Chapter 1: Prologue: Taste the end!

"The slaughter has just begun!"

A man ran for his life through the streets as his briefcase fell to the ground. Although it contained his life savings, it mattered too little at the moment. In fact, to him, nothing presently mattered more than how fast his fat legs could run.

Oh! The absolute regret of not taking exercising a serious thing in his younger years or better still, that he wasn't born an abomination with extra legs.

By his side, a woman held an infant tightly in her embrace and ran past him. He barely took a look at her before he was encouraged by her determination to survive and therefore put more energy into his lower body.

Deafening screams and hellish cries from all angles crowded his sense of hearing, but he did not even spare a glance. The only thing on his mind was to find a safe hole and crawl into it.

Just then, a sharp gust of wind passed, and the woman holding the infant in front of him suddenly had her head displaced from her body.

He stopped in his tracks as he watched in horror, the scene of her empty neck spraying out red liquid like an erupting volcano over his face.

However, the headless body did not stop moving forward for a distance before it realized it was no longer getting commands from the brain. The body wobbled a bit before falling to the side, and the child cried wildly.

As the body fell, it revealed before the man what one could only describe as an apex monstrosity bathing in the blood that came out of the woman's head.

The man instantly felt his knees go weak. He felt that his body was suddenly too heavy to carry. But by some unknown miracle, he persisted. Begging himself not to drop to his knees because he knew that if he did, he would be a goner.

He bravely but gently took one step at a time back as he prayed that his heavy legs would not distract the blood demon from its meal.

But wishes would forever be wishes. An empty can of soda behind him, revealed his presence as his shaking right leg unaware of the situation gave it a kick.

"Shit!" was the only word that popped in his head as those glaring red eyes turned in a sharp response to his footwork.

The beast looked at him and smiled revealing a set of teeth that could only compete with that of a great white shark.

That smile was the only motivation he needed to turn around and run in another direction. However, the moment he turned his head, the sight his eyes laid upon, could only be described in the book of revelations as the end time. Only, this end was not brought about by the blowing of some mystical trumpet but by the blowing of the mystical stupidity of man.

Houses were on fire, crushed cars sounded in loud alarms, and limbs and other human body parts littered the street like the aftermath of a sorority night party. Blood stained the streets and walls like a painter's workshop, and bloodsuckers feeding here and there were the artists while human beings were the opened buckets of paint.

The man in his confusion picked a corner and ran into a store. Shutting the door tightly behind him, he scaled over the cashier's desk and hugged his legs tightly under the table. He held tightly to his knees so fiercely that he resembled a donut as he panted heavily for breath.

He closed his eyes, becoming a prayerful believer in any god that came through his mind. Oh, how he wished that it was all a dream, that he would open his eyes and discover that it was just a nightmare because it seemed like one.

He could not help but ask himself how impossible a lot of what he just saw was. After all, it was public knowledge that even though those monsters were fierce, they couldn't come out in the daytime. But here it was, the middle of the day and it was but a massacre outside.

He was a renowned politician in this city. It's mayor for that matter. But here he was, hiding like a renowned coward in a thrift store. He could not help but wish that he had listened to the advice of his daughter and stayed at home today.

As he shut his eyes tightly and prayed, the dooming ring of the shop's doorbell sounded as it was opened gently.

In his hiding spot, he hugged his legs even tighter. His heavy breathing had suddenly slowed to a crawl. Although he had never had swimming lessons in his life, at this point, he could probably challenge and win any breath-holding competition.

At this time, he noticed wetness and a foul stench coming from his pants. but nevertheless, it did not matter. The warmth he felt from his crotch area only made him hug his legs tighter in search of a warmer comfort.

And then he heard it. The heavy footsteps, as they approached. It was not fast, nor was it slow, but every time they sounded, it was a reminder that sometimes, the grim reaper enjoyed playing with its food.

His teeth ground against each other in expectation of what his thoughts told him was inevitable.

However, as much as he expected, it did not come. Instead, it felt like the hard steps on the floor had suddenly disappeared. He still shut his eyes, waiting and waiting, but nothing happened. He was starting to believe that something was not right, or maybe by some stroke of divine luck, one of the many gods he had prayed to had decided to finally answer the prayer of their new faith-filled follower.

A few seconds that felt like ages came and went, yet nothing happened. He opened his eyes slowly. It was quiet everywhere. After a few more seconds, he summoned courage from the gods he had been praying to and slowly came out of his hiding place. looking around, he stood to his feet feeling relieved at how he had just escaped the clutches of death.

However, the loud sound of something falling to the ground immediately drew his attention. He turned sharply behind him to the source of the sound. Fortunately, it was just a passing cat.

He laughed a bit at himself. He could not believe how paranoid he just was. He turned around to face the cashier's desk. Just then, he saw something that was formerly not there. It was a human head.

He did not want to but curiosity was always an enticing mistress with her alluring calls. He reached out his shaking hand and touched it. Regardless of the blood stains on it, he still recognized the face. After all, it was the same woman that had run past him just moments ago.

Just then, his eyes caught sight of the drops of blood on the table, just beside the head. And then he lifted his head to see just where the blood was leaking from.

Behold, rows, and rows of razor-sharp teeth in a smile at him.

This was a sight that the last few seconds of his life would never be enough to help his regret.

Or will it!?
