Chapter 29: Eventually

"Good morning, Queen," Rory purred. He dropped a steaming cup of hot cocoa, its scent making me want to puke the waffle I had on the way to work.

I rolled my eyes.

"Are you feeling better?"

Rory batted his eyes at me. He put a hand to his mouth, feigning a gasp before slapping my shoulders.

I scoffed, looking at him with an amused expression.

"You need not worry too much about me, my love."

"Ew," I made gagging noises and shooed him away. He was annoying so early in the morning.

Laughing to his heart's content, Rory left me be to drop his things at the back. He hummed an unfamiliar song.

While he was gone, the sound of the drone scouting the perimeter made me look at the sky. The stars weren't lying.

It seemed we'd be having great weather today. However, not everyone would enjoy it.

Should I feel sorry about that?

Rory slammed his hand on the desk, as I had expected. But he had no cutout of the piece he would have shared with me.

Perhaps the journalists were taking their time thinking of how to describe the recent events.

But the media didn't want to miss that opportunity to raise their viewers. The first medium to release the story will probably get the highest rating. But soon, more detailed and accurate footage would steal the crown.

I find it funny whenever I came across what they were saying about the target and then me. Mainly many critics were hitting the police and other institutions that promised to keep the city safe from people like me.

Well, not that they were wrong. But they should cut the authorities some slack. Some of them might be involved in some shady business, but it wasn't their fault that people my parents work with have an ongoing war not everyone knew about.

What happens within the community surrounding the mafia and other sects stays within that boundary. People who heard of it were immediately silenced if it got leaked out.

I clicked my tongue, suddenly annoyed, and Rory had nothing to do with it. But he better not cross me off. I might let him have a taste of what I was really like without the restraints.

"And she struck again," Rory mumbled excitedly. I rolled my eyes for the second time.

"Why did you call me, Queen? Do you need anything? Are you planning to leave me all alone in here again?"

"Aw," Rory cooed, putting his elbow on the desk and letting it hold his head. He looked at me, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. "You just look very radiant today. I think you forgot to spill some juicy details with me."

"No," I immediately shook my head, denying the claims he has yet to speak about. "That guy is not my boyfriend."

"Oh?" Rory narrowed his gaze, the smirk on his lips deepening as he leaned toward me. "A suitor then?"

I don't know how or where I should begin telling Rory about Jace.

I could easily escape his interrogation if I agreed to every assumption he would vocalize, confirming the theories he had in mind about the guy who kept on visiting.

But making Rory believe such lie would result in nothing good.

For one, he would want to know every single detail there was to know regarding Jace and how I met him.

I can't risk giving any information I didn't have. Providing alibis and the fake news would get me in more trouble than speaking the truth.

Secondly, Rory has a big mouth. He would spread the word about me seeing someone even to people who wouldn't even care what I did with my life.

Who would want an update about one of the librarians in the city library? Much to their knowledge, we were nothing but mere employees and had boring lives.

Between me and Rory, I had the most boring life one could imagine. I'm pretty much craving a different kind of adventure.

I'm so close to being nauseated by cocktails and parties hosted by the rich, clubs, and other VIP places.

Well, there were some thrilling parts but let's not talk about that. Most would think I'm related to psycho killers and find what I do fun and enjoyable.

Although, sometimes, I wish it would entertain me as it did to those who had lost their sanity.

The only satisfaction I think about whenever I am out to hunt is the thought of getting closer to my goal.

It would become more dangerous, and the world would keep getting smaller the nearer my enemies would be.

I should be scared.

I could fail and die in the end without getting what I wanted. But this was what Seven had been preparing me for.

Plus, I won't accept defeat. If the first try doesn't work, there is always the second, third, and infinity.

I won't stop unless I die.

Death doesn't scare me.

Eyeing Rory up and down, I had an idea how to turn things around.

Smirking, I followed her gesture, plopping my elbow on the desk and dropping my head on the waiting psalms.

Rory answered my smirk with a smirk of his own.

"Why do you want to know, Rory? Don't tell. You fell for him that fast?"

Rory tapped the desk, his expression mixing everything I hadn't imagined ever seeing on his face.

With his preppy and too cheerful personality, other than the usual wide grin and playful mirth on his face, it was rare to see him troubled, sad, and frowning.

But right now, that was the kind of mixed emotions he had on display.

"No," Rory replied calmly. I could only chuckle, ready to change the subject.

"What's your latest tea regarding your beloved assassin?"

Right on cue, Rory immediately dismissed his uncertainties and switched gears. He looked at me, his eyes lighting up for some reason.

"I know what you're doing, Ames. Believe me; it won't work. But I'll let you off the hook for now. Soon, the truth shall come out."

I mentally sighed, agreeing with Rory but keeping my thoughts unspoken.

"Indeed," I mumbled. "The truth would eventually come out.
