Chapter 4: The Journey - part 2
I don't know why , but I kept the letter with me . Then I went to the kitchen , I couldn't find anything interesting there . My eyes drifted towards the shelf with two pans , I packed the pans in my bag because I felt it might come in handy while escaping the zombies .
I returned to the couch in the main hall and tried to sleep but I couldn't . I kept having flashes of today , how the world changed in just a few days and how all of our lives had changed drastically. Right when I was deep in my thoughts , I felt a hand on my shoulder . I turned around expecting Benny , only to find out it was Kyle .
" Can't sleep ? " , he asked . " Can you ? ", I responded.
" Well... when we have hoards of zombies chasing us and half of the world collapsing right in front of our eyes , I guess not ", he replied .
"Can you believe , just yesterday we were sitting in our classrooms , listening to lectures , living a life every normal student does and today we're survivors , facing zombies and trying to find a safe place for the sake of our dear lives ? " , I asked .
" I know , I can't believe it either . It feels like we're all living in some sort of nightmare waiting to be woken up " , " But who could have thought that we would be working together , without wanting to kill each other " , he replied .
I chuckled . If someone in the past would have told me I'd be having this conversation with Kyle , I would have laughed at their faces and here I am having a nice conversation with him , without wanting to strangle him .
" Well "
"You're not so bad after all . I might have started to like your company " , I said .
No response .... I turn around , only to find out he has slept .
Today for the first time I notice him , his dark brown hairs , skin glistening in the moon light coming from the window and then I notice his scar . The scar was right above his eye so I couldn't help but think what could have possibly happened . He had a perfectly peaceful face while asleep , as if an angel had been sent to earth from the very depths of heaven .
I then wrapped the blanket I had , on him as it was freezing cold and I didn't want him to catch a cold .
" Good morning , Amara " , someone whispered in my ears and I open my eyes only to find out it's Benny . I then realize that I was covered in a blanket and for a second , just for a second , I thought it must have been the person I was hoping it to be but then I hear Benny say
" Why did you not use a blanket ? It's freezing cold outside and you could catch a cold . I had to cover you in one when I woke up and found you shivering on the couch. "
Then he saw it , the blanket that he had given me , was covering Kyle . He did not say a word and just kept quiet .
Everyone was awake except Kyle and Arden wanted to do the honours of waking the sleeping beauty .
Once everyone was up , all of us freshened up and decided to check for some useful things in the military man's house . We got two bags , a torch , a swiss knife , few ropes and most importantly, we found a gun in his locker with many bullets . Kyle suggested that I kept the gun with me , I did not see any problem in that and so I kept it with me without any question .
We then left the house and started to walk our way , to find a vehicle and some store to restock food and water . We also needed medicines , we don't know what the path ahead was gonna throw at us . We need to be prepared for any situation that arises .
We must have been walking for hours and then at last we found an all-in-one store . We packed food that would stay good for long and also provide us all the necessary nutrients . One of the bag was stuffed with water bottles because that was one of the most necessary thing we required and we had a small bag filled with medicines and a first aid kit that we found there . We had to keep ourselves hydrated , healthy and full , in order to keep going .
Wondering why we're still walking ?
Well , we couldn't find any vehicle that was in proper shape . Every vehicle that we found on our way , was either smashed totally or had some important parts missing .
" Guys ? We might have a bit of a problem here " , Linda said .
" what's wrong ? Did you not find a hair straightener ? " , Arden mocked .
" I'm not joking , about eight to ten zombies are headed right towards this store " , she yelled .
All of us stopped whatever we were doing and started running to the back door of the store .
SLAM!!!
We closed the door behind us .
"We escaped those zombies just to face more of them outside ! " , Aria exclaimed .
I then remembered the pans I had packed in my bag . I took them out and gave them to Linda and Benny as Kyle had a swiss knife , Arden took my camping survival knife kit , Aria had a rod that she had picked from the military man's house and I had a gun . I know why Kyle had asked me to keep the gun , he knew I was the best at 'aiming and shooting' since high school . I had won twenty six medals in shooting , most of them gold and very few of them silver .
There were about a sixteen of them . I took down two of them and then I had to reload the bullets , by that time Linda and Benny had taken two of them ,Aria managed to take out one of them , Kyle alone took three of those zombies and Arden took two of them .
While everyone was busy fighting them off , I didn't notice one of the zombies coming right at me , before I could make a move , I was on the floor and about to get bitten but then I hear someone say " Get up ! You're safe " . It was Kyle , he had chopped off the zombie's head and then helped me stand up . My bullets were reloaded and I took out four of them right away . Only one of them was remaining and Benny took it out with his pan . But then we realized, because of noises from all the fighting , every zombie present around the area was headed right towards the us .
We were now being chased by a big hoard of around hundred to two hundred zombies , we did not turn back , we kept running until.....
"Ahhh..." , he yelled .
Kyle wasn't watching his steps while running and he stepped on glass pieces , though he was wearing shoes , the pieces were sharp enough to penetrate through them . We had almost lost the zombies but they were still behind us .
" Go!!! " , he said .
" What ? I'm not leaving you here . We survived so long together and we will all survive ahead together . You are coming with us " , I replied.
" Yes , we're not leaving you behind " , everyone agreed
We helped Kyle walk and decided we should find a place to hide because if we continued on road , the zombies could catch up on us any second . Kyle wasn't in the position to walk either and we had to treat his wounds because he was loosing a lot of blood .
We couldn't keep moving in search of an abandoned house , so we entered the nearest house . Surprisingly the lights were on and then suddenly the lights went off . There was surely someone else in the house along with us , we could hear their footsteps . We became alert and held on tight to our weapons . We could not see anything clearly , we could only fear for our dear lives if they were zombies .
Then suddenly the lights were back on and ...
