Chapter 13: Security System
My cheeks warmed as he kissed me, then got up and left the room. He kissed me in front of the doctor! I blinked a few times, a bit startled by the knock.
"Come in! "
I spoke up a bit, knowing I wouldn't need to yell as she was likely a werewolf.
"Hi! I'm Bella and I'm going to attempt to draw some blood. Brandon told me you have some kind of magical barrier or shield going on?"
I nodded at her, her voice was cheery, and she seemed genuinely concerned. I watched her as she opened drawers and cabinets collecting the supplies, she would need to collect blood and a few other medical devices to do some basic readings. She was a beautiful girl, a bit heavier than a usual wolf physique, and very curvy. Her brown hair was shoulder length, not straight but not curly either. When she smiled two dimples appeared on her cheeks which added to her cheery demeanor. As I observed her, I saw her take out a deep green crystal from her pocket.
"what's that for?"
I blurted out letting my curiosity get the best of me. She followed my line of sight as I looked at the crystal and she smiled at me.
"I am hoping this will help me draw blood when its time, it will allow an energy exchange between us and I'm hoping whatever magical defense are up we can show them that we mean no harm." She smiled and continued setting things up next to me.
"For a pack of werewolves, you guys deal with magic quite a bit...." She nodded as I spoke and continued with the exam as usual. She let me know when she was going to touch me, what exactly she was doing and why. It was such a stark difference from what the coalition did, and it was actually pleasant compared to before. She secured a blood pressure cuff, heart monitor and O2 monitor to me and talked as she continued her work.
"Our Luna is a witch, and she did a lot of work to integrate magic into the pack. Our land has a magical forest, and we are sitting on top of a magical nexus. Also, a lot of our members can wield magic to a certain degree, a lot of it being minor things that have to do with nature. It didn't used to be so openly done but since the coalition's attack...Alpha and Luna bulked up on security measures." I nodded and glanced at the monitors. Watching as she took notes, she noticed her handwriting was nice and she smiled.
" I'm just recording the data and my observations, Brandon can give you a copy if you like, after we are done." I smiled and nodded.
"Can you tell me about Alaric? He seems nice enough but is he someone trustworthy do you think? " She nodded slowly and smiled.
"Alpha Alaric is kind but, he is much different than from before though...he used to like the parties and indulge in the ladies but after the attack, he pushed everything and everyone away, it's sad really, he used to smile and laugh and now.....I couldn't tell you the last time anyone saw him smile. I will be so happy when he finds his mate, then maybe he will find the joy in life again" she smiled at me as she set her clipboard down and started to remove the BP cuff. I frowned some thinking about how bad it must have been for everyone else too. I've been locked away thinking my hell is the only one that began that day...the entire world was plunged into hell I just didn't have the added stress of watching it all fall. She quickly spoke trying to not bring down the mood.
"Don't feel too bad, we all went through it, and we have all found happiness where we can, he spends a lot of time in nature and perfecting his skills, Gracie was set to take over and now that she is gone...." she trailed off, and took a deep breath. I placed a hand on her shoulder.
" Its ok I understand, she was beloved by the pack, I can feel it. My father always told me love never dies, it just changes shape. He even believed that mate bonds never die but just reform. "I smiled thinking of him and then directed my smile at Bella.
"So, in a way, no one is ever truly gone, their memory and love keep them alive through us. " She smiled up at me eyes glistening with unshed tears.
" Thank you for telling me that.... I didn't know I would be the one needing comfort, usually I'm the one giving it" she laughed lightly. She got her blood work stuff ready and brought the crystal between us.
" Ok place your hand on the crystal and I will do the same and we will see if your security system will let me in or not..." I chuckled, I guess I do have my own security system, now only if I had control of it that would be great. I placed my hand on the crystal, and it started to glow, and she nodded to herself.
"Ok this is a good sign, next I'm going to place my hand on, you will feel the difference in our energy, try not to block me or panic when you feel it." I nodded and watched as she placed her hand on the crystal as well. It glowed brighter and I could feel her presence through the crystal. Her energy was warm and inviting like a hug or the smell of breakfast in the morning but firm and solid like a rock and I could also feel her power…or as it her potential…. She was definitely strong under that cheery soft exterior she put forth. She kept her eyes closed but kept telling me what she planned to do next.
" You can remove your hand now, but you will still feel the sensation" she said, and we both removed our hands " this is a good sign, means you have a solid energy core.... its weakened ...." I felt her energy fluctuate some and seep into mine some "but overall, your core is strong." I smiled softly at her and watched as her eyes remained closed " Ok, before I move forward what were some of the things that happened when this protection was triggered?" I paused trying to recall.
"The worst one was it chopped a guys arm clean off." she made a face that said 'holy shit' and I chuckled " Don't worry, he was trying to .....touch me inappropriately....." my brow furrowed as I thought about all the times things went wrong at the Coalitions lab "Now that I think about it maybe it has something to do with intent....every time they tried something my shield did something to throw a wrench in their plans specifically things that would directly conflict with what they were trying to do. I remember another time they tried to just put me on a body scan machine and before they could even start the machine...I shorted out the electricity on the whole floor" She coughed trying to hide her laughter and bit her bottom lip.
"Sorry I don't mean to laugh; your situation isn't funny I just...can you imagine how mad they were!? serves them right though! medic and technology should be used to help people not tear them down or hurt them" she huffed apparently angry on my behalf. I took a deep breath and she seemed to relax also. "Don't be upset for me, it's over and I'm here now and I'm trying to focus on that "she nodded and changed subject.
"Ok well I guess we will just have to find out." she smiled.
"But just to be safe my only intent is to help you get stronger and healthier" I nodded and watched her; she kept her eyes closed the entire time since touching the crystal.
"Do you have to keep your eyes closed or does it help you concentrate " she nodded at my question.
"It helps me focus on the energies if I cut off one of my senses, wolves are naturally heightened so trying to focus on one can be difficult sometimes. But for me I can still sense your energy so even with my eyes closed I can sort of see where you are and gauge your emotional state, I'm guessing you asked because it seemed like I can still see?" I nodded "I get that a lot when I treat outsiders. Ok I'm going to try and draw blood; we only need one vial as we are just testing for nutrient levels" she kept her eyes closed but she had the needle and vial ready. She put a rubber band around my arm and swabbed the injection site with some brown stuff for a while "Ok You will feel prick and the pain should subside quickly. The crystal will keep our energy exchange open so you can feel my intent and hopefully I don't trigger anything" she counted "1....2...3!" I felt a pinch as I squeezed my eyes shut praying my shield doesn't hurt this genuinely nice woman. I held my breath and the monitor started getting louder beside me. I heard some stuff moving around, I finally felt her take out the needle and place some gauze there as I opened my eyes to see she was wrapping up my arm, eyes still closed.
" Looks like your hunch was correct!"
she said happily and she double tapped the crystal disconnecting us and opening her eyes. "I will leave the sample here as Brandon wanted to run the test himself, but my time is up, and Brandon will be back shortly!" she lingered for a moment and paused before opening the door to leave "Let me know when you're feeling better, and I can show you around sometime!
" She smiled sweetly at me, and I smiled back...did I just make a friend? I haven't had a friend in years, and she is probably waiting for me to say yes or no while I'm looking at her like an idiot! I cleared my throat awkwardly hoping my voice didn't betray me and come out as a squeaky nonsense " Sure! I would love that."
Thank goodness my nervousness wasn't showing too badly since my voice didn't crack like a teenage boy. I waved at her as she left the room.
