Chapter 24: "Who is Augustus?"

Azrael's tongue touched her upper molar trying her best to keep her sanity straight but it failed to hide the sparks of hellfire in her trembling hands.

"I will pay you double to send her back to eternal sleep." Azrael grinned, gritting her teeth in between her words.

Nat rubbed his chin, thinking of her offer. After a jiff,"Nope, thanks for the offer but greed is a sin. I will only take the pay." Nat stated.

Azrael scowled hearing his words, no one would be fooled by his innocent facade. He is the same guy who will sell anything for some money.

"Then I guess, no pay for you." Azrael calmly shrugged and went back to work.

Nat was about to retaliate, when Azrael's eyes glided over the entrance and Nat's eyes followed.

A lady in white gown slowly walked in, with bluish pale skin, with straight hairs covering her face and all.

Nat swallowed hard, seeing the lady slowly walk past him, leaving wet traces on the ground. She stood in front of Azrael, silent.

Azrael sighed, and pinched the bridge of her nose,"Dwyne."

Azrael stool a glance of the young woman standing in front of her, silently. Dwyne or the infamously known as the white lady in mortal realm appears when one spouse is about to die or in danger.

But no one had a spouse here, why would she visit Niflheim. Azrael looked at Natlus with suspicion.

"Did you get married?" Azrael questioned raising a brow.

"...WHAT!" Nat almost screamed hearing her question.

In his whole life he never even looked at a woman, and she was talking about marriage? And Azrael knew about it, then what with the stupid question.

Azrael had to cover her ears from his yelling,"No need to shout. Just making sure."

"Making sure of what?" Nat inquired back.

"That you didn't get married. Dwyne only comes when one's spouse is in danger." Azrael explained.

"So? It's definitely not me. Maybe she is here for you." Nat pointed at her.

Azrael waved her hand dismissively, snorting on his words, and looked at Dwyne curiously. Dwyne who was silent all this time, looking at both bickering like kids, finally pointed at Azrael.

" See, I was right. It was you!!" Nat resorted to joy.

" What nonsense! I am not married…..oh wait." Azrael rolled her eyes and then turning her head back at Dwyne with dilated pupils.

"Wait. Are you talking about Augustus' guy?" She inquired, having an epiphany.

Dwyne just nodded to her question and left the way she came.

Nat was curious about who that person was,"Who is Augustus?"

"The guy who you treated last night." Azrael answered, putting the red leather book at its own place.

Nat stood silently thinking seriously, while Azrael walked upto the door at the right corner.

"Why did you not kill him? He is useless to you." Nat asked directly.

August can't give her full soul and without a full soul, their bond is useless. And someone like Azrael would never keep something futile. Then what was the purpose she was keeping it and even going to protect him.

Azrael's hand stopped midway from grasping the knob of the door. Her body halted at his query.

Till the night prior, she was planning to tell Schoel about it and banish the bond but when she saw him panicking in the bed, Azrael also heard the forbidden words from her past.

"Stop questioning. I just forgot to ask Schoel about it." Azrael cut him off and opened the door.

The door opened in a corridor with a door in front of them. Azrael moved towards the door on the other side.

Nat who heard her answer was not satisfied by it. She was not that. He needs to get to the root of it. Why was Azrael protecting a human?

Not being able to keep his curiosity, followed her to the apartment. At first, Nat didn't got a look at the scene, Azrael standing in front of him but once Azrael moved away from his.

His eyes were stupefied seeing the ten foot shadowy monster, strangling a woman to death. He almost forgot breathing, petrified at the doorstep.

"Augustus." Azrael's call brought him back to realization that what he was seeing was real. Good thing, he was not human and can survive without breathing. How can…a C-cadger enter the mortal realm?

And what did Azrael call him? Augustus? How…could a human become a cadger? Nat looked at Azrael who held the supposedly human and made him sit on the sofa.

The dark atmosphere almost choked Nat in the heavy air. The fog covering the man left, disclosing the young men trapped in.

Only then, Nat stepped in. The woman who was the victim was on the floor, coughing vigorously. Pitying the poor lady, Nat went up to her to help.

"You okay?" He asked, inspecting her wounds. Ailyn was too shocked to answer properly, but her eyes were stuck at the gentleman with silver hairs, something out of her reverie.

Azrael on the other hand, held on the sofa before the mist covered him again and killed that woman viciously. Her suspicions were right, but she can't tell him.

Azrael glanced at Ailyn on the floor who is getting treated by Nat on the floor. She must be his ex-girlfriend. Too bad she can't let him kill her.

August finally came back to consciousness, panting hard gasping for breath. The fog was gone completely, except his right hand.

It was still claws, but unlike fog it looked like completely burned blackened meat like charcoal.

"Take me…. away from…her…'' August tucked her sleeves and begged in a weak voice. He knew everytime he sees her, he will want to murder him. He was not a monster but she was making him one.
