Chapter 2: Jean Thoby

MORGAN FREEMAN narrates

August 2006

Being their only child, she inherits their teeming fortune. Expectantly, April grows up developing looks that rival a goddess. She is this gorgeous, well-mannered, cultured, mixed-heritage, smart, mysterious and somewhat reserved young girl who loves Beethoven classical music. Regretfully, she adopts ultra-peculiar behavior among her peers at Jean-Thoby's privately owned but religiously affiliated school.

For instance, she is seldom absent from school on her special day. If it falls on a school day. She'd rather accept rainchecks on gifts and surprise birthday parties than celebrate her naissance with her caring friends. As her nativity day approached, April would always look lethargic, nostalgic and dreadful.

Since her procreators' greatly charred demise, people felt it was more than normal for April to behave in this manner because her parents were starched on her natal day.

But it would never cross anyone's minds that April was the recipient of such pure atrocities inflicted by none other than her cult-crazed parents on every single birthday she has ever had while they were alive.

Except for her reclusion on the anniversary of her birth, April appeared to be one of the most broadly attuned teenagers in her hometown, which can make it very difficult for anyone to believe that she had such a dark predisposition.

April finds solace in reading about the dark arts after her parents' death. Although she becomes 'mildly' bipolar due to the Miguels' mistreatment of her. She successfully hides her condition from everyone.

Every birthday she has had post her parenticide is spent in the confines of her room with candles lit and a book of spells in front of her to appease her grief and her paranoia of April Fool's Day. She thinks if she can control what happens to her on that day, then all will be well as the dark side to her desperately clashes to come out and play. She casts spells after spells on herself to stay subdued.

She surreptitiously held onto those hauntingly sinister memories of her thirteenth birthday when her progenitors, for the thirteenth time, were about to pull yet another trauma-induced prank at her expense in their dome of doom.

April

Jean Thoby, I sweetly nicknamed JT, is a dream. It is everything and more that I have ever visualized when I thought of being able to attend school like every school age kids. Making friends in JT is easy for me. I knew how to get anyone to like me. All the friends I make have to be useful.

I had an oddly curated circle of friends within days of attending JT. Felix Ruiz the gay friend, Richard Johns the jock, Geraldine Rockwell the beautiful cheerleader, Mitch Jackson the clown and Mike. We all easily vibed from day one, it felt destined to them, but it took work on my part.

Like clockwork Felix was being bullied once again, by Richard who was built like a wall with a fuck me hard face, Richard the dick they used to call him, in the cafeteria. Unfortunately for Dick, the newest, prettiest girl in school had zero tolerance for bullies. JT had a new queen on campus, and they were going to remember her name.

"At the center of your being you have the answer; you know who you are, and you know what you want." She quoted Lao Tzu to Richard.

You know that harassing and hurting Felix, here, today, will not make any of the badass looking mean girls wet their panties for you. It did not work before, and it will never work. You might get your dick suck and wet, but no one would be wet for you. Are you doing it for attention that you are not getting from home? I will strike a bargain with you; I will give you the attention you seek. You are so handsome; do you know that? I lick my mouth, blow kisses his way and continues my verbal dissertation on love/hate relationship.

Felix is gay, hooptie doooh, your fixation on Felix only means one thing. That you are strangely attracted to him. If you do not want to show him love. Stay away from him, and I am speaking to all of you who think this school is your BDSM playground to get off on your dominance. There is a spot, you can go to, discreetly. La Boheme. I will DM you all the address after this.

Live and let live. We are all important with air in our lungs but worthless once we stop breathing which can be anytime. Let's make the most of our time now and be happy! I guarantee you all, I know what pain is. Let's choose no pain instead.

Richard is vexed and wants to save face. "I don't hurt girls, but I know someone who will. Who are you anyway?" He did not care for an answer.

Without missing a beat, he incites Cyna, one of the mean girls to attack April unsuccessfully. After which, they all learn of her martial arts skills, and they also learn better not to cross April verbally or physically.

"BTW, my name is April," she affirms confidently.

April walks across the cafeteria from her table like she was walking the runway and sits with Felix who was eating alone. Geraldine and Mitch joined them at the table too, "April, right?" they started. "I am Mitch, and this is Geraldine, you are amazing."

Richard approaches their table, apologizes to both Felix and April and waited, feeling a tad confused. "You can sit down." April scoffed finally while pulling out the chair next to her for him.

The cafeteria was on their feet and chanting her name, "April, April, April".

Mike was swimming laps when he heard words of the commotion at the cafeteria. He knew April through and through. He knew this tactic and April was the change this school needed. He quietly smiled to himself, "my April". He knew she could handle her own in a cafeteria full of kids as she was made to endure much worse. She was resilient.

On her very first day in school, she changed the culture and climate of JT. She had a stand ovation at the end of her verbal sparring with all the cliques in the cafeteria that thought they could prey on weaker students. She gave them food for thought while philosophizing and preaching in the words of Lao Tzu. She looked like a girl no one wanted to go against. She was assertive, wickedly smart, scandalously and unapologetically magnificent. She was 100% April!

April

My absolute favorite thing about JT is going to class, English lit, History, Math, Social Studies, Health, PE, any class really. Seeing a different teacher for every class. Something I didn't get the leisure to experience when my parents had me homeschooled.

From 0830 to 1500 daily, Monday to Friday, I am dedicated to JT, the teachers, my schoolwork, the school activities, and being an active member of the student body. I had a knack for overachieving, but I also made time for friends and everything else on the curriculum. Debate club, chess club, drama club, student government, martial arts, and after school projects.

With my Mary jane shoes, white knee-high socks, pleated plaid skirt, a white blouse and blue sweater with the emblem of the Jean Thoby Catholic School over every article of garment, I rocked it. I stylized my uniform by getting the skirt way shorter than it needed to be, to show off my toned long legs, and left my blouse with two buttons unfastened to reveal some cleavage, but I never failed to wear that uniform. My way of showing my brand of respect to the institution that I had to kill to become a member.

Senior Year is the experimentation year as they say. I decided to be in a sexual, no strings attached relationship with the English teacher. Mr. Patrick Feinst. He was a tall glass of mineral water after a long day of fencing and Krav Maga practice.

Yeah, I'm a bad girl...duh!

Midway through my senior year, Mr. Feinst went missing. He never returned to teach English again. It was supposed to be a secret. A dirty secret. No one else knew of the affair, as far as I was concerned. My friends served their purpose, they scratched a particular itch, but Professor Feinst was the greatest, he kept me sated.

Mike and April have that brotherly-sisterly love or maybe something more as they are extremely devoted and loyal to each other, no matter what. Mike secretly pined for her to fall for him, but his parents were always in the way. They graduated from Jean-Thoby's private school together. April was of course, the valedictorian. And now, they are both accepted at the same university in the Big Apple.
