Chapter 10: Chapter 10. Lyrics

MELODY'S Point of View

I sat down on a bench in the park. It was early October, I kicked passed the amber leaves, it helped me clear my head and hopefully write down some lyrics.

I needed a song before Friday.

Everyone else seemed to just sing someone else's but my true strengths are from the songs I write.

I find it very hard to perfectly hit the notes of someone else's song.

"It's already Wednesday, think Mel think!"

Seth must be frustrated, I had hesitated to sit at lunch with him earlier in the day, he just continued to smile at me, then kissed me and turned back towards Sage's table.

I'd never been like this in a relationship, playing 'hot and cold' wasn't part of my behavior pattern at all. But I knew that if I had looked just a second longer at his bright hazel eyes, his dark curls, his eager face. I won't be able to write anything, I can't afford to fail and I can't afford an average grade either. My scholarship is counting on it.

"Melody!"

I looked up closing my lyric book by reflex, I was looking at a man I'd never seen before and he knew my name.

He looked like he was in his late forties, the vague curtain of sunlight passed through the trees and showed in patches across his face, I particularly noticed his eyes in a shade of watercolor hue, the translucent blue of an April sky.

"Who are you?"

"Melody Violet Campbell."

I felt even more uncomfortable, it was my mother's surname he called, not Hatchanova. Who is this guy? I don't remember having any other relatives apart from Aunt Anneliese.

"Your twin is Melanie, am I right?"

Now I'd risen to my feet, I hardly ever talk about Melanie and even if I did, I never mentioned she was my twin, even Seth doesn't know about it.

I chanted a protection spell in my mind, just in case he was armed.

"Don't you remember me?"

He took a step closer.

"Stay back!"

I warned, I could sense he was so much stronger than me, if I wanted to get out of here unharmed I'll need to act smartly, even if I call for help, he could attack me in a fraction of a second.

"Melody, don't you see a resemblance? I'm Gael Portega."

The air I'd sucked in emptied from my lungs.

Father?

"So what? You left my Mom nineteen years ago, why are you here now?"

So much had clouded my mind beforehand, I needed to get the lyrics, I needed to make time for Seth, I needed to learn how to communicate my feelings better, I needed more time - I don't want to add more to that.

"I didn't leave her, she was the one who ran off and took you two away from me."

"She wouldn't have run off if you'd just listened to her."

The very sight of him annoyed me. I turned to walk out of the park, he moved quickly latching unto my arm.

"Melody, wait please—"

"Mr. Portega, let go of my hand."

My voice thinned, barely squeezing threw the knot in my throat.

I refused to let myself get emotional. If I did, my eyes would expose me right away.

"I just want to know how you've been, please just let's just talk for a bit."

I continued trying to wriggle out of his grip.

"Let go of her!"

Luke quickly separated us.

"Melody please."

"Another time, Mr. Portega."

I won't be so harsh next time, I just really need to be on my own and finish this before the exam soon. As we moved to a farther end of the park, he teleported someone else.

"Thanks, Luke."

I didn't want to have anything else to do with him, but he did help me out.

"Who was that guy anyway?"

The bench squawked in protest as I slumped into it.

I ignored him. His breath escaped on a ragged sigh when he realized I wasn't planning on regarding him.

"None of your business."

I finally pressed out flatly.

"Melody."

He spoke softly. I looked up at him, he reached for my hand but I moved out of his reach. A wry smile tipped the corner of his lips.

He's such a creep!

"I want us to get back together."

I almost laughed, my amusement was evident on my face.

"There is no us anymore, so get over me already."

The tiny frown between his brow's deepened as he absorbed the words. I stoop up, I needed to get away from this park. I've just been meeting the wrong people here. He grabbed onto my arm so fast that I almost stumbled backward. Seriously! what's with men and holding my hand today?

"Melody I—"

Luke suddenly grunted in pain.

I turned to see his suddenly white face, he looked like he was in excruciating pain, he swiftly let go of my hand. It seemed so agonizing, he was struggling to breathe, his lips trembled and his eyes grew watery, his skin was sizzling, without a fire.

"Luke, what's going on?"

I felt a pair of eyes stare holes into the back of my head.

I turned around, it was Seth. He was almost twelve feet away. He had this murderous aura around him. Luke groaned, doubling over, writhing in pain. I ran over to Seth.

I noticed the grass around where he stood was slowly turning to ashes, is this what his darkness does? He hasn't even touched Luke yet.

"You told me you were going out to do something important, was it to meet him?"

His voice was jarring, blood-curdling, it tunelessly pierced my ears and made me shift apprehensively, I wondered if it was safe to touch him right now.

My silence seemed to fuel his anger, it sent a sheer feeling of foreboding down the length of my spine.

The nearby trees visibly wilted, any leftover amber leaves on their branches turning to ashes and were blown away by the autumn wind.

What should I do? I heard a whimper from Luke. I caused it but I was unsure if I could fix it.

"Seth, please stop!"

His pupils had turned to white glimmering slits swimming in a pool of darkness. He slowly pushed past me, heading for Luke.

"Seth, Seth!"

I held him back, Luke grimaced at the gnawing pain, his eyes lolled backwards and he passed out. His darkness could kill?

"Seth please, please, I'm sorry."

Dread polled in my gut. What if Luke actually dies?

I didn't let go of his hand but he wasn't budging either.

Seth's arm felt so cold, his face without expression and he didn't even look at me. I clasped my hands tightly around him, I held him close for warmth, I didn't know what else to do, I held on so tight he couldn't move any longer.

"Seth I'm sorry please, please stop. Luke might die."

"I asked if you came out here to see him?"

I looked up, his eyes were still void and filled with darkness.

"No Seth."

Still holding onto him.

"Seth, I'm sorry, I'm sorry I shut you out like that without an explanation, I just couldn't concentrate any longer on writing the lyrics and I was getting really frustrated. I'm sorry, stop being mad at Luke please."

He stopped moving, I felt his arms slowly encircle around me, I met his eyes, and they flickered back to their combination of green, gold and brown colouring. Tears threatened to fall out of my eyes, my lower lip quivering.

"I'm sorry."

I said again, squeezed and then released him. Luke coughed jolting him awake but the trees and grass were gone.

Seth and I sat and cuddled on the bench, the warmth radiating from multiple layers of clothes felt comfortable and enthralling.

"Can your darkness kill someone?"

That question had been weighing on my mind for a while, I finally asked it when Seth parked in front of the campus. He moved uneasily in his seat.

"Yes, it can."

My gaze dropped to my shoes and then I lifted them back to him again.

"I'm sor—"

"Stop apologizing."

He didn't look at me.

"I never want to be the reason your darkness grows like that."

Seth still didn't look at me. I could feel hot tears burning my eyes as I suppressed them.

"Melody."

I immediately turned to face him, I was so surprised to see him so close to me, our lips were almost touching.

"You can tell me about what's bothering you, you don't have to keep it all to yourself, you can talk to me, I'll always be here to listen and be here for you. It hurts when I see you struggling all by yourself, you may think you're troubling me, but to me, the more you include me in your life is showing me how much you care."

Seth's words were reassuring. I felt like a fool for a hundredth time in this relationship.

"Okay, I'll do that."

Seth didn't miss any opportunity he could get to kiss me, but today he leaned back into his seat.

"So how far have you gone with the lyrics for the song?"

"Just the first six lines, I'm presenting it on Friday, I'm so screwed."

"Can I hear it?"

I smiled.

"You're just grabbing any opportunity you can to hear my voice."

"Of course."

***

SETH'S Point of View.

"Wow, you've been humming that song all day,"

Serena had noticed. We were all studying in the palace library.

"Melody wrote it."

"Whoa! she wrote that? She's pretty cool."

Skipper yelled from the far end of the reading table.

"She's just having problems with lyric formation"

Sage looked at me.

"You know, Tiger's Mom is a songwriter, why don't you tell her to help out your girlfriend?"

That thought did not cross my mind at all.

"Thanks, Sage".

I took out my phone and stepped outside to make an important phone call.
