Chapter 13: The Consequences of an Unruly Child

Heng and I talked awhile that night. I told him every little hell that Scott had put me through. He sat there patiently yet horrified as the details came out. At times his anger shined through his normal calm. His eyes were sad as he watched me tell my story. After everything was out on the table, he kind of just sat there processing. He told me to go rest and that he would handle whatever the adoption process would need and that he would be back in a few days. Heng left leaving me feeling even more hopeful for my future. I walked in almost a sleep-like bliss back towards the dorms. My feet seemingly stopped themselves as I felt a presence. A group of students stood in my way; small fries compared to me.

"Look boys the prodigy has shown his face once again. What should we do with such a show-off?" One boy looked as if he led the fools before me.

"A dog will bite if trained to do so, seems that's all you were trained to do." I looked at the group confidently.

The group glared at me. They were tensed up looking for a fight.

"If you want to fight just show up to the arena tomorrow, I don't fight outside it," I replied already bored.

The group laughed loudly as they began circling, like sharks smelling blood from a fresh kill. I played them no mind and tried to keep walking. Each boy took his turn trying to strike me, each blow being deflected or redirected by me. More of an annoyance really as they tried to hinder my movement. One wrapped themselves around my torso grabbing me by the neck.

"Ok, now you're going too far," I growled grabbing the boy and ripping him off me.

His throat now in my hands, I slammed his body into the concrete walkway a few times and tossed his then limp body aside. I shook my hands getting the blood out of them as I glared at the now retreating group.

"The arena isn't for my safety but yours. out here I show no control. Your life outside of the arena isn't promised." I took a step forward they took one backward.

"We are sorry Shen's dad got us to do this. He is extremely upset that you killed him. He wants your head." The group behind the leading boy cowered as I stepped towards them again.

I attacked, being more than provoked I pummeled the overwhelmed boys into the dirt. I however left them alive for them to be a warning. I was not one to back away. I made my way to the dorms. At the entrance, I saw Molly struggling with an older gentleman. I could hear her arguing with the man as she kept pushing him away from the dorm's doors. The man was agitated and was trying desperately to get into the dorm.

"Is there a problem here Molly?" I asked once I was in earshot.

"Shit it just had to be you who showed up here when he was here." She grumbled as the angry man turned his attention to me.

"Mind your business boy unless your Jason then your business is with me!" He growled taking a step towards me.

Molly looked at me with tired eyes begging me not to. I mouthed I'm sorry to her as I took another step forward rolling my sleeves up.

"Damn it you little shit." She yelled as she ran towards the administration building.

The man looked back at her as she ran checking her out.

"Hey pervert, you got a problem with me or what? I don't have all night." I yelled at him.

"I am Leng Shen, and you killed my son!" the man's face turned a dark red as he approached me.

"Your son was an unruly child who tried to kill me for whatever stupid reason. Now, look at you, just as pathetic. Can't even handle your own business, sending children to carry your anger." I replied taking another step towards the man.

I showed no fear against the opponent before me, that part of my life had died. I stood chest to chest with Leng Shen with the confidence I never had before. He glared at me before charging me. His speed was just under Vicky, bad for him though that I had just broken through since that fight. I could see his movements. Each attack was blocked from both sides. an unending back and forth. The man tried to use dirty tactics like throwing sand into my eyes. My footing slipped just as he was about to make a killing blow forcing him to overshoot it. He tripped and landed on his face. I capitalized on it and had the man by the throat. His feet lifted off the ground as he launched punches into my face. It was too late; he was in my grasp. I slammed his face into the metal light post, then the ground as Leng tried desperately to defend himself. His efforts grew weaker with each slam until a yell forced me to drop the now battered man.

"Holy cow," Molly exclaimed at the sight of absolute devastation.

Standing next to Molly was a weathered old man. In his hands was a large wood walking stick. His grey beard almost touched the ground. Despite his old age, he stood straight and with an unfathomable presence. The pressure alone was almost enough to drive me to my knees.

"Child why do you do such things?" He asked in a gentle quiet voice.

"His son fell in the arena by my hand, so he sent others to deal with me and even came to where I live to bother me. I was just protecting myself, sir." I replied with a low bow.

He looked at me and then at Molly who nodded. The old man sighed as he walked over to Leng Shen.

"Mr. Leng, do we need to have a conversation about leaving gifted students alone?" The sudden change in the man's voice forced all of us to our knees.

Leng began stammering trying to cover his butt. However, the old man wasn't having it. He raised on hand and a loud crack as he slapped Jeng Shen across the face. He fell silent as the old man snapped his fingers. Several black robbed individuals suddenly appeared and grabbed Leng Shen dragging him off. The old man turned to me and looked me up and down.

"Tomorrow come see me, child." He said walking away.
