Chapter 2: .2.

As soon as he turned away, I ducked further into the dark. When he turned back, I could see his confusion.

"Right here. There was a boy right here, I tell you!" He spun in a circle. "Where'd he go? You guys see him?" They just looked at him, blinked and continued walking towards their car. "Must be going nuts out here." The green haired guy told himself before he followed them.

They drove off once everyone was in the car.

I stood when I could no longer hear the hum of their vehicle.

That had been a close call.

I looked at my hands as they changed. Wisps of dark, shadowy smoke slowly becoming solid skin as I entered the light.

There was no blood where the boy had been. No signs that anyone had been there or been taken. The men had done nothing to clean up the spot, yet there wasn't a single trace of evidence left behind.

I kicked at the nothingness and walked off to my right, opposite the direction the vehicle had gone.

I walked for some minutes before the purple lights came into view, almost hidden by the faux imagery. To humans, the building I see would be a forest hidden by a massive stone wall. To students of the Beastly Academy, it was home and school all in one.

I focused my mind before walking through the faux imagery and entering the main gate. I gave my pass to the guard at the entrance as his tentacles swished the air around my body checking for traces of magic. When he found none, his tentacles returned inside his baggy sweatshirt. He returned my pass as he shut the log book.

"Good night to you, Mr. Prensi." He gave me a nod and returned to his post.

I walked up the path, off the driveway. The building loomed with blue and purple hues, glowing in the dark. I walked toward the left building where the blue lights were concentrated.

"Did you see anything?" My roommate sat on the steps. Behind him was his cousin. "You don't look so good."

I did feel queasy but was surprised it even showed. "We better go inside first." I told them, leading the way in.

At our room, I told them what the men had done. They both sat on my bed, quiet, which was surprising. I'm a regular built guy but everyone in the building avoids me. Not because I'm gross or creepy or popular but it's just something that's normal.

Even my roommate doesn't hug me or sit on my bed in general. The surprising part wasn't that he was on my bed though. The surprising part was that they were both quiet.

"So...they almost caught you." Rowan was looking me dead in the eyes.

"Yeah." I nodded. "'Course they got Arthur and I couldn't do anything about it...but yeah. They almost got me."

"How do we get Arthur back?" Geo asked.

"I don't know." I could hear chatter coming from downstairs. "But we can pick this up in the morning. Monitors are patrolling." I opened the door for Geo and waited.

"Okay. I'll try to find some plans. You guys don't keep me in the dark." He looked over at me and smiled. I smiled back as I closed the door behind him. They were the only two that made jokes around me. The Dark Boy.

"Go get some rest, Row. We'll pick this all up in the morning." I waited for him to move, then for him to fall asleep before I went to shower. I got under my covers and disappeared into the sheets five minutes before the monitors got to our door.

They knocked twice. I knocked my bed frame twice and they moved on.

As they walked on, I listened until I fell asleep to the thumps of their light steps.
