn traveled back home after dealing with the huge wild boar. Ferrah carried her two sons in her arms as she jumped from tree to tree.

She eventually stopped somewhere in the middle of the forest. She put Rohann and Zorenn on the ground who were looking at her in curiosity.

"I guess this will be a good time to introduce you, huh?" Ferrah spoke to herself as she stretched her arms over her head.

She then stood there as she glowed white, bathing in mana. Soon after, her shadow that was on the ground darkened.

Rohann and Zorenn noticed this and watched closely. A black figure soon leapt up from the shadow of Ferrah.

The figure leapt up at a speed incomprehensible to the untrained eye. Ferrah, Rohann, and Zorenn followed the black figure with their eyes as it landed on the ground behind the twins.

The black figure that jumped out of Ferrah's shadow turned out to be a large black wolf. The wolf observed the twins curiously as its red eyes that were eerily similar to Ferrah glinted with a mysterious light. Its beautiful black fur shimmered in the afternoon sunlight.

The wolf emitted a low growl in an attempt to scare the calm children in front of her, but Rohann and Zorenn showed no fear.

Ferrah chuckled at the display. Two small children facing a large wolf capable of killing them with no apparent fear…

"Stop growling like a mindless beast and say hello to my children, Nala," Ferrah playfully chided Nerrunala. "Aren't they just adorable?"

"Hmm. They feel strong. They're your children indeed," Nerrunala harrumphed in approval. "But I like my cubs better."

"Ho~? You're a mother?" Ferrah asked Nerrunala in surprise.

"I am."

"How old are they?"

"Two months old."

"Hmmm… Let me see them sometime."

"Haha no."

"Why not?"

"Would you present your children to a monster?"

"I would. I'm doing it right now."

"YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN!"

"HAHAHA! Yes, yes. But you're right, I wouldn't… Wait, I'm a monster?! You hurt me~!"

"Good. You have no idea how much I want to hurt you."

"You swing that way? Your poor husband… Wait, maybe he likes it? Yeah, definitely."

"SHUT UP!"

Rohann and Zorenn watched the exchange happen in front of them. Their heads turned in sync to look at whoever was talking.

"Mom! Who's this wolf?" Rohann asked Ferrah after feeling that the exchange between the two mothers of different races won't end anytime soon.

"Oh! Haha! I almost forgot. Rohann, Zorenn, meet Nerrunala. She's my beast companion." Ferrah introduced Rohann and Zorenn to Nerrunala.

"And Nala, these are my children. The white haired one is Rohann, and the two colored eye one is Zorenn," Ferrah said as she introduced Nerrunala to her children. "Also, you're right. They are strong."

Nerrunala held no doubt about what Ferrah said. Rohann and Zorenn felt different. Something about them makes her feel… unworthy.

"Hmm. I believe you. Beasts have good instincts." Nerrunala said. "So, why did you call me?"

"Here. A gift for you and your pack. Or it could just be yours solely if you want to." Ferrah answered as she threw out her hand.

Her ring glowed and the corpse of a huge boar appeared at the side. Nerrunala looked at the boar that was almost her size in surprise.

"So big?!"

[Heh. That's what she said.]

Rohann elbowed his twin brother in the stomach after hearing what Zorenn said telepathically.

[How would they say that? You didn't have one!]

[M a g i c ~ !]

After their quick telepathic exchange, Rohann and Zorenn returned their attention in front of them.

"I know, right? Guess who killed this beast, hehehe!" Ferrah cheered as she rested her hands on her hips in a proud pose.

"What do you…? Them?" Nerrunala asked in disbelief as she pointed at Rohann and Zorenn with her snout.

Ferrah didn't say anything and only nodded excitedly. Nerrunala couldn't help but look at the twins in a different light.

[Mom is so proud of us… Is this what we missed in our past life? Man, I'm glad we recovered our memories.]

[Yeah. I appreciate these moments even more now.]

"I see. Well, what did I expect? Monsters give birth to monsters."

"Hey!"

Nerrunala pulled the corpse of the huge boar with her fangs as she went closer to Ferrah.

"You sure I can have all this? This is high quality meat enriched by natural mana. It'll be nutritious for humans, too." Nerrunala asked Ferrah.

"Go ahead. I already took more than enough for the three of us." Ferrah answered.

"Well then, thank you for your generosity." Nerrunala bowed to the family of three before disappearing back to Ferrah's shadow along with the corpse of the huge boar.

As if everything was just a dream, Ferrah picked up both Rohann and Zorenn without a word and continued traveling back home.

"You seemed like long time friends with that wolf, mom." Rohann said to Ferrah to make conversation.

"Really? Hehe, I'm happy it seems that way. We haven't known each other that long yet." Ferrah answered.

"Can we have beast companions too?" Zorenn asked his question next.

"Of course! Someday, you'll have a beast companion of your own. Don't try to rush, ok? When you meet the right beast companion for you, you'll know." Ferrah advised Rohann and Zorenn.

The three then continued to make conversation as they traveled. They eventually reached home as the sun started to set.

"Mom? Who's that?"

A man dressed in long white robes stood in front of their house. He seemed to be thinking of something when he noticed the arrival of the three.

Ferrah stopped in her tracks when she saw who the man in front of their house was. Rohann and Zorenn looked up at their mother and saw the light of familiarity in her eyes.

"Neidan?! What are you doing here?" Ferrah asked the man in white robes who was apparently named Neidan.

Neidan flashed a smile when his gaze landed on the two children in Ferrah's arms.

"What? Is their godfather now allowed to wish them a happy birthday?" Neidan asked Ferrah while he pretended his feelings were hurt.

"Heh~? He's allowed to, but he hasn't even visited them for years now." Ferrah retorted back.

"Hehe, sorry. I really am. It's just… I've been busy. You know how it is." Neidan said with a regretful look on his face.

"Yeah. I can only imagine," Ferrah said. "Let's get inside first. Some introductions are in order."

Ferrah put down Rohann and Zorenn on the ground to open the front door of their house. The twins immediately rushed into the living room and sat down on a chair to wait for the others.

"Boys, this is your godfather Neidan. He's me and your father's best friend!" Ferrah introduced Neidan to the kids.

"Happy birthday, twins!"

"Ummm… Thank you… sir?"

"Haha! It's alright, don't be a stranger with me. I think this is their first time meeting me?" Neidan asked Ferrah after he tried to dissipate the awkwardness the twins felt for him.

"It is. They were just babies the last time you came by."

"Time flew by, huh? Look at them! They kind of look like their father now…" Neidan said with a wistful look on his face.

"Why don't you sit down to talk with them? I'll brew us something to drink. Anything you want?" Ferrah asked Neidan.

"I'd like tea. Thanks, Ferrah."

"Eww. Leaf juice." The twins said simultaneously after hearing what Neidan wanted to drink.

Ferrah and Neidan were stunned for a moment at Rohann and Zorenn's reactions before laughing out loud.

"You really are Renfri's children! He said the exact same thing to me long ago!" The wistful aura of Neidan completely disappeared. He looked genuinely happy after the twins said something that reminded him of simpler and happier times.

Rohann and Zorenn smiled. It seems that this godfather of theirs isn't that bad.

"Can you tell us more about our father, uncle?" Zorenn asked Neidan so that he can sit down and talk with them.

"Oho~! Renfri's children are asking me to tell them stories?" Neidan said with a mischievous tone in his voice as he sat down with the twins. "I wonder… should I-"

"Don't even think about it." The voice of Ferrah rang out from the kitchen, chilling Neidan to his core.

"Alright, alright! Only good things! Sheesh! I liked you better when you were an a-" Neidan was cut off when he felt something rush past near his head.

A knife lodged itself in the wall in front of him. It would have lodged itself at the back of his head if whoever threw it just aimed a little more to the left…

"Aha ha ha! Alright then! So, you two," Neidan said as he straightened himself on the chair he sat on.

"What do you want to know about your oh so great father?"
