Chapter 2: Chapter 2
Sitting in a chair in the corridor wearing a black fedora and red coat he took a sip of his coffee from the paper cup he was holding. Thud! Someone had taken the open seat next to him.
"What's wrong kid?" Without looking he already knew who was in the seat next to him.
"Who are you?" Alice interrogated, "I told you already," the man replied not even sparing a glance. "You're not really an Inspector from the Authority are you," she said, "what makes you say that?"
"First, the fact that you came into my parents' ward with no prior notification beforehand," she stated.
"What can I say? It was a rush job, I just happened to already be on my way here before the notification could've been sent." he answered, "but it's already been twenty-four hours since you came and I've found no source of information that accompanies your arrival." Alice argued.
"Second, your appearance, your red coat, black clothing, unkempt look, and attitude are not up to the Authority Inspector uniform or color standard," she pointed out, "What can I say? personal style," he shrugged, "you're not expecting them to worry about everything we wear, are you?"
"That's true but there is no article of clothing on you that shows you're with the Authority, even an armband or a badge on you would cement your identity. Then again, there is that badge you flashed to me before but despite having that you're not wearing it. Unless of course, you can't risk getting caught." she said coldly.
The Authority is a nationwide organization that handles public affairs and focuses on maintaining peace so it's only natural for their staff to wear their symbol with pride as they're members of great importance.
"Oh," he said, amused, "And finally, third, your identity itself Mr. Wesson."
"What's wrong? You couldn't find a Wesson?" The man joked, Alice let out a small chuckle, "No, that's the problem I did find a couple of Investigators from the Authority with the name Wesson but none of them matches your particular profile," She glared at him and once again asked, "Who are you really? Mr. Wesson."
The atmosphere became deathly silent for a while until; "I must say I'm impressed little detective," the man praised breaking the silence, "but even with those reasons that's still not enough to accuse me, much more so with your lack of evidence. So be honest with me," the mood shifted as it felt like something heavy was pressing down on Alice. "Humor me even, there's a fourth reason isn't there? The real reason you started suspecting me."
"That-" Alice didn't answer or rather she couldn't was it because of the pressure? Or perhaps it was because she fears what'll happen when she says it.
Suddenly, the man shot up from his seat, "about time," he muttered excitedly as he began walking. "Wait, we're not finished," Alice called out as she followed after him.
They continued walking through the strangely empty corridor until, "Wait," the man said as he turned around to face Alice.
He suddenly placed his white silk gloved hand on her shoulder and the temperature around them drastically dropped.
"Scram kid, turn the other way, this is your last chance I won't stop you from following me but whatever happens next," he took one final glance and leaned in closer, "is not my responsibility," he whispered.
With that he turned around and continued walking down the corridor, Alice stood there stunned as multiple thoughts played throughout her mind, 'what does he mean? Not his responsibility? Last chance? Where's he going? Does it involve my parents?' thoughts continued playing until she came to a conclusion as she muttered;
"He's going to kill them."
