Chapter 8: The pale blue dot
I had planned this journey to earth extensively with J'onn as a way to continue my research, hopefully, improve Earth-Mars relations, and get away from all the racists. Around a year ago I had approached him and expressed my interest in going to mars to study an entirely new world, as interesting and varied as Mars is I can't publish much without jumping through hundreds of hoops, I also expressed my interest in teaching as I had enjoyed my time tutoring M'gann and would be unable to get any sort of respectable position on Mars.
J'onn had found the idea interesting and told me he would speak to the league as they were the ones to deal with all things extraterrestrial and would be able to assist in publishing my works and help with possibly finding a teaching position at a university.
We would be stopping at the watchtower as a sort of interplanetary TSA checkpoint where I would meet with whatever member of the league that would do some basic questioning and help me get started on earth.
The trip would take approximately 26 days and 12 hours, M'gann would come up near the middle of the trip. I would be keeping her company psychically and distracting her from how quiet it was in the space between the two worlds.
'J'onn, are you ready to go? I can hardly wait to explore this new world, especially the ocean city, it should be quite interesting to swim.' I ask excitedly to the older man floating towards his ship that M'gann had secretly already bonded with in order to successfully stow away. I was very impressed that she had managed to do that undetected
'I am S'ol, the Earth is a beautiful place Im sure you will enjoy it, Orin will be happy to hear that you are showing interest in his domain I'm sure he will accommodate a trip to Atlantis at some point.' J'onn replies good-naturedly.
I got the feeling that he is happy to have two other Martians on earth with him even if he doesn't know about the second one stowed away yet.
I follow the tall man onto the ship and take a seat in front of the screens that make up the window of the ship. As I sit down the ship vibrates beneath me as if purring and slowly begins to lift off of the ground and tilt toward a tunnel carved into the ceiling of the cavern city. suddenly the ship picked up speed and launched us into the tunnel before spitting us into an ever-expanding sky,
I could feel the multitudes of minds that made up the city fade into silence behind us on the planet below. The first time I beheld the vacuum of space I was on a strange vision quest and it has been 60 years since then, seeing the red sky break away into a tapestry of the night I was suddenly struck by a feeling of Waldeinsamkeit (the sensation of being completely alone in the woods/nature). Feeling that nearly indescribably emotion I quickly reached out to M'gann on a private psychic link and sent feelings of affirmation and comfort as to ease the transition.
'How are you feeling S'ol? The first time away from Mars is extremely jarring and discomforting, even after doing the trip so many times it is always a disquieting feeling.' J'onn asks concerned
'I am doing good J'onn, my time spent in the black trenches was very similar to this. The distance from the cities is great and there are creatures that dampen psychic reception and broadcast.' I respond calmly
'I got in a bit of trouble for describing my times in the Black Trenches in my autobiography, it was a bit too scary for some of the younger readers apparently.' I chuckle sheepishly
'I can see that happening, not everyone has your proclivity for tussling with nature. I have never been to the black trenches myself and am personally happy with reading your account of them' J'onn responds.
The days pass by as I keep M'gann company in the mental construct I made for her so she wouldn't feel claustrophobic, and pass my time talking with J'onn and making initial predictions on how my martian animal forms will perform in earth's atmosphere.
13 days into the trip M'gann hesitantly reached out psychically as she entered the bridge of the ship. J'onn startled slightly and turned to the unexpected guest
'Hello, uhm im realy sorry for stowingawayandbondingwiththeshipandnottellingyoubutIneededtogetout..' M'gann lets out in a panicked rush
Moving beside her I stop her rambling with a hand on her shoulder and sent her some supportive feelings
'This is M'gann, my cousin and your niece, one of the 5 white Martians in the entirety of our family.' I say slightly pointedly, sending images of how exactly the rest of the family felt about her and my presence.
'You know that study is not the only reason I am leaving Mars J'onn, she is no different' I say with finality
'I can understand both of your reasonings, but I must contact your parents M'gann, if they allow you to accompany S'ol and I, Then I shall allow it as well.' J'onn responds after a moment of contemplation. He turns and leaves toward the communication equipment a second later to contact M'ganns parents.
'Oh god, I should have stayed hidden! What if my parents say no!?' M'gann exclaims in a panic
'Don't worry your parents know how strong you are, plus you are going with a superhero and a famous adventurer so you couldn't be safer!' I say confidently
'okay... everything is kind of hitting me right now, oh god what about M'comm he's my little brother and he's going through the same things I am!' She begins to break down at the end of her frantic thought
'Don't worry M'gann, I have made sure he will be able to get into whatever he wishes with a lot of bribes and letting some friends I made know to take care of him' I respond. This was actually super important because M'ganns younger brother basically becomes martian Hitler attempting to genocide all the green and red Martians and allies with Darkseid. So it's either try and give him support or kill him in the crib, I decided to give him a bit of support.
J'onn returns not much later projecting some happiness and curiosity.
'Hello M'gann, It is good to finally meet you, your parents have allowed you to come with me to earth, but I must ask what you wish to accomplish with me?' J'onn inquires
'I want to do what you do! You are a hero, I want to help people just like you do! I also maybe wanted to see the planet where Megan comes from...' M'gann trails off sheepishly at the end of her thought.
'I understand, many of the other members of the league have proteges it shouldn't be hard for me to do the same. But I expect you to fully apply yourself to the work.' J'onn agrees but his tone brokers no argument
'eeeeEEEEEE! Yes, I understand, I won't let you down! ' M'gann practically glows with excitement and happiness.
Sighing contentedly I turn to look out of the viewport at the slowly approaching pale blue dot hung and a sunbeam.

Gumbus super basic chapter just on explaining how M'gann joins up with the crew, while also hopefully retconning a big problem in the future but who knows it might still happen.
