Chapter 7: The dissapointment

Ms Jane left after putting lily back to sleep so now it was just them..

"I can stay here tonight if you want"

'You have no right to say that you're nothing to them anymore'

Abby shook their head slowly..

"It's fine.. I just want to be alone"

'See? You useless piece of sh*t! now leave!' his mind never stopped cursing him..

"Will you be ok?"

Telling yourself that you'll be okay when you know that it's not true, is the cruellest lie one can tell themselves..

But humans love to lie, don't they?

Abby nodded "I'll be okay.. Don't worry.. It's late.. Go home"

Jake nodded as he grabbed his bag but something inside him still wanted him to stay just in case..

"Um.." he took out a piece of paper and pen from his bag and wrote down his number..

"Without hesitation, call me anytime.. I'll come" he said putting that piece of paper on the table in front of Abby..

He was about to head towards the door when he heard

"I thought you said that you don't care.."

'I thought you knew me well enough to know it was nothing but a lie..' he thought as it was something he couldn't say out loud..

"If it was someone else at your place right now, I'd do the same thing for them too" .. and he left..

On his way home, he kept thinking to himself..

After what Jake saw.. Something about it made a slight change in what he feels towards Abby..

He never hated or despised Abby for breaking the promise they made years ago.. For forgetting the beautiful time they had together.. For moving on..

It was just disappointment.. How could one forget such a part of their life..

But after what he saw today, may have changed the way he feels..

Did it really 'change' his feelings, or did it just remind him and made him realize how he truly feels inside..

The urge to protect them never left his mind..

What a foolish move it is to fall in love with someone..

He stopped by the police station to make sure that they won't let him go that easily..

He almost fell asleep when he heard a knock on his door..

It was his dad..

It was funny how his parents would ghost him until it was about the bills..

He saw his sister Iris standing behind his dad..

"Oh-" he remembered something and walked towards his desk opening his drawer and taking out a book..

... {Yesterday}

Usually, by the time he will wake up to leave for his work, his sister would either be asleep or having breakfast.. He had a 9-year age gap with his sister.. Iris was 17 in high school while Jake was 26..

As he was about to leave, he saw his sister who was ready to leave as well.. So the siblings decided to have a walk together..

"Going early today?"

Iris nodded..

"A sports event is coming up.. Gotta practice"

"Archery?" He asked knowing Iris loves archery as much as her older brother loves Art..

She chuckled "The only sports I'm good at"

"True"

Every brother loves teasing their baby sister.. Don't they?

"At least I do sports and I'm good at it! What sports are you good at huh!?"

"Making money?" He smirked..

Iris rolled her eyes at her stupid older brother "That's not even a sport" she mumbled which made jake chuckle at her baby sister's cuteness..

Jake loved his sister more than anyone else in the world.. He loved her since his mother told him he was going to have a baby sister..

He would rush home from school and play with his baby sister for hours till they both would get exhausted and fall asleep..

But as they both grew up and started having problems of their own, their bond slowly started fading but the love they both had for each other, never disappeared.. Even though they don't show it anymore, they both still deeply cared for each other..

Iris is the only family member who accepted Jake for who he was even though she was too young to understand.. She loved calling him her 'big brother' when she was young.. Their parents would try to stop her but she never listened to them.. Jake has always been her strong big brother..

He smiled to himself remembering the old days..

"Oh um" Iris took out a piece which had a name of a book written on it..

"I've checked every single bookstore in this area.. I can't find this one book.. Find it for me"

"Why not just order it online?" He asked..

"I need it urgently and it'll take them at least a week to deliver it so.. yeah"

Jake nodded putting that piece of paper back inside his pocket..

...

Jake grabbed that book and walked back towards his father, handing him that book..

He got confused seeing a confused expression on his father's face..

He looked at his sister and then back at his dad..

"You're not here for the book?"

"What happened to your face?" His father asked..

'Is he concerned about me- no why would he'

"I just..got into a little fight that's it.. it's nothing" he answered in the same blank tone as his father's..

"With who? Do you think it was worth it?"

"Some drunk guy.. He was trying to harass a co-worker" he said not caring to go into the details..

His father nodded..

What shocked Jake and caught him off guard was that suddenly his father put a hand on Jake's shoulder as if he was.. proud?

And then his father left leaving Jake all surprised..

' ... What the-..'

"What was that?"

He mouthed to his sister to which, she just shrugged not knowing what to say..

This unexpected action of the father left both siblings confused and surprised at the same time..
