Chapter 2: Tragedy Strikes

"I think your parents are dead," Marco said again. "I'm not sure and it's not entirely clear to me how everything happened"

"I don't understand".

"Wha... What...do you mean by my you think parents are dead?" She asked as her lips trembled as tears slowly rolled down her cheeks.

"TELL ME THE TRUTH, WHERE ARE MY MUM AND DAD?" Davina asked while firmly holding Marco's shirt as he stood up to explain the situation, pulling him back and forth with tears still rolling down her eyes.

Marco's P.O.V.

I went to the airport to pick up Davina, and down to the safe house just as her parents had authorized me to. I was told the precise time she would get to Italy and made sure to be available when she got there.

I followed my boss's orders and made sure she was safe before going to get her parents.

When I got to the Valentinos mansion, I noticed an unusual stillness accompanied by a dark aura. No one was at the gate, as guards always stood there to keep anyone who was not welcome to the mansion.

Visitors were granted an entrance only on appointments. I brought out my gun to be on the safe side to avoid surprises.

Entering the compound, I looked at the garden on the left and noticed a male foot lying on the floor. I quietly went towards the direction of the foot and saw that one of the guards had been shot in the head and was already dead.

I quietly and meticulously found my way to the mansion and the whole house was a disaster. Looked like there were fights. I could see holes made by gunshots on the wallpapers and curtains.

Right in the middle of the table, there were two glass cups with drinks in them. My boss would have been taking this so I taught.

I searched around the house and noticed that the nanny and cleaners were missing, and the guards were dead.

I turned to leave the house and it suddenly occurred to me that my boss was missing and quickly made way to my boss's bedroom hoping to see him but he was missing with his wife.

I immediately left the house in a different car to get Davina. I knew that the safe house was a secret to a few persons I'm not completely aware of, so I went into panic mode and thought it was best to leave the place.

Maybe I would be followed, I thought. As I couldn't conclude as to what had happened at the Valentinos mansion.

End of Marcos P.O.V.

After Marco explained everything to Davina, she tilted her head almost falling to the unclean floor when Marco speedingly caught her before she could reach the ground. She was heartbroken by the news that she fainted in his arms.

Marco prepared a safe place in a corner of the room for her to rest for the night as it was already dark before he could finish explaining to Davina.

The next day, at exactly 6 a.m. Davina screamed. Marco immediately rushed to where she was as he was already awake trying to wrap his head around the whole situation while seating on the floor close to the dirty door with his gun in his hand.

"Are you okay?" he asked.

"I just had a terrible nightmare about my parents, it wasn't clear but I think they are not fine". Davina said.

" It's okay, it must have been a reaction from yesterday. You know you passed out after telling you what happened at the mansion. We can't say for sure what had happened there, so let's not jump to ....." Marco said.

"I want to go to the mansion," Davina said, stopping Marco from completing his statement. "I want to go and see for myself all you have said, there might be something there to lead us to my parents".

"Davina, going back to the mansion isn't a great idea. There might be eyes on the mansion waiting for you. I think you should reach out to Uncle Luca. He knows the family so well and might tell who is behind this".

" NO" Davina shouted.

For a few seconds, she was silent.

She stood up from where she had laid the previous night and walked towards the window by the corner of the old house.

Marco immediately stood up as he was sitting by her side after she screamed from her sleep.

She stood by the window and silently watched the birds chirping and finally broke the silence.

"I can't run to Uncle Luca just yet. I need to try and find something. Anything at all that will be of help to me". Davina said.

She turned towards Marco with tears running through her eyes and said softly " I can't believe all this is happening. This is not the life I imagined I would get if I come back home"

Davina immediately rushed to hug Marco as she was already crying profusely. "I can't face this life without my parents. I've always longed for their physical affection and love ever since I left home".

Marco stood still all this while. He did not try to hug her in return. She was his boss's child and as such, his boss too, and couldn't do anything out of professional.

Davina immediately got a grip on herself and apologized for the discomfort she might have caused for hugging Marco.

" I'm sorry Marco. I crossed the line. Let's go to the mansion before I call uncle Luca". Davina said while grabbing her bag and walking towards the door.

Marco drove Davina back to the Valentino mansion as she had wanted. There was complete silence throughout the journey. No one said anything or did anything until they got to the mansion.

The cops had already been to the mansion the day before to investigate the crime scene as there was a crime scene barricade tape with DO NOT CROSS boldly written on it at the entrance gate of the mansion.

Marco and Davina immediately found their way through to the mansion.

The mansion was the same way Davina remembered it to be. Only a few changes were made.

As Davina stepped from the car her eyes were fixed on the large mansion she had known to be her home. The white coating of the paint shined as the sun beat down on it causing Davina to squint. Neatly decorated hedgerows surrounded the house.

As she walked towards the mansion through the walkway with flowers by its sides, she noticed that the playground she used to play on with her nanny and mum, had been turned into an exquisite garden.

She recalled telling her mum as a little girl that her playground would be turned into a beautiful garden when she becomes much older as she was so in love with nature.

"I miss mummy," she said speaking to no one in particular as she continued her way into the mansion.

She again noticed that the swimming pool was still as she remembered only for a red bloodstain at the entrance of the pool by the side.

"Could this be my dad's blood", she thought. " No it can't be, I know my parents are still breathing".

She made her way into the mansion. It was still as she remembered it to be.

Marco was behind her and reminded her that they shouldn't waste a lot of time in the mansion.

Davina had many good memories in the mansion. As she recalled some of her childhood memories, she wept. Davina went upstairs to her room, leaving Marco downstairs as he was also trying to figure things out for himself.

Her room was the way she remembered it to be but this time around, there were no toys like before, just a big pinky teddy bear on the bed. Her mum had decorated the room with the help of an interior decorator for her daughter's welcome back.

While Davina was upstairs, Marco noticed some men dressed in black with guns outside the gate as he looked through the window to be sure that they were safe. He immediately rushed upstairs to Davina who was already in her parents' room, glaring at a framed photo of her last birthday.

"We have to leave now". Marco said while pulling her hands, making the picture drop from her hands and break.

"What is happening, I want to spend some more time here. Maybe we can find something about my parents". Davina said.

Marco kept mute while trying to make sure they safely leave the mansion. The front door was already surrounded by unknown gunmen. There was a secret passage Marco knew, and he took Davina there.

"Where are we going to, why don't we go through where we came from. "Will you say someth....". While Davina was still speaking, DANG!!! A gun was shot at them almost hitting Marco on the head as they were leaving.

They found their way to the car and Marco speedily drove the car, leaving the mansion.
