Chapter 2: Sylvia Rose

Sylvia Rose, born from the prestigious and powerful Rose family, was a prodigy at a young age and proclaimed to be a genius. Her cognitive abilities outmatched even awakened adults and she was the pride of the family.

However, this lasted only until she turned 7 years old, when the awakening ceremony took place. In fact, the normal age for awakening was 10 years old, however, due to various connections, her father was able to get ahold of an awakening crystal and rushed her awakening due to her inhuman intelligence.

Through the help of genius such as her, humanity was able to create an artifact that allowed children with potential to awaken forcibly, these were known as awakening crystals. Coming in various grades. Of course, the cheapest being the F rank awakening crystal that any middle class family could buy through just a little bit of saving up at the price of $1,000. Rising in price, the E rank awakening crystal was $10,000, D rank awakening crystal was $100,000, C rank is $1,000,000, B rank being $10,000,000 and finally A rank being $100,000,000 .

Each rank of awakening crystal gave various benefits when used, of course the F rank crystal having no such benefits and simply awakened the user, while the A rank crystal allowed for the user to grow their mana core faster and even went as far as boosting their Elemental Affinity.

Once awakened, a mana core is formed within the body and was a benchmark of strength, raising the rank of the mana core becomes increasing more difficult as one increases their level and also grants much more benefits as well, such as overall physique. Although the difference may not seem drastic. A B+ rank mana core couldn't dare face against an A- rank mana core before being wiped in mere seconds. The higher up you went the more drastic of a difference.

The benefits of raising your mana core came with the introduction of higher level skills and abilities. For example, a C rank mana core wouldn't be able to withstand the backlash if they had used an A rank skill and would most likely self destruct the mana core and instantly crippling the user. Another reason to have a higher mana core was money. Indeed, those with a higher mana core were more respected in various environments and also treated increasingly better. An unawaken civilian with more job experience and ability would end up neglected compared to an F rank awakened with nearly no experience at all. This was simply due to the prestige and status having an awakened in your business brought.

On the other hand there is Elemental Affinities that are also related to mana cores. Elemental Affinities are decided at birth and determined which area of expertise they would specialize in and were numerous in quantity, in fact, a total of 10,000 Elemental Affinities were documented and many more undiscovered. Of course there is an artificial way to increase the number of affinities such as potions however, the affinity obtained is completely random and on top of that it is only available to the most wealthy individuals and even then they have difficulty obtaining such an item.

This is simply due to the difficulty in concocting such a potion and on top of that the nearly unobtainable materials required that by themselves would go upwards to a billion dollars. This leads to only one Elemental Affinity Potion appearing every decade in the entire world. Bidding usually went upwards to 10 trillion dollars and many nations went bankrupt attempting to afford it and giving it to their respective talents.

Anyways, on April 12, 2187, marking Sylvia's 7th birthday, everything changed.

--

In a majestic and enormous white room slept a cute girl who peacefully slept in the queen sized bed with purple drapes that matched the color of her amethyst eyes. Sleeping in a fluttering night gown she slowly woke up to see the sunlight seeping through the curtains. As she was about to go open the curtains, the door opened and a brown haired blue eyed maid entered her room.

"Young lady, how many times have I told you to leave opening the curtains to me, just sit tight and we will do everything for you."

After saying so numerous other maids entered the room took off her nightgown and took Sylvia to the bathroom and washed her silky smooth skin and near divine hair. Afterwards they swiftly changed her into a purple dress that lacked frills, however, made her look much more mature.

In the first place she hadn't spoken a word as she normally does, even to her father she would only speak when needed and as so she ended up having a aura of nobility and elegance. On top of that her otherworldly face and her slightly chubby cheeks due to her age made her look like a doll and the maids enjoyed dressing her up. After they were finished with getting ready the maid with brown hair and blue eyes, Maia, began a one-sided conversation with Sylvia.

"Today is the young lady's 7th birthday and also the day when you awaken, how exciting."

The maid spoke to herself cheerfully smiling as she was used to these one-sided conversations. After all, she was Sylvia's assigned maid in the Rose Mansion so she was used to her young lady's muteness.

"After breakfast they will be awakening you, it may be a little painful but bear with it okay? Also I hope you get a lot of affinities, that would be good too."

As Maia was rambling to herself, Sylvia simply looked listless as she followed Maia to the dining room and zoned her out. After all, this child was multitudes smarter than Maia and didn't need this elementary explaining, in fact, she was so confident that she would do well today that she wasn't even nervous. After all her potential was already checked at birth and it was a whopping A+ rank potential, which was the highest the artifact could detect.

Finally, the duo reached the dining area where they separated as Maia went to do other chores and wait for her master to finish eating with her family. Leaving Sylvia in front of the door to the dining room.

Of course, Sylvia wasn't as excited to awaken as she was eating with her family. In fact, it was one of the things she hated most living in the Rose family mansion. On the other hand, the only thing she found enjoyable was reading the books in the expansive library and also where she spent most of her time.

Entering the dinning room she saw the figures of 4 individuals. Setting at the head of the table obviously being her father, also known as Adam Rose as he had a domineering aura with black hair and crimson eyes that could kill. The reason for the Rose Clan's success also came from Adam as he was also the guildmaster of one of the largest guilds in the rose being the Rose guild. After all he himself was an S rank awakened and one of the leading figures of humanity against the demons and beasts.

Sitting on his right was his wife, Elizabeth Nightbringer, she was the heir of the Nightbringer clan and had black hair and black eyes and although they weren't as prominent as the Rose clan, they still held quite an influence, and the marriage between Adam and Elizabeth wasn't out of love, in fact, it was a political marriage that was made through the decision of Adam's grandfather. Coincidentally, she was looking at Sylvia with contempt and disgust.

On his left was Sylvia's eldest brother, Roy Rose who looked to be in his mid 20s and shared the same traits as his father downing black hair and crimson eyes. He simply ignored the presence of Sylvia and continued eating.

Next to Elizabeth was Sylvia's eldest sister, Scarlet Rose who was in her early 20s and shared her mother's traits having black hair and black eyes. She was close to her brother as they had grown up together and looked at Sylvia with fury in her eyes.

Finally, there was Sylvia herself, not sharing any genetic traits with her family having silver hair and amethyst eyes, she stood out like a sore thumb. However, this is natural, of course, because she was adopted. She didn't share a single drop of blood with the people in front of her. Of course, nobody directly said it, however she wasn't an oblivious child to not realize the obvious.

The only reason she was able to live comfortably in a house filled with strangers was due to her overwhelming potential and her father's protection. In fact, the only reason why she was adopted in the first place was due to her overwhelming potential and without it she would most likely be rotting in the alleyways.

She swiftly moved and sat next to her older brother and proceeded to eat her breakfast, scrambled egg, butter on toast along with sausages, in silence. A heavy mood lingered as nobody spoke a word while the two women across from her kept giving her death stares.

Elizabeth held contempt due to her suddenly barging in on the family 7 years ago and she had yet to accept such a 'creature,' even if she was an out of the world talent. Scarlet on the other hand felt immense envy and was jealous at her overwhelming potential. She wasn't that stupid to not realize the obvious favoritism that her father gave her even when she didn't even belong here.

The silence was soon broken by the words of her father as he addressed her.

"Sylvia, today is the day of your awakening, I'm sure you wouldn't disappoint me, but, you know what happens if you do right?"

After these cold words the tension in the room deepened as the two women thought it was nearly impossible for someone to not have a successful awakening with that much potential.

Sylvia simply nodded her head and continued eating the food in front of her.

Noticing this blatant rudeness to her father Elizabeth found the opportunity to begrudgingly say along with an icy glare.

"Stop disrespecting your father, and speak child."

Sylvia simply looked back at Elizabeth with a tired look in her eyes as if she expected such an outcome. She sighed as she opened her mouth

...to eat another piece of sausage.

Elizabeth began fuming as her face was red in anger at the humiliating act of ignoring her words. She who held the second most authority in the house couldn't believe the audacity coming from a mere adopted child from the slums.

As she was about to lash out at her she noticed Adam's aura flaring as he looked at her warning her to not do anything rash. Elizabeth simply gulped at the meaning aura directed only at her as she meekly sank in her chair. She was but a mere B rank awakened and was suffocating under the pressure of Adam.

The rest of the dinner went by in silence as Elizabeth and Scarlet continued glaring at Sylvia while Roy simply ignored her existence all together.

Once Adam was finished with his breakfast he stood up, looked at Sylvia and briefly stated.

"Once your ready come to my office."

Sylvia didn't miss a beat as she simply stood up leaving her half finished breakfast on her plate. She would rather not finish breakfast than staying in this room any longer.

Adam looked at her unfinished plate and expected this to happen and uncaringly made his way to his office along with Sylvia.
