Chapter 2: Collision

Adam

It was always a shock for his senses every time Adam would shift to earth.

Shift is what it's called when demons would move from Brim (or what humans know as the underworld) to a new plane like earth.

He was suddenly so aware of all the noise humans make coming from the peace and quiet of his apartment in Brim.

From the horns of their cars to their high pitched voices, Adam was already severely annoyed. This is why demons and humans don't mix well together, he thought.

Demons couldn't be seen by humans until they died, or unless they wanted the humans to see them, so he walked past the busy people going about their regular lives around him, going unnoticed.

He was early for his assignment's death, just in time to see how it was going to happen.

"Crushed by collision with a 10 wheeler truck" was written in the folder he received that morning. This wasn't anything special.

He'd received assignments in the past that had died through far stranger events.

He was a little relieved to receive a calmer and less extraordinary death. Maybe this assignment would be easy, he thought to himself.

He didn't know much about his assignments, he preferred that they didn't put details as to what his assignments did to deserve to be brought to Brim.

He may be what humans called a demon, but he wasn't evil nor did he appreciate any human actions that were evil either.

He was always bothered by humans. Always disgusted with how they treated each other and Earth, the plane they lived in.

Humans had created these images of his kind being these terrifying creatures that tortured humans after death, when in reality they were nothing like that. HE was nothing like that.

He wondered to himself where humans got that image of them in their heads and why they chose to believe that, when he saw daily that humans could be even more terrifying.

He slowly walked towards the intersection before it would happen, and then he saw her.

She had her eyebrows knitted together as if she was concerned about something, and her short brown hair was all over the place. But it was her eyes that got Adam's attention.

He couldn't tell from where he was standing what color they were exactly, but he couldn't help but be drawn to them and stare.

He shifted into the passenger seat of her car to get a closer look, "What terrible thing did you do in this life to summon me?" he whispered as he looked at her.

She didn't look like she was aware of anything else going on, as if she was just stuck in her own mind, in a world of her own. She let out a deep sigh.

She was physically there, driving her car, but her mind seemed to be thinking of something else entirely. He stared at her face for a little while longer. Then he saw the truck.

Adam suddenly had a foreign feeling inside of him, something he couldn't describe or understand, and then he did something demons have never been known to do. Something he never thought he would do.

He hit the brakes on the truck that she was about to collide with and saved her life.

Eloise

Eloise slammed on the brakes.

She didn't scream, she didn't blink, she couldn't even breathe.

She was so busy thinking about her plain existence, that she forgot to check her surroundings before driving along the intersection as a truck was about to hit her car by the driver's side.

Yet by some miracle the truch had stopped, she was fine.

"What the hell???" She finally breathed. She looked at her hands and noticed they were shaking, she took them off the steering wheel and took a deep breath.

"Okay Eloise, breathe in, breathe out. You're fine, you're fine" She whispered to herself.

She slowly got out of the car to apologize to the truck driver since it was her fault, but as she walked towards the truck, it started to drive off.

"That's weird," She said to no one in particular "I would've thought he'd be mad."

People had started to crowd to see what had happened, so many eyes were staring at her, she had left her car in the middle of the intersection and it was starting to cause traffic.

"Not exactly how I wanted to be seen." She whispered under her breath.

She hurriedly walked back to her car and drove off to the university.

Her university wasn't far off anymore but it felt like the longest drive of her life because not only was she driving slow to be extremely careful, her hands were still shaking as she gripped the steering wheel.

After finally parking her car outside the building where her first class was, she turned her car's engine off and sunk into the driver's seat.

She let out a shaky breath and tried to calm herself down.

"I can't believe that just happened. How can I be so reckless," she said to herself "I almost died, pretty sure I should have."

She looked at her reflection through the rearview mirror and she saw that she was pale and her hair was a mess.

She tried to straighten herself up, looked back up at herself in the mirror and said out loud, thinking she was alone in her car "God must've given me a second chance."

"Well I wouldn't say it was God." A deep voice to her right said.

She jumped back in her seat and screamed.

A man that looked to be in his 20s was suddenly sitting next to her in her passenger seat.

He was dressed in all black clothes that looked expensive, and had slick black hair. He was smirking and staring at her.

She immediately noticed his eyes were so deeply black. She had never seen eyes that black it shocked her to see them and jumped back again.

He let out a short laugh, "Hi, I'm Adam."
