Chapter 3: Three
Rae P.O.V
The suit and tie walks out of the café and the old man sits down smiling at me.
"Haven't seen you smile in three months, I'm glad that girl came over, I love to see you happy." The old man compliments me way too much I always get tongue tied or so anxious I can't breath.
I get out of my chair and go to the back. I hate it when he does that.
I didn't smile because I didn't want to, not smiling doesn't mean I'm not happy.
"And what did I say about you using your powers so carelessly Raena? Do have any intention of listening to me?" He says from the other room upset.
"No, you're an old man who's going to die soon and I'll be back in the streets again. I have no intention of listening to you because I'll be back to doing what I was doing when you found me. I am still grateful you saved my life, that's the only reason I'm sticking around till you kick the bucket."
The old man found me at the back of a building beaten half way to death by a group of thugs who had come to buy a laptop from me. Turns out they didn't really want the laptop but the source and that complicated things.
My power is that source. I can wish for anything I have seen and touched before. I wish for the original or I can wish for a doppelganger of the item.
I don't need to know much about it, if I see it and touch it I can have it. Doesn't work on people though, but that would be useless, what can I do with people anyway.
They beat me up for information on who I work for, couldn't tell them I work alone so I feigned ignorance and said I am just a delivery girl. That story will never change, they beat me black and blue till they gave up and I still didn't change my story.
The old man here, Ren Suzuki, patched me up, so I told him the truth, plus, he's an old man at deaths door, there's no loss if he takes the truth to the grave. No loss at all.
I sigh heavily and take a deep breath.
There I go again swimming towards the darkness, I decided I would be all sunshine and rainbows, why do I suddenly feel so different. It's like the girl I was earlier is gone.
I want her back. I need that, I just can't help but get gloomy thinking about the reality of my life. I'm a reject. This old man is the first person I've ever met who went the extra mile to take care of me and well, he doesn't have much time left.
I hate this.
I wipe a tear away when I suddenly start crying. I turn around and the old man smiles at me.
"I'm like you Raena. I can read peoples minds. I know how much it hurts you to know I might die, but listen kid, I take care of myself to make sure I stick around a little while longer." He says trying to cheer me up and I chuckle. It works, but he's lying.
Thing about this bag of bones is that he's 123 years old, still strong enough to walk around, doesn't piss his pants and smart as hell too, but his number is almost up no matter how hard he tries. I wish I could change that, but I can't.
"Hey, maybe you should find me a time changer, they can age me backwards. It would give you something to do." The old man suggests and I smile.
Sounds like a plan.
I give the old man, a year tops, so I have one year to find myself anybody with a quirk to keep him around.
"Tell you what old man, hang in there long enough and I'll do whatever the hell you ask."
"Deal,"
We shake on it. I really hope I can get this right. I don't want to lose him at all. I really don't.
