Chapter 4: Chapter 4: Surprise Surprise

Michael's POV

My head was still reeling from the events of last night. After returning I had little to no time to process everything that happened. Between the pack calling for me and Jane's father trying to scare me into blindly submitting to him and his daughter, I couldn't take a moment for myself.

Havana...my Havana was taken by some idiot douche bag who didn't know her worth, and worst of all we argued about it, and he dared to test me as if I couldn't rip him apart with my bare hands.

“Alpha," the voice was timid but loud enough to demand my attention.

I look up from the files spread over my desk, a slightly irritated look across my face. My pack was more than just family. When I took over as Alpha they became my responsibility, the good, the bad, and the annoying were on me.

I raise a brow waiting for him to explain why I was being interrupted and more importantly why was he the one to do so. "There's a woman here to see you,” he speaks. I think his name was Simon, a messenger for the packs internal affairs.

“Send her away, I’m busy.”

This wasn’t the first time I was notified of a woman requesting to visit me. Some of them tried heavily to throw themselves at me and that was something I could never agree to. I wanted a strong woman, not one who easily submitted to any man around her rape silly without knowing him truly. “Is there something else?” I asked, trying to figure out why he was still standing before me in the doorway looking rather pathetic.

“I tried, but she says it’s urgent and sir, she’s human,” he explains. Human. The word caught me off guard. My pack and I rarely had any dealings with the humans, just a mutual understanding of staying out of each other’s way.

“I’ll meet her at the border,” I simply respond. I couldn’t be sure of the conversation’s severity with this mystery woman so it was best to go talk then blow her off completely. I stood from the desk, the brown office chair rolling further from the desk with my movement. I close the manila folder containing the documents I had been reviewing. Being an Alpha was like owning a business -- finances were everything. I grab the thin brown jacket I had placed on the back of the chair earlier, sliding my muscled arms through the sleeves with ease.

“Follow me, sir.”

I walk out of the office with him behind me as we shut the large mahogany doors, the office automatically locking on its own. Whatever this human had to say I hope it was worth the interruption.

Following him throughout the manor was tedious. He said no words, just walked swiftly with expectance that I would follow. I could hear the fear of my proximity in his heartbeat, fast and always skipping a beat.

Upon coming to the clearing, the back of a blonde-haired woman faced me. Her hair was high in a ponytail, but still trailing down her back gently. The lilac top clung to her back, fitted perfectly as if tailored to her. The jeans fit her snug and accentuated every curve that she had. She was a woman who knew her assets and how to use them.

“Humans don’t come here often. How can I help you?” I ask. The sooner she left my property, the better.

The woman turned to face me, her blue eyes soft and almost eager to see me. “Havana, what are you doing here?” I ask. The shock was, to say the least, not only had she come to visit me, but the biggest shock of all was that she was a human. The times that I had seen her were on wolf soil and I just assumed she was like me.

“Can I talk to you alone?” She asked sheepishly, placing her hand behind her head and scratching her neck, her eyes darting between me and my pack member.

I subtly dismiss and put my hands in my pocket. I couldn’t imagine why she would be here and currently; I couldn’t decide if she were a friend or an enemy.

“Thank you,” she says once he’s out of her eyesight. I could still hear his footsteps as they slowed, he was staying nearby to ensure my safety.

“What are you doing here?” By her expression, I assume my voice had been colder than my intent. Though I thought her to be a phenomenal woman, she was still a human woman, someone that I could never just off that fact alone.

“I wanted to apologize for Kaden last night. He was out of line and taking out his frustrations on you. He recently got into a fight with his family and had a little too much to drink,” she explains. This is what she came here for, to apologize on behalf of that low life.

"What's his excuse for the way he talks to you," I ask. I was curious, how was she going to justify the way he treated her last night? She shrugs her arms carelessly as if she were used to the question and content without having an answer.

“He doesn’t mean it. Everyone gets stressed and says things they don’t mean at times,” she tries to reason, her eyes vividly displaying the sadness behind them. I could see the ear playing inside her, she knew she deserved better, yet she stood there accepting the absolute worst for her.

“He doesn’t know how to treat you or anyone for that matter. How can you be with someone like that? You deserve better, do you understand that?” I asked.

I took a step towards her. I needed her to know that I would never treat her the way he had the night prior nor would I allow anyone else to disrespect her the way he had. I took her hand and placed my index finger underneath her chin.

“You deserve the world,” I whisper. I wasn’t sure what it was that was compelling me to say these words to her, but I didn’t care either.

“Michael,” she breathed.

This feeling I had was crazy. I had only just met her, and yet my feelings were so strong. I thought so highly of her even though she was human, but I knew this couldn’t amount to more than a friendship.

I was getting married, whether I liked Jane or not and she was with that Kaden idiot. I pulled myself away from her. I couldn’t put her or myself in this impossible situation no matter how much I wanted to.

“Can we be friends? Real friends, ones that call each other?” I ask. It was worth a shot. She giggles, the soft sounds leaving her lips creating a sweet sound to my ears.

“I’d like that very much,” she agrees. It was settled. If I couldn’t have her romantically, I would have to settle for having her platonically. The sheer thought of not having her at all made my stomach turn.

“Can I ask you something else, as a friend?” She nods allowing me to question her further. The answer didn’t matter, but I was curious after all. She was a human in wolf soil and accepting of what I was. There weren’t many humans that did that so easily. “When were you going to tell me you were human?”

“Does it matter? Will you stop being my friend because I am?” She challenged. Part of me felt like she was teasing me as if she somehow knew that no matter what I wouldn’t abandon her.

“I would never leave you,” I answered her honestly.

There was nothing she could do that would make me leave her side or think of her less. From the moment I laid eyes on her, I saw perfection. I thought of her as the true definition of it and I wouldn’t leave her.

I couldn’t try even if I wanted to.
