Chapter 51: Bred for War

The glaive pierced through a knight's hauberk, killing him instantly.

Goleil dodged a sword strike to his ribs, separating another knight's arm from his body.

Goleil caught a spear thrust in his hand. He stared at the last knight remaining, watching as the man squirmed and tried to pry his weapon free, eventually giving up and drawing his side-arm, a short sword.

The knights wore no plate, only a great helm and a chainmail hauberk that covered most of their bodies. Over it, they wore matching red tabards.

The knight slashed at Goleil's head, but to the sun knight, it seemed painfully slow. Instead of dodging, he interrupted the attack with a devastating thrust that ripped a hole in the knight, throwing him like a doll towards the other side of the ring.

Goleil sighed.

He looked over at Guyan, who shouted, "Great work on the knights and champions! Lower Manaforging is next!"

Goleil nodded, readying himself.

The air vibrated as a hand reached out from the void, tearing the space open as it emerged.

It wore light plate armor, a greatsword in its hands.

Goleil could feel himself getting excited, a red aura beginning to form around him.

The space closed as the three-meter-tall looked down on him menacingly.

Goleil circulated his mana and rushed towards the knight, but it was faster.

The sun knight hastily ducked as the massive sword threatened to split him in half, but he was also in range to strike.

While the knight was off balance from its swing, Goleil plunged his glaive into the knight's eye. The force of his strike blew a hole straight into the knight's head, casting a red mist behind him.

Goleil stood up straight as he realized the fight was over. The tall knight was dissipating into mana, but Goleil felt unsatisfied.

'At least he was able to surprise me with his speed. I let my guard down because of all those earlier battles, but now that I know their capabilities, I'm disappointed. Not only that, but they wear such little armor it feels like cheating.'

Goleil sighed. 'How long will it take to get to a real challenge?!' He shouted internally.

Ty'Bral materialized. "I'm glad you didn't come here last time you were here, or you might've died of boredom."

Goleil chuckled as two ripples began to open.

'Better get to work,' He thought.

Goleil readied himself once more.

...

While the Sun Guard was dying of boredom, the spectators were doing anything but.

Most of them were utterly mesmerized. Watching Goleil destroy foes they could never hope to defeat was truly awe-inspiring.

Had Goleil been struggling, they might've been jealous of his strength, as they were of Sir Khalid bin Walid. However, beyond a certain gap in power, one could only admire.

The spear wielders, in particular, were fervently taking notes and analyzing the Vreans combat style. After all, this was a perfect opportunity to learn from an absolute master, the last one of such masters.

Guard Captain Guyan watched the man in front of him in amazement. He almost didn't notice when the Adalian knight walked to a spot beside him.

The knight leaned over to Guyan and said, "He is verily incredible, is he not?"

Guyan nodded. "Of course. He is the last member of a legendary order of knights. How could he not?"

Goleil finished up a group of three lower manaforgers, beheading the last one.

Khalid nodded. "How far dost thou think he wilt go?"

"He might make it to the Higher Manaforgers."

Khalid chuckled. "He might very well. Hath no one ever made it past the third mid-level manaforger, so if anyone can, it's him."

Goleil finished a group of four lower manaforgers, his aura still growing.

As five ripples rocked the ring, Goleil readied himself once more.

The five identical knights stepped from their portals, and for a second, nothing happened.

Goleil moved first, separating a knight from his legs in an instant.

The four others thrust their blades towards him in unison. Goleil jumped back, creating distance from the four.

As the four knights overextended, Goleil rushed in, caving in one knight's head and plunging his glaive into another knight's abdomen in a small crevice between the light plate armor.

Only two knights remained on either side of him. One swung at his head, and the other tried stabbing him in the chest.

Goleil dodged the swing at his head and caught the thrust with his free hand.

'Wasn't sure I could do that,' he thought.

He wrenched the sword from the knight's hand, decapitating the knight.

Goleil turned to face the last knight and suddenly threw his weapon to the side. The knight seemed to take the invitation and tried to cleave him in half with a single massive overhead strike.

Guyan leaned forward. "What in the netherworld is he doing?!"

Goleil caught the sword with his bare hands. The force of the strike had forced him into a precarious position, but he could pry the blade free from its owner's grip. He threw it to the other side of the ring, then caved his helmet in with his fist.

The Guard Captain sighed in relief.

Sir Khalid bin Walid shook his head. The Sun Guard didn't seem tired at all; no, he seemed bored! The Adalian knight smiled underneath his helmet, and it seemed he was destined to be defeated again.

Goleil looked over at Guard Captain Guyan, who had a wide grin. "Mid-Level Manaforgers next!" He shouted.

The sun knight nodded and prepared for combat.

"This guy is crazy! It's like he's bred for war," One of the nearby knights said.

Suddenly, the air began to vibrate powerfully, at a level Goleil hadn't felt before. Not even close.

From a ripple in space, a three-meter-tall man emerged. He wore no shoes, black pants, and a sleeveless jacket that came down to his mid-thighs. Over his face, he wore a dark veil that obscured his face. And in his hand, a massive curved blade gleamed dangerously.

The man seemed to stare into Goleil's soul, even if he couldn't see his eyes.

Goleil chuckled. "Finally, we can begin."
