Chapter 53: Please be gentle

[3rd Person Pov]

"How can you be so useless! We have lost almost an entire week's worth of money from the nobles from the Kobold Cave now! And the only thing you can tell me is that you don't know?!"

"I'm sorry Mr. Bat! We truly don't know how someone got passed the guards and the mana sensors!"

The guild master of the bat was furious. Furious because someone had been hunting in the Kobold Cave without their permission, leaving the monsters unable to recover in time for when the nobles sent in their kid with a group of lower-ranked hunters in order to gain real-life combat experience.

"Fuck! And we still don't have a hunter at [D]-rank of lower that could dive into the dungeon at night to see what's happening, I guess?!"

Bowing his head, the bandana-wearing man still didn't have any good news to give Mr. Bat, "I'm sorry! No one is available for use until tomorrow! But couldn't we try and send in a [C] rank to kill the intruder?"

Mr. Bat, who was already furious, somehow managed to get even angrier at his idiot of a subordinate, "Are you stupid?! And risk altering its mana signature and making it evolve? Just to catch a fly that somehow flies through your hands as if you were paralyzed?! No! Gather more members and guard that portal, damnit!"

Nodding his head, his subordinate quickly scurried away, letting the leather jacket-wearing Mr. Bat look out of the window of the skyscraper he owned, looking down at the houses of Essen. Little did he know that the rat he was looking for wasn't hiding in any of them anymore, having already flown away with his small, black wings.

[James's Pov]

*Thud*

'Finally, I'm back...'

Letting my weary body fall into my bed, I was finally home from the hell I created for myself, allowing my thoughts to think back at the week I just experienced.

The first two days, I couldn't remember. However, from Thursday onwards, I knew that there had been a change in me. No longer did I have any problems fighting the rats, and I could even, to some extent, enjoy the fights. The most interesting one had been when I challenged the Kobold King, the boss of the mine.

He had been even fatter and larger than the other monsters, wielding a large spade instead of a pickaxe. The boss had even been able to use two different skills, [Charge] and [Power Strike], which I knew very well from the game. Luckily, they acted just like in the game as well, with both of them doing exactly as the names suggest.

In the end, my three bodies overwhelmed the fat rat completely, shredding his body into pieces with our three scythes, making him drop a ring that could be useful in the future.

Toying with my enemies by using my mist, using my scythe to overwhelm them with a dance of slashes, and bullying them by ganging up on them was pretty fun. Also, the dungeon itself had planted a very interesting seed in my mind that I needed to experiment with. Thus, I had already decided to use the next weekend to go on another little trip.

'I actually look forward to class tomorrow...'

It still felt a bit scary to be around other people, but it felt like a heavy weight had been lifted from my shoulders, now making me able to at least look forward to getting guidance from my experienced teachers.

Tomorrow, I would also talk with Ms. Turner, to get to know what she wanted to talk with me about. All in all, it would hopefully be a good day, my mind going as far as to hope for the first truly good day since I arrived in this world.

As my body fell asleep, I was unable to notice the liquid that was slowly making the sides of my face wet.

==========

Monday arrived, the sky covered by clouds and the winds whistling. Though Mensch appeared to have a static climate, always pretty warm but still refreshing, the weather wasn't following the same set of rules.

Having left sub-me at home, experimenting a bit with mana as a concept, I was walking through the grounds with a heavy heart. I had been overconfident. Seeing the students around me, which wasn't all too many as there were only 48 students in the entire academy, triggered my anxiety more than I had hoped.

Entering the freshmen building, it didn't take long until my focused powerwalk was interrupted by the voice of an overly cheerful guy. "Hey! James, you're back!"

Seeing him quickly sprint in my direction, my body automatically tensed a bit, as I was afraid that he might actually go so far as to give me a hug. Thankfully, that didn't happen as he stopped in front of me like a good boy.

"What have you been up to, man? We were all worried, Adriana even went as far as to suggest you might not be coming back. She said it as a joke, but it still made me a bit worried..."

'Is he giving me this information on purpose?"

Taking a quick scan of the golden boy, it felt like there might be a very slim chance that he, indeed, purposely told me that Adriana had taken the chance while I was gone to 'infiltrate' the group in order to gain information. But his stupidly glowing face didn't let me assume he did, instead, I just made a quick mental note, reminding me that Arthur might not be as simple as he seems.

Straightening my back, which had cowered a bit to prepare if he would have tried to jump me in so he could lick my face, I put on my practiced polite smile, "Of course I would come back. There was just a little situation that I had to fix, and now that that is done, I won't have to leave as I did anymore."

"Then, do you want to hang out tonight? The others were talking about maybe going out for some food at that academy restaurant we visited before. Mike doesn't even want to go close to Sophie anymore so we will probably get to eat in peace this time! Hahaha!"

Feeling endorphins rushing through my body, I could once again politely refuse someone asking if I wanted to hang out, "Sorry, but I have something to do. Maybe next time."

'Ahhh...'

His face turned into a bit of a pout, something I didn't find especially cute as he wasn't exactly my type. There was something between his legs that I didn't find particularly attractive.

It didn't take long until we went our separate ways, going to our respective classrooms for the weekly homeroom session. Walking into the room, I was met by all my classmates already sitting at their desks, unfortunately making it so I had no other choice but to sit right behind the huge girl, whose head covered a lot of my sight. Sophie somehow didn't react at all as I entered the room, her face trying its best to stay neutral.

With everyone staring, I had to distract my mind by playing a game of ostrich; If I can't see them, maybe they can't see me. However, the feeling of their piercing eyes quickly made my game out to be not as fun as I wanted it to be.

Following me, Mr. Brown also entered the room, gave me a quick manly nod, and started class, "Now, your fourth week at the academy has begun. I want to get a quick...."

And so the useless talk about nothing important started, making my head fly to another world until we were done.

"... so that's all you need to know before we go on our first dungeon dive. Even though some of you might have already experienced it, we will still be using our artificial dungeon so we can follow you and help you if needed. Class dismissed."

'A dungeon dive? Maybe I should have listened a bit. Eh, I guess I'll just ask Sophie about it later or something.'

As everyone rose from their seats and began leaving the classroom, me included, it didn't take long for the girl who had tried to ignore me to falter, stopping me by using her big body as an obstruction, "What were you up to? Please don't tell me you did something weird again..."

Having already established that the pink-haired dragon woman did regard me as a friend, or at least something akin to a friend, a tinge of guilt emerged inside of me. It was honestly pretty mean of me to just leave without telling anyone except for Mr. Brown, who I assumed kept everything we had talked about a secret as 'men would do'.

In the end, I decided that I could at least tell her that I visited a dungeon, leaving out all the other unnecessary information, however, this was not the place for such a discussion. "I'll tell you tonight if you want to know. However, I have some things I have to do after the school day ends, so it would have to be later at night."

Putting her hands on her hips, further accentuating her hourglass figure, she let out a deep sigh, "Haaa... Fine. I guess I have to come over as you probably don't want to leave that cave of yours. I'll send a text so you can prepare some tea."

Not wanting her to get the last laugh, I started to make my body squirm while at the same time putting a finger on my lips, "Oh... Of course, I'll make myself ready for your visit. Please be gentle..."

"You fucking goblin!"
