Chapter 2: Chapter Two

One decade later ...

Brad Fergus is already sixty years old but he's still healthy and strong.  He is still the best hunter in the town.  He has no son of his own that's why every time he hunts he wished to meet Liam even once.  The kind Liam never visited him once.  He forgets Mr. Fergus the one who saved and raised him. The heart of the old man always longed for Liam. He doesn't have any idea where to find the poor Liam. The old man hoped that Liam would visit him, but Mr. Fergus was disappointed. That will never happen in a decade.

Much has changed in their village. Time brought back everyone's happiness and it draws smiles to people's lips once again.  The people of Grindelwald have no longer heard a howl and woof of a wolf.  Peace came back and its reign. The living system of the people in the village returned, a simple way of life yet productive.

In the morning you will hear melodious music, up to the music of nature. Every night you will hear jazz music. Three o'clock in the morning people turn their Radio on for early morning programs and 90's music.

The people returned to farming which is one of the ways of life of the people there, the farming practices there were previously stopped by the residents because of the story that spread then but now they have continued. Everyone rejoiced, but Mr.  Fergus was sad he badly missed Liam. Poor Liam what if he was no longer alive and had been killed by some other hunters from a neighboring village.

That's what Mr. Fergus often thinks. What if the hunters had already killed Liam.  Everywhere he went, and even as he lay on his bed he always saw Liam and in his peripheral vision, he saw his sweet smiles. A welcoming smile that spells hospitality and kindness. He could still remember Liam's perfect visage and features.

He's nowhere to be found and that makes the old Fergus depressed for a long time.  But at the same time, Mr. Fergus thought that Luna is alive and he would be glad if she was alive and for these past years she's the one who took care of Liam. The old Brad Fergus clearly remembered a scream of a woman the night he saved Liam, a scream that tears the air. So she wasn't alive but he was hopeful.

Mr. Fergus went out of his house with the shotgun dangling from his back.  He walked and walked farther. In recent years he has done nothing but goes into the forest to hunt, the old man also thinks that he might be lucky and see Liam again. Yesterday he left a killing trap in the forest, for the past years his trap is effective and it's called a killing trap since when the big animals like deer are trapped in his killing trap, it is expected that they cannot live for a minute it will immediately die.

He used that killing trap because he didn't want to reach an animal that was still alive and having difficulty in his trap.

His feet were nimbler and he walked fast and doesn't give a damn on a rocky route to the forest. He cannot explain why his heart suddenly pounding and its beat became faster and faster. It was like the night Luna and he met. He wasn't used to the feeling that he was scared. He feared nothing but inhumane hunters from the neighboring village. Mr. Fergus has his biggest fear and he doesn't want to think about it anymore. However, it still has its way to register in his mind.  It's about his trap. What if one day Liam is trapped in his trap?  He didn't know why he thought about that thing. Deadliest thing.

He had a feeling that Liam was not far from him. He thought that Liam is just around and his dear Liam is keep looking for him and protecting him. But he also couldn't help but think Liam was dead. What made him think about that? Is it because Liam doesn't appear? Oh, no the more he thought about Liam's absence the more he's broken and too dismal.

He stops and observes his surrounding.  When he looked at the brown leaves on the earth he saw an amount of fresh blood.  He bent down to touch the blood with his bare hand.  It's still warm.  It's fresh blood indeed.  Again Mr. Fergus feels nervous. He stood up and continue walking to check his trap.  As he walked, he imagined what was playing in his mind. Where did that blood come from? In whose wound came from?  Or maybe it's the blood of animals caught by other hunters.  He stopped first and took a deep breath, and later he continued walking.

His eyes widened and unable to speak. He was looking at a lifeless young gray wolf trapped in his trap. His heart melted. He was broken seeing the poor gray wolf.  It was his fault, he blamed himself for the death of the young and innocent wolf.  If he hasn't left a killing trap, the young wolf wouldn't die.  Based on the form and size of the wolf, he knew that it was one of the young werewolves and had not yet returned to human form. He seemed to be choking while observing the poor wolf. What does it do to his trap?  His trap is reserved for wild pigs, deer, and so on and not for a wolf.

Mr. Fergus's eyes were filled with warm tears and he cannot control the veil of his tears from falling. He cried in torment. It was a tragic picture in the world seeing the lifeless wolf being trapped in his killing trap, perhaps when it still had a second to breathe, it was struggling, it was howling for help, it was deadly struggling until it lost its breath. His very own heart was broken into pieces. He wiped his wet cheeks with his palms.  How did that happen? He couldn't believe it. He looked closely as if the wolf had a gunshot wound on its shoulder. He thought that other hunters might have killed it and just placed it in his trap.

Mr.  Fergus was aware of the pack of werewolves' revenge. He thinks werewolves might attack Grindelwald village again like what had happened one decade ago. He was crushed by what happened to that wolf. And, why he was still there, blaming himself? Did he deserve to blame himself? To cry isn't enough but he was broken and too emotional.

He suddenly returned to his state of mind when he noticed the simultaneously falling off the foliage of trees into the ground. He could hear footsteps that seem to belong to a giant. Mr. Fergus suddenly looked for a hole to hide, and he was lucky when he saw a hole under a tree he quickly thrust himself in there and cover the entrance with the dried foliage. His heartbeat drummed in his ears. He could not understand why.

He peeked through a little hole. He saw a group of men, with massive chests.  They sniff everywhere. He knows that they're werewolves. Werewolves that people talked about and saw back then. Mr. Fergus couldn't breathe and he focus his attention on them. The tall man bends down to a lifeless wolf.  He weep and cried. He was their Alpha. The leader of the wolves.

To see a werewolf is not new to Mr. Fergus. The truth is the werewolf live with them in the village during the day and returned to their home in the forest at night.

"Son," He cried and wept.

Mr. Fergus's heartbeat slowed as he hold his breath. He was stiffed to death as he feel something crawl through his back. A snake, yes, a snake. He has a scared feeling that the snake might bite him. He holds his breath even more as the snake makes a sharp sibilant sound near his head. He slowly closed his eyes as the snake pass his head and crawl outside.

He let out a deep long sigh and he opened his eyes again.

"Dear Alpha we can't return your son's life, we can't do that. We don't have the power to do that even if you pray to our god" said the old man with long hair.

He was fortunate. He knows when those men turn into wolves he was sure they would see him. They're only sniffing in the air without confirming that man is hiding near them. They don't look scary.  They have muscular bodies and wear decent clothes.

"I will seek revenge and bring grief to whoever made this to my only son." The leader of the pack said clenching his teeth.  He has a cruel and brutal appearance.  "I will never put an end to my revenge." His jaw tightens.  He looks furious.

"No one else does this to your son lord Maximo but Mr. Fergus the best hunter in the village" a young man announced in a foghorn voice.

Mr. Fergus knows that guy. He always buys meat and vegetable in the market

He wants to come out and defend himself with an explanation. He wanted to explain that it wasn't in his intention to hunt for a wolf or catch something similar to one of them. That was not his purpose as a hunter.  He knew that was what other hunters often did to hunt down unopposed werewolves in that forest. The mountain is known as the mountain of the werewolves. Or the home of the Wildfang Shadows.

The leader nodded.  "I will show no mercy in his bloodline, I will tear his body apart and drink his blood. I will bring terror again in the Grindelwald." He's Maximo the Alpha of the Wildfang Shadows. One of the most feral leaders of the werewolves and among other packs and rouge scared of him. He can break your leg using his only hand and strength.

Mr. Fergus was scared and hearing what the Alpha Wildfang shadows had said it was scared him to death.  How he will save the village now against the powerful Alpha?  He's just an ordinary man relying on his shotgun.  He did not know what he could do.

Maximo the Alpha roughly wipes away his tears and he lifts the lifeless wolf and he carried it away. The other men followed him and keep looking around.

He immediately got out of the hole and ran full speed following the route back to the foot of the mountain.  He was panting as he got out of the forest and he was out of breath walking slowly down the hill. He could barely take another step, but when he took another one his knees were trembling.  His legs are giving out, no strength left for the old man.

He took a deep breath.

He sits on the rock and lay on the earth looking at the peaceful horizon.  He was tired of walking, he has an overburdened brain and a painful heart. He couldn't accept what was happening that day. The only thing he knew was the thing that happened is unintentional. It was not in his damn intention to kill the wolf because the werewolf since then has never been his enemy. He respects them.

Now, the Alpha wanted revenge. They want blood for their vengeance. Maximo loves to break a bone. He slaps his face ten times. The village is at risk now. The villagers need to evacuate. Is there a Mercy left for Maximo and if he has Fergus would ask him to take his own life and let the villager live in peace. That's selfless love.

He thought of Liam again. What if he dies like how the innocent wolf in his trap?  What if he dies bitterly? He doesn't want to think that he's already died but since that Liam doesn't appear for a decade, therefore, he concluded that he's dead. He hopes he is still alive. Because he would never stop finding him or is Liam belongs to the Wildfang Shadows pack?  He hope Liam didn't die that bitter way. He has a big hope that Liam is in Wildfang.

Mr. Fergus slowly closed his eyes and fall asleep. Damn, when he was opening his eyes again the sun began to sink in the east.  He's been sleeping there for almost two hours.

With his heavy heart, he began to walk again. There's a time that he stops and cries. He walks slowly and he felt that the weight of the world is upon his shoulders it saps the strength and courage in his heart. When he reached home and when he checked his mobile phone.  His eyes widened in shock.

Hi Uncle Brad, this is Keiran. Mom finally give me permission to move to your Village and live with you for a while.

There's no reason for his nephew to live in the village. He needs to return to the city.

Hi, Uncle.  I'm on my way to Grindelwald.  I took a bus ..

Why Kieran? You can't, please, just go back to the city Mr. Fergus's mind shouted. Keiran can't go there because Maximo's revenge has already begun. His life might be exposed to danger. But how could he explain it to him? Keiran is on his way to Grindelwald. He shook his head in despair and took a glance at a clock, it chimes seven in the evening.

He thought that if only he received that message this morning he would ask Keiran not to continue his plan to move with him.  How could he say 'Keiran, You can't, it was dangerous'

He sighed and opened the door wide and he leaned himself there waiting for Keiran's arrival.
