Chapter 32: just a day

just a day

"I'll just be gone until tomorrow" Delvin reassured Astrid as he filled his backpack with supplies before fastening it to Snap-pine's saddle.

After the event of two days ago with the whole saboteur and Alvin situation, Delvin had decided that it would probably be best to visit the nest once again so that he could grab some more Red death skin. While he had already reinforced Berks defenses and his own possessions, such as his armour and Snap-pines saddle, recent events had shown just how important gobbers house truly was. All it took was one fire and the whole of berk had been left virtually defenseless

He would not allow that to happen for a second time

"Are you sure you don't need any help?" Astrid asked, looking over his shoulder before passing him some of his tools. Normally she or one of the riders would have gone with him to assist but with the present situation, berk needed all hands on deck at least until gobber had finished repairing everyone's weapons, which was another few days away "I could help with at least the physical labor" she offered

"No it's okay" Delvin replied, shaking his head as he began to lead Snap-pine out of his personal stable. "All I'm doing is getting enough for the supports and insulation of gobbers house and some extra for any new products I make," he said, trying to put Astrid's worries aside, he knew how much she hated being sidelined, even for work "if you really want to help out, gobber needs at least a dragon if he wants to get both the weapon and house repairs are done on time," he told her, offering a middle ground

"...Fine" Astrid agreed before grabbing his arm in a spartan handshake (that's the one where you hold the forearm) and offering a quick "Stay safe" before walking over in the direction of gobbers yells

Taking off, Delvin slid his halberd into a large sheath on the saddle and began to direct Snap-vine on where to go, since now there was no queen acting as a beacon for dragons. Thankfully, hiccup had been kind enough to add the location onto his map, allowing for easier trips. The flight was relatively calm as flights went, although he did have a run-in with a swarm of wild terrible terrors, but a few scale shots from Snap-pine sent them packing

Upon arriving at the volcanic island, Delvin was quickly able to the large landmark that was the Red Death's corpse, which he could smell from even up in the sky.

It smelt horrendous, exactly what you would expect the rotting corpse of a mountain-sized dragon to smell like

Landing a few meters and draping a few cloths over both his face and Snap-pine beak to both mask the stink and prevent them from breathing in anything that could cause disease, he'd actually soaked and dried the cloths in sweet perfume which was amazing at masking the smell of rot and death

Unpacking his bag, Delvin took out a few tools, saws, and knives, which he would be using. While the flesh and inside the dragon were rotting, the scales and skin were still just as tough as they had once been when it was alive. Putting on his bag he grabbed hold of Snap-pines saddle from the side, allowing the dragon to lift him up onto the corpse before dropping on the "dig site"

The "dig site" was a specific section of the side of the red death from which which he had been carving and carefully preserving, it rested between the should and ribs, not far from the armpit. Once landed Delvin began to work, first he had to drop into the already precut section, which was about a meter deep, then he had to walk up to one of the sides and began cutting. He had to cut a few centimeters below the skin, along its rope-like nerves, but just above the muscles, which allowed for him to sever the skin with minimal damage to the product.

The work was long and smelt like crap, literally, since the dragon had long ago emptied its bowls weeks ago. It took hours for him to cut enough skin and scales of the right depth, even with the help of Snap-pine. And when he was finally done he then loaded them onto the saddle of Snap-pine, by this point night had fallen, and he was ready to have Snap-pine fly him back to berk, where he would go to the pit, sleep, cure the hide and then cart it back to the village. However, that was when Snap-pine let out a growl, causing his cloth to shift and vibrate.

Looking around Delvin couldn't see anybody nearby, but he soon noticed something else, on the corpse of the Red death. There, a few meters away, the skin was glowing! Bright purple and smoking the skin, which would normally be sitting above the lungs, had begun to glow and swell. It continued to grow and swell for the next few minutes, growing like a tumor and causing Delvin to try and calm his increasingly nervous dragon

Until suddenly the giant growth exploded! Spewing Black and purple into the fog like a demonic geyser! Delvin could feel the ground below him literally sink as the strange smoke and air left the red death's long-dead lungs, escaping like an air bubble in a tank

Losing his footing as the body of the red death shifted, Delvin fell onto his ass before beginning to slide! Snap-pine fell beside him also struggling for a grip, however, strong as it was the skin of the Red death along the stomach which they were sliding along was smooth and rubber-like, causing them to keep falling towards the ground below, like some sort of horrendously morbid slide!

However, things only grew worse as the tail of the beast that had been once curled up to the body fell with a crash! Splitting the Ground! And as the giant crack grew bigger and bigger with a shattering hiss, Delvin watched as it drew closer and closer before he and Snap-pine were thrown in, screaming all the while

And he watched, as he fell down into the abyss as the crack they had fallen through was soon covered up once again, either by debris or the dragon's body

Sealing them in as the ground swallowed them whole
