Chapter 40: Excuse Me?
"Is everything alright?" Kanzaki asked as he set down the fork he had been holding. The way she was shaking was not normal and he was concerned about why she was feeling that way. If it was something bad then he wanted her to go to the doctor as soon as possible.
However, once Kanzaki put the fork down the shaking stopped which caught his attention a little more. Now he was watching when she would start shaking and the moment he touched his fork it would start but she was staring at something above him.
"Yeah, I'm fine I've always had this nervous tick when someone tries my food. It's just something that has plagued me since I was little don't let it bother you." Selena said not willing to look in Kanzaki's eyes when she said the lie. She was instead staring above him at the fancy smoke detector he had.
When Kanzaki heard this his worries went away instantly, "Oh that's good I thought you were sick or something. I thought you also might have been worried if the smoke detectors you gave me worked or not." Kanzaki said making a joke at the end. He didn't actually think she was worried about them but he wanted to lighten the mood he messed up by making a joke that they both knew.
However, when Kanzaki looked over at Selena she wasn't laughing or even smiling. Instead, her jaw was slightly dropped in confusion as she looked above her and then back at Kanzaki a few times before asking a question that confused him as well, "What smoke detector?" Selena asked with a confused tone.
"What do you mean what smoke detector? A delivery guy came to the door today saying that every apartment had to have this new smoke detector. They said that you gave these out to every apartment and that it was a decision made by you." Kanzaki said back confused. He was starting to have a bad feeling since the person that was supposed to have made this decision was also the most confused about what he was talking about.
When Selena heard what Kanzaki said she shot up from her chair and immediately began looking around the room, "How many of these have you put up?" She asked as she stared at the smoke detector in his living room.
When Kanzaki heard this he went into a state of panic since there seemed to be something wrong happening, "I put them up in every room except the bathroom. Every other room has one of them in the middle of the ceiling." Kanzaki explained with worry all over his face.
Once Selena knew the location of all of them she wasted no time moving the food out of the way and stepping on top of the dinner table. When she did this Kanzaki had a scene in front of him he had never seen before, 'Black.' Kanzaki thought before turning around with a red face.
Selena was too busy with the smoke detectors to realize the blunder that just happened. Once she was standing on the table and got her hands on the smoke detector she wasted no time trying to unscrew it and instead ripped it off of the ceiling.
The smoke detector ripped off pretty easily so there was no major damage to the ceiling but Selena wasn't worried about this since she threw it on the ground right after and moved to the next room. During this entire ordeal, Kanzaki was just following behind her in a trance since he had no idea what was going on.
The delivery man seemed genuine and Kanzaki had even had his guard up at first. It was to the point now that he had no idea how he was supposed to trust someone else without risking something weird like this happening again.
Once Selena visited every room with a smoke detector and ripped it off the ceiling she piled them all in one pile in Kanzaki's living room, "Who gave you these?" Selena asked with a new tone in her voice.
It wasn't the normal tone that Kanzaki had heard since he met her. If her normal voice was like a tame kitten then this was like ferocious tiger moments away from ripping someone's face off, "Some delivery guy showed up and gave them to me. He was wearing a medical mask and a hat so I have no idea what he looks like." Kanzaki said nervously when he heard Selena's tone.
"YOU HAD NO IDEA WHO HE WAS YET YOU ACCEPTED SOME RANDOM BOX?! YOU COULD HAVE BEEN DRUGGED OR WHO KNOWS WHAT!" Selena shouted catching Kanzaki completely off guard. The way that she was acting was not the normal Selena that Kanzaki knew and truthfully it scared him a little bit.
It wasn't the good crazy and it definitely wasn't the comforting crazy, "I'm sorry. I will be more careful next time." Kanzaki said with a sad tone in his voice. The way she was talking to him reminded Kanzaki of past memories and things he never wanted to talk about regularly.
Before Kanzaki knew it tears threatened to fall down his face but when he remembered the last time he cried with Fria he sucked the tears as far back as he could into his eyelids refusing to let them fall down. He wasn't a child and wouldn't act like one even under strange circumstances like this.
Even though Kanzaki tried to conceal the way he was beginning to feel as best he could Selena still saw this and her anger went away like it was never there. Once she had finally got her sense of self back the regret and shame crashed like a tidal wave, "I'm so sorry I didn't mean to be like that." Selena said with a sad tone in her voice as well.
Tears never came down her face since she knew from past experiences with her husband that tears never change anything and that the only way for them to be happy again was to beat her until she couldn't move or walk. Punch her until every bone in her body was broken. In her mind, she deserved this since the one person that gave her happiness she didn't give the happiness back and instead made them sad.
