Chapter 2: chapter 2

Farida's Mother

My daughter's life crumbled right before my eyes. And I couldn't do anything about it other than tell her lies. I had to. That's the only way she would get better. The doctor said that we shouldn't try to remind her of the past as it will only make her situation worse. He said that she may eventually start regaining her memory but her mental condition has to heal first or she may suffer another panic attack and that's the reason for all those lies.

How could I tell her that her husband isn't dead but he gave her a talak.

How could I tell her that it wasn't an accident but her attempt to commit suicide.

How could I even start to tell her how she got married to him. Her not remembering anything will make her blame us for it. And she would be right if she did that, it was all our fault. I still remember the awful day her father broke the bitter news to me.

Flash back

Sobs after sobs came from the living room. I got scared as I was the only one in the house, my daughter has gone to the university and her father had gone to work. I quickly placed the frying pan I was holding on the kitchen counter and stepped out of the kitchen as quietly as possible.

My heart broke at the sight of my husband sitting on the floor and crying. I couldn't help but let out a scream.

"Zawj! What happened, why are you crying" I said and he motioned for me to come closer. I went closer to him and lifted him off the floor and tried to get him to talk.

"What did we do to deserve this zawjah, we have been living our simple normal life without troubling anyone but troubles keep coming our way." He said between sobs.

My eyes teared up at how my husband sounded so helpless and hurt. What could have Happened this time.

"Zawj, just calm down and tell me What happened"

" He will take everything we have, he will destroy the little garage we have if we don't get our daughter married to him." To say I was shocked will be an understatement.

" Who is it. And what gives him the right to threaten us. Our shop is not his property and our daughter is not an object!"

" The shop is not his but the land is. We didn't buy the land zawjah, it's legally his not ours and on top of that, he is the son of the owner of the university farida is in and he promised to kick her out if we don't do as he said." My husband said wiping the tears off his face.

At that moment the world stood still. There is no way I will let my daughter get married to such a person, no. It will not happen. I need to have a talk with that man.

"Who is this horrible man?" I asked.

"Sudais sagir" My eyes darted to his as I recognized the name.

" Yes zawjah, the man we saw on the news yesterday, the heir of the sagir's empire in Dubai."

Of course, only men with so much power will do that.

Well sudais sagir, here I come.

I wanted to say something when the front door opened and farida walked in humming a song. My happy daughter. Despite our poor state, she always managed to stay happy.

The next day I found myself standing in front of a huge glass building. I let my eyes lift up and read what was written at the top.

"Sagir's building company"

I heard in the news that he arrived at London some days ago so I wanted to talk to him and try to make him change his mind or make him demand for something else as long as it's not my daughter or has anything to do with her.

"Do you have an appointment with him?" The receptionist asked me with a smile on her face.

"No, but please tell him I'm the mother of farida Ali." I said trying to be as polite as she was to me. No one deserves to be treated disrespectfully.

She made a call and directed me to his secretary. And before I knew it, I was sitting in his office.

"Assalamu'alaikum mother inlaw to be. What made you Grace me with your presence today." Sudais sagir asked me and I huffed at his attitude. He looked bigger in size than I had seen in the TV. The fear of letting him marry my daughter increased.

"What do you want from us. Why are you doing this. If it's about the land we took without your permission then please forgive us and we'll move our shop, but it's our only source of income and our daughter is the only child we have and I don't think she deserves such negativity in her life. Please reconsider this issue" Tears were now on my cheeks. If I wasn't hallucinating, I think I saw pain and guilt on his face. And he rubbed his face with both hands. And as soon as he lifted his hands, the grumpy expression returned.

" I don't want to make your life hard either, just give me your daughter and that's it. She'll get married one day anyway." He said as a matter of fact.

My face turned red with anger and I stood up from the chair.

"Do you think this is a joke? How can you mess with somebody's life like this. You should be ashamed of yourself. Marriage isn't child's play. What if she doesn't love you huh, what are you going to do about it?"

" Don't make things harder for yourself, I didn't think about this before but do you know I can buy your house and leave you on the streets? Don't call me wicked mother inlaw but I can do that just to marry your daughter. I'm not changing my mind. We should start the marriage preparations soon. Thank you for your visit."

With that he walked out of the office and left me in a shocked state.

I went back home defeated and ashamed. I couldn't change his mind.

I told my husband everything that happened with tears on my face but unfortunately, she heard everything and her father had already made up his mind.

"She will marry him." Was all he said.

After all my pleading and begging, she agreed with him. With tears we all slept that day. Until the day he finally took her from us and went far away without turning back.

Flash back ends

I looked at her beautiful face as she slept peacefully, it has been so long since I've seen her peaceful self. I smiled as I saw that her twins were sleeping on both sides of her and holding on to her like she would run away if they let go. I understand their fear, I can't loose her again either. I will try my hardest to help her heal and regain her memory. Even though knowing the fact that when she does regain her memory, it will be a hell on Earth for us.

But first, she has to move on. And I will make sure of it.
