Chapter 38: No Idols

'I don't believe we asked for you to follow us.' Zani said, and narrowed his gaze at those suddenly following them. Kendra gave a shrug of her shoulders, no one else seemed inclined to not follow. This alleyway came out into a thick group of trees.

"What is it?" Xerxes asked the small group. He was actually annoyed at being followed at the moment. He'd seen Kendra and listened to the words being spoken. He knew that Belis was going to strike out at her. He'd felt anger when she'd been shoved and hit the ground. Though she was fast to get out of the way. He hadn't meant to insert himself so quickly, but what was done was done.

"Are you going to do something about what happened?" Belis asked and his green eyes met her gold ones.

"What would you like me to do? To retaliate will only get more killed. I'm leaving it up to you. I simply help to move you to it." Kendra looked at the group, and then at Xerxes. Xerxes didn't see it, or didn't want to.

He spoke the truth, he wasn't looking to lead, but this group saw him as that. In their world where they ran and hid to keep the humans at bay, he'd stepped forward and showed them where to strike. How to get into the human society. Kendra knew that he'd done this in other places. She was sure that there were powerful figures in the world in certain countries that weren't human.

"You can't just show up and tell us what to do and then not follow through." Belis said.

"I am following through, I'm watching you aren't I? Making sure that you aren't in danger before I leave." Xerxes goal was to see the end of mankind's reign and the start of another. It was all that was required of him at the moment.

"This can't go unpunished. These humans think they will stop us with force. We are a greater one than they, just smaller."

"I'm glad to hear you think so. That group attacked, I know that in that city their political leader is fae." His eyes moved to the taller, more muscular male with lighter hair. He will see to it that it is dealt with." Kendra knew that she had been right.

"What is your main plan, this going city to city would take years to get our kinds into power."

"It has taken years." He said. "And that was needed before actual attacks. Do you think that if we just started fighting with humans it would be easy? We have no one in power over the billions of humans that live. Now we have a very small foothold. So we may attack, and not worry so much should war break out."

"But it grows closer, what would you suggest is next?" Tiko asked seriously and Xerxes pinched the bridge of his nose. He felt Zani's amusement.

'See this is what you get for being so zealous over the years at pushing the supernatural community forward. Like lost puppies.' Zani said mentally with humor.

'Shut up.' He said privately to him, out loud to the others he spoke. "It's your job to figure it out, I have many more to find and push forward as you are now doing. Kirosho has already stepped up fast in the two weeks since I met you."

"He has, and Yori has many friends higher up. It helps and their voices are being heard." Belis said. "Where would you attack next?" Xerxes let out a loud breath.

"I would attack their facilities where they hide our kind, create weapons." He looked at Kendra, his words meant that he would kill those who posed the most threat.

"We have to find them first. Do you know where they are?"

"Only a few, Kendra knows where a very large and powerful one is." They looked at her and she felt very on the spot. He was asking her to tell them where they took the other species so they could destroy it and those there. She was torn, but deep inside she knew that she'd have to fall on a side.

"The one that these humans use is across the ocean, and several islands large. They conduct experiments there and are very secure. No one comes in or out without being known. She said, "They are unmarked, unmapped and out near the Galapagos Islands."

"Clearly we will have to wait on that one." The fae said and seemed to think.

"Tell me where there is another. I grow tired of these humans hunting us and destroying our homes."

"There is one in northern Russia." Xerxes said. "Most of it is below ground, so I don't know much about the size."

"Easy enough, I know one who has second sight. She will help me and I will find others to help as well." He got the location and turned leaving. The fae seemed all to happy to do this.

"We'll help as well in any way we can." Tiko just gave Xerxes a head bob and left him as well. The young girl smiled at him and turned to go after the others.

"You should help them plan." Kendra said as he turned and moved in a different direction and back toward the city, just to a different part.

"It is their job, I can't help those that don't help themselves." Xerxes stated.

"You don't like to do the actual work?" She said running after him and coming alongside of him.

"I do plenty of it, and I will be there to make sure they have the help they need when it is needed." He looked at her. "I don't want them to see me as a leader, as a symbol or something. They might not be humans, but in the end all society has its idols. If I die or am killed it will not be a setback for them. They move as one, but as many groups at once too."

"I see." She got what he was doing. He wanted them to see the attacks on others and be driven by it, to change it. Not be set back or second guess themselves for it, just like the hydra the more heads you cut off the more popped up.

"Where are you going now?" She asked.

"Shouldn't you be back there?" He asked as she walked next to him keeping pace.

"They aren't nearly as exciting as you are. Besides, I haven't really felt wanted there." Kendra admitted.

"Who said you were wanted here?" Xerxes said with a slight smirk. She gave him a half smile glancing at him.

"I think you want me here." Her smile was secretive and sexy. There was a response instantly in him. Yep, that one time was not enough.

'He does, I don't mind you here. It gets dull talking to the same wall after a while.' Zani stated. She gave a small laugh looking at Zani.

"Do you? Freeloader." She said and Xerxes smiled this time. Zani gave an indignant snort.

'I would feel bad if I'd done something wrong.'

"He doesn't get out much, nor attention from the opposite sex." Xerxes supplied.

"You seem like a recluse as well." She said, talking with him was nice. Joking with him felt better, it lifted a weight she hadn't known was there. "I don't see how either of you get much attention from the opposite sex."

'She's calling you ugly Xerxes.'

'Only because I have a hideous growth on my shoulder.' Kendra laughed. It was carefree and floated on the night air. It was affecting the two of them, her good mood, and neither really realized it.

"I don't find you ugly." She said her gaze moving over Xerxes and she liked the sudden heat in his gaze at her words. The way that she looked at him.

"Either of you." She moved on.

"However Zani, if you don't mind, I'd prefer Xerxes body to yours. Not sure it would work out well." She heard Xerxes deeper laugh and liked the sound of it.

'It's alright, you're not my type anyways. Kind of breakable.' She laughed a bit more and moved with him down the street. It was nice to not have someone following you, to be able to talk to a person and not be worried that you might say something that would make them angry. That they could accept your differences easily.

Xerxes liked talking with her, and so did Zani for that matter. They didn't feel so alone all of a sudden. Even if her being what she was caused it. They liked it, needed it. Even with Demetri they didn't feel quite as… whole in a sense.

"So where is it you are going?" She looked at him, her ice blue eyes questioning. "Not off to get rid of my humans are you?"

"I thought they weren't your humans." He said.

"They aren't. but a couple of them I'm attached to." She admitted.

'They deserve to be eaten.' Zani said. 'We need to speak with Demetri. We will be leaving shortly.' Zani said and leapt down to the ground. 'I hunger and must find some food.'

"You're leaving, to go where?" She asked not sure how to feel about that, was it for a good or bad reason?

"To help someone and others at the same time." Xerxes stated.

"Getting rid of a certain human group?" She asked.

"More like compound. Does it really matter?" He said to her. "Why ask when it will just anger you."

"I guess I just feel compelled to ask." he looked at her.

"Do you really care what happens to them, or is it just the idea of life ending that bothers you?" She looked at him pausing and he stopped waiting for her to answer. She'd never been asked that before and she had to think for a moment.

"All loss of life is sad. Every death pushes your kind to extinction. You should know the feeling of being alone, it isn't enjoyable." Kendra told him.

"Yet here we are, alone with no one." Was Xerxes answer.

"You have Zani and Demetri, the others that you have spoken to. I'm here, you aren't really alone." Kendra said.

"Besides filling the empty void for a while, what can all the rest do for me? For Zani?" He asked and couldn't help the bit of fire that jumped in his gaze. "Friendship can only do so much. We won't get the chance to have family. To have more." The words spilled out of him before he could stop them.

Kendra felt that anguish hit him, and it affected her so greatly. More than it affect anyone else, she didn't know when she reached out to touch him, just that she was. She needed to pull at that pain again that was eating away at him. It was deep and heartfelt.

'Because of me.' She heard the echo of his thought as she was touching him. He hadn't spoken out loud, and she didn't think that he even spoke to Zani. Just a stray thought at himself. But she heard it, and the impact to his own being was brutal. His failure as a companion and brother, to his physical half.

"You can't change others then?" She asked tentatively, then added. "Conroy said that your venom reacted to fast with humans. Ever try another?"

Xerxes looked at her, his venom was deadly to humans and werewolves. Vampires screamed in absolute pain when he injected it and all it took was the smallest dose of it. He thought about telling her that she could change, but didn't. He didn't want someone to become what he and Zani were because they felt obligated or it might be something different. No he needed a mate, not a friend or companion. Nothing short of his mate would be enough for Zani's to hatch. He wouldn't give false hope, it was all Zani asked.

"None can become what we are." He said simply. "We are the end of our species." Kendra couldn't help but feel for him. Some part of her actually hurt, hurt so bad at his words. She knew that if Demetri's words were true she could become what he was, but what would that do in the end? She didn't think pity was something he would like.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to bring up such a sore subject." Because it obviously was and she felt it. He gave a shrug and she sighed.

"Zani is the one that has a worse time with it doesn't he?" She didn't know why she knew this or why she asked, but just did.

"Yes." He said reaching up and touching her hair. His gaze was on it as his fingers slid through the soft silky strands. He was closer to her and a hand moved to her hip holding her there. She didn't mind at all when his head dipped and he dragged her scent into his lungs. His nearness made her body react and her womb clench.

"Why is it harder for him?" She asked in a trembling voice, trying to make it a bit stronger than it was. She turned her head just a bit to look at him, but her turning of her head brought her mouth grazing against his. It was distracting and perhaps that was why he did it. To distract and shift things in a different direction.

Kendra moved forward instead of pulling her head back, wanting that taste of him. He did kiss her as she wanted him to, but it was slow and leisurely. She loved it, gripping the front of his shirt as the kiss deepened and her insides went into meltdown. Why'd he feel so good, why'd she want him to do whatever he pleased? One touch and it was like a raging wildfire, she loved it. Which probably made her out of her mind.

She felt his hand sliding through her hair again and he pulled his mouth back from hers for a moment, a kind of sad expression. He didn't seem to be completely seeing her, lost somewhere, somewhere in a very painful thought. Kendra just wanted to know why, she wanted to help ease that pain. She felt it like her own for a moment. She didn't realize that she was infecting him in that moment with how close they were. The intimacy was shared and Xerxes spoke before he realized it.

"Because he sees his mate everyday and will never know her. That she will eventually die and there is nothing we can do to stop it."

His gaze was a darker green than normal and meeting hers, he blinked and seemed to realize what he had said and stepped back from her. His gaze went rather hard all of a sudden and turned moving away from her, she felt anger around him. It was a mix directed at himself and at her. Kendra knew that most times around her, other's guards dropped and they did or said things because of that. He'd clearly spoken before he thought, and she had caused it unwillingly.
