Chapter 11: The Surprise Test

Serpentine Noble Knight Academy.

Serpentine because she was racially a serpent.

Noble because she was the most noble and dignified person I have ever met.

Knight because she was a knight, a chivalrous one at that.

Her name was Sophia Eloise Silvermoon. Because of some unfortunate events she passed away, but at her dying breath she said

"I wanted to make a place where my people can live freely, an utopia for them."

Being her only disciple I did the best thing for her, I fulfilled her dying wish, I created an empire that is, I United all the kingdoms in this continent and named it the empire of Silvermoon, when that was done I throned her son as the emperor and gave all of her people nobility, or noble status.

That of course doesn't mean others who were not her people haven't gotten nobility but it's just that her people were the first batch of nobles the empire has seen.

But that was thousands of years ago. Just three centuries ago, if someone were to ask me if I like this arrangement or not then the answer would be…

I fucking hate it.

Three centuries ago, as if someone was attaching strings to people and controlling them, things started changing. In the next fifty years the entire political world started changing its routes, starting from our empire.

This was bad, not because someone was slowly gaining control over the world, but because it's someone whom I couldn't track,

I am the creator of purgatory, I decide who goes to hell, who goes to heaven, and who stays.

So anything that 'can' die, cannot hide from me, including people who were initially meant to die but then became strong enough to cheat death.

But I couldn't find that being and that means it is unkillable.

…That's Scary.

Anyways, to sum it up, there exists a being who I can't track and can't kill. That was dangerous, so I did the best thing I could think of. I created an isolated area so that the empire couldn't politically control me, because after all that unknown being might indirectly be pulling the strings.

And to get away from its control I created a fortress that will always remain in the shadows until that being itself shows up.

This academy is that fortress. Since its inception I have never stepped out of this room, but I always watch from the shadows…

And after a long time, I finally noticed someone acting very unusually.

A kid named Yin Orsolauv, he is the eldest son of the newest and the strongest Duke. Who is also the only person who I don't suspect to be involved with that being. So I have always had a little interest in the kid of someone like that but after a week of his arrival I noticed how unpredictable he is.

For instance, he is the first and only human in the world who does not have even a speck of mana or any kind of energy inside of him. That's ridiculous. It's strange but I have seen worse.

But then the really strange things started happening, on the first day of the second week someone lit him on fire, and…

He died, he died but he never really entered purgatory instead he resurrected himself. Maybe his father has engraved some sort of resurrection rune in his body, improbable considering his and his son's relationship but definitely not impossible.

Then he showed impressive healing. He healed from a fire attack of a descendent who had a contract with a phoenix. That's rare.

Then, during a class, he broke his leg. It happened so quickly that even I was surprised. It was just an ordinary injury but then why did I feel space time distortion?

Then, in the infirmary, he fell asleep from the outside. It may look like he fell unconscious but for trained eyes, like Agnes and mine, his body just suddenly relaxed, no one falls asleep that quick!

After observing him, I realized that we needed to talk, but after a little more observing that is.

Alas, the descendant of that phoenix contractor again attacked him, but looking at Yin boy's serious expression I knew he was sure he would die, that resurrection ability was probably a one time thing. So I had to save him.

Sigh

I guess I will talk to him right now…

But before that I should make a few lie detecting babies, he probably won't mind a little test, I guess.

______

"Lies…"

"I smell lies…"

"I hear lies…"

"I see lies…"

Suddenly small, cute, black winged toddlers materialized out of nowhere and randomly started whispering that…

Crap I am fucke-

"You're pretty daring, aren't you? Or should I say, suicidal?" The headmaster chuckled.

As he said that, his staff started glowing, and I thought I was dead..

But as the glow faded I realised I wasn't inside of the library anymore. I was sitting on a chair, inside of a world that was dyed in red.

Gigantic red hands were protruding out of the ground, and were joined together to form some sort of scary throne, and the old man was sitting on top of it, he had his hood covering his face now and his staff was gone.

"I guess this is a good place to talk, isn't it? Here those little lie detectors will not intervene us" He said, eye smiling.

"..."

I didn't say anything, what if he is lying, what if he still has those toddlers hiding somewhere, remaining silent is the best option.

"Don't be so stiff, we won't have a decent conversation if you are like that." He said, still with a smile in his eyes.

"..."

I still chose to remain silent, [Gamer's Mind] will never let me feel the typical emotions that I should feel right about now, so if I try to act like a scared teenager he will probably catch me red handed.

"Speak." He ordered, still maintaining his eye smile…

Except the previously calm atmosphere descended into an oppressive silence.

Sigh

"Pardon my boldness but how can I confirm that those toddlers are not here? And if you suddenly throw me in an intimidating place like this I can't help but get stiff." I sighed and said those words as casually as possible, as honestly as possible.

"Hmm, indeed, I haven't proved it to you. Well, I can not confirm that to you, you just have to take my word for that. By the way, this intimidating place is purgatory. When you die you come here, here I decide whether you will go to heaven or whether you will go to hell, you can also stay here and be my subordinate, if I am in a good mood then, sometimes, only sometimes I even bring people back to life."

He said in one breath, and then slowly his staff materialized and the floating, glowing dark star symbol started extending and soon it turned into a purple blade that hovered over the staff, it oddly ressembled a scythe.

"So don't you worry, I don't need those here." He finished in a very menacing tone.

"Understood,"

I said as calmly as possible. By saying he can resurrect people, just now, he tried to entice me.

"If I may,"

I said, now a little less tense.

"Go on, speak your will." He said,

"May I know why you have called me?" I said,

"You will know soon enough." He said, before turning his head to the side, disinterested in me.

"Understood, sir." I said.

"Don't you have anything to say to me?" He said, looking down from his hellish throne.

"I don't believe so," I said with clear eyes.

"Very well, let me rephrase, how are you alive after that fiery kid torched you?" He said in a flat voice.

"That…even I don't know."

I lied, if I got caught that's that, if not I can lie now.

"You're lying." He said in a calm tone.

"Do I have to answer?" I asked straightforwardly, I don't want to tell him that I am not from this world.

"If you don't, then I will just have to torture you until you do."

For the first in his face brightened and he grinned in amusement.

"I have trained my mind to not get overly emotional all the time for as long as I remember, so even if you torture me you probably won't get the reactions you are expecting."

This is both true and false. It's true that I have trained myself like that but that's back in my previous world and using different kinds of chemicals which basically messed with my mind, but in this body, and in this world that's not true.

Now the question is, will he catch on if it's a lie or will he not, or will the babies show up or not.

"Oho, then does that mean I can torture you as much as I like?"

He said, as he clenched his scythe in a strong grip.

"If you do that, then I will get a little endurance training out of it."

I said with a dry smile.

"Indeed."

He nodded to himself and continued

"So let's get straight to the point shall we? Let me ask first, why are you here?"

"I am here because you have summoned me here"

As I said that, I looked towards the ground and there for the first time I saw it..and followed up with,

"Is what I would like to say, but if I am being honest for a change, I knew you would eventually summon me."

Damn it, the old man lied. It's a good thing that I gave an answer that I can further fill up as I wish.

"I see it was all part of your scheme, huh."

He muttered something under his breath, his expression gave me the impression that he was thinking of something.

"So can you explain to me about how your plans worked out?"

This time the old man said in a somewhat friendly tone.

"It was nothing grand, it's just that I thought since there are not many guards here then that must mean there is someone really strong protecting everybody here, and considering the fact that you didn't protect me back then when Alfred first attacked me I realized then that must mean you don't care about insignificant ants, so I just did things that will make me a significant ant."

Though an ant nonetheless.

"I see, so what do you want from me?"

He said, as he softened his posture a bit.

"I wish to have your help and protection."

I said it, I said it in the least roundabout way.

"You're not worthy of it,"

He said with great disappointment, this is bad.

"And your time is up, I will only listen to you more if you tell me why you are not scared of me?"

He said in an unamused tone and a flat face.

"Simply because now I know it's not the end even after death, if I die I have three options as you have said it yourself."

"Isn't it foolish of you to think that I will not torture you or send you in some hell hole for eternal suffering and misery?"

"Pfft..! That was a good joke, sir."

I intentionally laughed out loud… let's see if you truly don't care about the well being of the commoners as the teachers or not. And as he frowned I continued.

"With all due respect, sir tell me will you get afraid of hell if you are already a resident of it? Your academy feels like I literally live in hell, do you really believe there is something more hellish than this? At least I don't."

I said, without a shred of emotion leaking from my face.

"Guess it was that painful for you."

He first stared behind my back for a bit, before his expression turned into an apologetic one…now I know what I have to do.

"Sir, seeing your sympathetic expression, could it be that all the things that happen to the children saddens you?" I said, with a pained expression.

"What are you getting at?"

He asked in his sagely voice, alright now we gamble.
