Chapter 56: Rejection

Tokyo, Japan,

Aichi Academy,

Samuel POV,

Samuel sat against a wall at the back of the school building, a hand on his knee as he looked up somewhat distraught. The girl was no older than 16 and he had made her see death... It didn't matter if she was the cause of the duel itself, it was never meant to go that far.

'I've no idea why killing a child is considered more dastardly than an adult.' Echidna tried to cheer him up in her own way, either way, the one dying would be a human no? 'Why reject one's own nature?' She asked rhetorically, this behaviour was self destructive if anything to the witch.

"I.... because it's not.. right." Samuel sighed somewhat helplessly, he had no real words to respond with or something to base his rejection on, one would say morals and ethics but that thought didn't quite cross the teenager's mind.

'Because it's not a good thing?' Echidna rested her head in a hand, slightly sighing as Samuel nodded, 'And why do you have to be good?' She would much rather he run wild and live as he truly desired.

"I guess, I owe that much to whoever gave me this and my... family."

Perhaps it was because there was no one who knew, or anyone that he could actually confide in that he was talking to the Witch. An individual equal to himself. There was no one else on this planet that he could discuss something like this with.

'That's curious. Who defines this good? Perhaps even your true nature is good to someone?' Echidna questioned curiously, take her for example, she found that nature far better than this 'act'... but then again, even she didn't know what was and wasn't an act.

"I've no idea."

'Which one is the real you in the first place? The calm, nice and helpful Samuel Hayes now or the one that enjoys nothing more than seeing others in physical pain and despair?'

"I.. don't know."

Samuel exhaled deeply, looking at the clear blue sky, "I guess I got some real problems." He muttered out in defeat, why was life so complicated?

'Stop being so down, you're ruining even my mood.' Echidna smiled, her head in her hands as she observed her contractor. He was a really really really interesting person.

"Yeah, yeah, my bad." Samuel slapped his cheeks, shaking his head to get rid of the gloomy thoughts before jumping to his feet. First order of business was to apologise to the girl, he also wanted to leave this school even more now.

Perhaps he was just a coward.

'What's the reason for this?'

"...." Samuel was silent again, there was no reason. If there was, he didn't know what it was. It was just feelings, was it emotional impulses? "Emotions?"

...The witch was completely silent for a few moments before..... she started giggling, her voice echoing in his head, 'That's very human of you isn't it?'

"Thanks I guess." Samuel scratched the back of his head with a small smile, maybe she wasn't that bad a person after all.

'Don't mention it. After all, no matter what happens. I'm always your ally.'

Was the witch moved only by curiosity still?

Who knows..

"Senpai!" Hayasaka, who just arrived, called out for him with a worried expression on her face.. Only Samuel simply ruffled her hair as he passed by, "Acting is alright but, you might end up forgetting who you are."

With those words, he was gone only, Hayasaka was frozen in place now. "How did-...?!" Her eyes widened in a mixture of surprise and shock, had she been seen through already?

....Just what kind of person was she dealing with here?

Hayasaka just then decided to be more careful and slow in her approach instead of fast. A small embarrassed blush spread across her face, for all her toughness, it was true that the maid had no experience with men. Especially those that weren't idiots who could just be led around...

And what did he even mean by that?!

There was no way she would forget herself.... right?

She wanted to throw a tantrum for being handed such an annoying task.

Once again, Samuel found himself in a classroom, twirling around the card in his hand with a small smile on his face. Echidna was really useful when it came to things like these but it also made things kind of boring..

'You could always pay attention.'

...That was even more boring so Samuel chose to stay silent in response. The card itself now had 3 out of 5 circles stamped, now there were only Satori and Warabi to go and he would get a recommendation and passing certificate from this place.

Tsukuyo, who was accompanying him today as well, could only look in his direction in awe and respect. That realm of swordsmanship was something even she hadn't reached, hell, there was no one in this day and age... To do it without a sword was a feat demanding great respect and immaculate effort.

She was the one called a monster when it came to the sword, what was the right word for him then?

She didn't know that the level he was at was something achieved in no small part to sheer bloodlust.

With this incident taking place in plain sight, Samuel's reputation had gone up once more. Some of the students initially couldn't avert their gazes from him and ended up being scolded by the teachers for it.

For the boys, he was a source of shame and at the same time, motivation. Deep down, everyone knew that none of the men here were doing what they did by force, the feelings and thoughts mainly swirling around in the school at the moment were something like this,

'Fucking useless, submitted cause of pain. Look at that guy.'

'If he can do it, why can't we?'

Well something like that would be the best example.

Currently at the headmistress' office, a girl with short hair and strange eyes that seemed more dead than anything was calmly sipping tea, holding up the plate elegantly as listened. She sat directly across from the headmistress' seat. A shelf containing numerous trophies lay to her right.

"Is this really alright?" The headmistress, Yukino, asked plainly, tilting her head to the side, the school could be in danger at this rate.

The girl swirled around her teacup, holding a hand over her mouth, "Students are to study no? Studying would get boring without some entertainment once in a while.."

"..." Yukino could only nod in response, the petite yet beautiful girl that sat in front of her at this moment was Koharu Narukami, and Yukino was her bodyguard. It was obvious who was superior here.

"Hehe, well, it's like dogs barking up a wall they could never cross.." She calmly placed down the teacup as well as the plate, holding her hands to her cheeks,

"Dogs know their places well. The new one doesn't~ Ma, but that's very amusing~."

A wretched smile formed across her face, her red pupils seemingly swirling as she tilted her head,

"I do believe it will die down soon."

The system was deep rooted, there was no way something big could happen.. and besides, what change could one man bring about?

It was entertaining so it was fine!

"Call that boy.. He seems to not understand just why and how he was let in." Koharu smiled widely, looking somewhat deranged.

"As you desire." Yukino bowed with a hand over her heart, it wasn't her place to object to this rather strange decision.

Samuel rubbed his chin in thought, staring intently at one of the male students.... this was really annoying to watch for him to be honest. Unfortunately, he had no authority regarding the matter. He could shout out his displeasure all he wanted and nothing would change at all.

"Is there some way to end this stupid system?" Samuel wondered out loud, glancing at Tsukuyo, she would definitely have some idea right?

...Was he meddling here?

... It didn't matter.

'Lawsuit, it's surprising this place is still allowed... It's a shutdown waiting to happen.... unless.. no nevermind.' Echidna offered her opinion based on what she knew.
