Chapter 37: 37. The prettiest girl

"Oh...Right. I didn't mean to bring him up. But if this guy is more handsome than Connor then I'd really love to see him." Miriam said in a bit to tease Jane but she was way over the moon by what she said.

"Oh dear. You should see him. I'm dying here just to have a glimpse of him already."

"And when did you say you will be going?"

"I don't know yet." Janet said and Miriam's eyes widened. She didnt know yet and she was already preparing? "Well, mom and dad told me to prepare against tomorrow, that they'll be talking to the guy's parents again to confirm and get back to me by the end of the day. So I'm getting prepared for, you know, anything." There was a brief pause. "And they may take me to see his parents." Janet's concluded and picked up another dress. She put it in front of her and turn to the mirror with an excited look. She twirled a bit and giggled. Her excitement was all over the place and Miriam just looked at her, quite surprised.

"Strange." She muttered under her breath and stood up from the bed, heading towards the door. "I'll be making breakfast."

"You are such a sweetheart." Janet said and blew her a kiss. Miriam weirdly looked at her and shrugged. She headed straight to the kitchen and rubbed her palms together.

She had spent quite some time in Janet's room, so she had less time at hand. She had to make something simple. But the cook in her didn't allow her to make something just simple. It should be nutritious too. So she quickly made spicy beef hokkien noodles with lots of veggies. She left the food in the warmer and quickly went to her room to freshen up and got ready for work. She was really committed to being on time. After about an hour, she came back and served herself. She poured herself a glass of milk and dug into her meal. She finished in 30 minutes time and it was around 8:30 when she was done. She had to get going before she was late.

She went to bade Janet goodbye and got a taxi. She was lucky the restaurant was about a 25-minute drive from their apartment. And because it was weekend, there was no traffic on the road.

Soon, she got in and greeted her other colleagues who had already reported. She made her way into her private restroom and quickly changed into her uniform. She went to log in for the day and soon, work began.

The day seemed to be moving fast, and soon enough, it was lunch break. Miriam was back in her private restroom and was stretching her limps on the small bed. She took out her phone to pass the time with some games and that was when she saw some missed calls and a message from a doctor friend. She usually put her phone on either silence or vibration when she was in the kitchen.

'I saw your dad this morning at my hospital. I wanted to talk to him but he told me he was in a hurry. I hope he's okay.' - Roland.

Miriam frowned. Her dad in the hospital? Why would he go to the hospital? Was he sick? Or maybe he went to look for someone? She kept asking herself so many questions. She read the message again, and she was contemplating whether to call her dad or call Roland for more information about it. After much contemplation, she decided to call Roland first. Right after the first ring, the call got connected.

"Hi beautiful." Roland's baritone voice came in, and Miriam rolled her eyes but smiled anyway. 'This guy is just too flirty.' She thought.

"Hey, Dr Leal." She replied with a teasing tone and she heard a faint sigh over the phone. She knew he hated it when she addressed him formally.

"What do I do with you, Mimie?"

"Do you want to do anything without me?"

"Well, I don't think I can do anything without you."

"Good. Then don't."

"Really."

"Of course."

"Then, will you marry me?"

"Roland!!"

"That's more like it. Call me Dr. Leal again and I'll make you my wife."

"Tsk! Such a bully! Aren't you a doctor?"

"Are you my patient?"

"Enough, Roland. I didn't call you for this banter." Miriam finally gave up and Roland's laughter was heard.

"Alright. It's been a while, though. I miss your sweet voice."

"You're being corny, Roland."

"What to do? I'm talking to the prettiest girl in the.."

"Oh my God, Roland!!" Miriam snapped and Roland laughed. He was flirty in nature and Miriam was aware of that but she couldn't help it. The more reason she couldn't accept being in a relationship with him. She didn't like flirty guys.

"Okay okay. Chill. I'm just being honest."

"How's work?" She swiftly changed the topic. Roland noticed but he didn't say anything and just replied.

"It's been good. Quite tiring as always. How about you?"

"It's been cool here." Miriam replied. "So what were you saying? You saw my dad today?"

"Yeah, about that. He was coming from the CT scan area and I had just stepped about after some rounds. I stopped him and greeted. I'm sure he knew I was going to ask about his visit so he quickly came up with an excuse that he was meeting someone and he had to leave. So I let him go. I had wanted to go to the scan area to ask about him but I decided to contact you first. Is he okay? He looked rather pail to me."

"He collapsed some time ago, I think that was about a week ago, and he told me he overworked and collapsed out of exhaustion. We wanted to take him to the hospital but he decides against it, insisting that he would be fine after some days of rest. I didn't really think much about it after that. Do you think something might be wrong with him?" Miriam asked after she explained.

"Honestly, I can't really tell. It could be exhaustion like he said, but there could be more to it. I'll go ask about him from the sonographers."

"Thank you so much, Roland."

"Don't mention, beautiful. But you should have called me when he collapsed."

"I wasn't t there! He collapsed at work and he was brought home. Mom was the one who called me and I rushed back home."

"You could have still called after that."

"Sigh. You're right. Honestly, I thought of calling you later but I forgot about it."

"Don't worry, I'll get back to you if I find anything."

"Alright. Thanks once again."

"Um, do you have time tomorrow? We could hang out a bit. I really miss you, honestly."

"Roland, you know I'm always..."

"I know you don't go to work on Sundays. Come on, I miss you and it's just a casual outing. Or do you want a real date?"

"Okay I'm not going anywhere with you!"

"Hey, hey, you know I was just kidding! So what do you say? Dinner, lunch?"

"Okay okay. I'll let you know if I'll be free."

"Oh come on, you already know if you'll be free or not. Just say yes, Mimie. It's been a while. Don't you miss me?"

"No!" Miriam said almost immediately.

"Ouch! That hurts." Roland exaggeratingly said and chuckled. "But I miss you so much and I want us to meet. Please don't turn me down."

Miriam signed. She was sure this guy would go any length to convince her into going out with him. But she wanted a simple life, and she was sure Roland couldn't give her that. He wasn't really from a rich family, but he was very hardworking and passion-driven that he had been able to make a huge name for himself as one of the best doctors in their country. He had managed to open about 3 of his hospital branch in 3 of the prominent cities in their country. He was considered rich, and Miriam had come to understand that rich people had their own problems. She didn't want to add up to his worries. But this guy just kept on pursuing her even after she made it known to him that she wanted nothing more than a friend.

Coupled with the fact that he was a doctor who probably saw different ladies every single day. He was handsome in his own unique way, and she was sure ladies would be all over him, and she wasn't sure she could take a chance. She was sure her fragile heart wouldn't be able to stand a heartbreak, nor would she be able to fight with other girls over a guy. She was afraid this flirty nature of his and his handsome face would cause her nothing but trouble, although he was not as handsome as Maxwell, her new friend.

Wait, why was she now comparing?

Shaking her head, a helpless sigh left her lips.

"Okay, lunch tomorrow."

"Great!!" Roland beamed. "I'll pick you up at 12pm."

"Yeah, okay. Have a great day, Roland."

"Same there, beautiful."

"My name is Miriam."

"And you're beautiful."

"Just....bye." Roland's laughter was heard across the phone before Miriam ended the call.
