Chapter 2: A Drive Through The Countryside

The smell of the freshly cut fields emanates into Penelopes car as she drives along the countryside, the road is straight in front of her as she begins to put her foot right down on the pedal for the first time.

"Woooooooooo" she shouts as she pokes her arm out of the open window letting it sway quickily in the powerful winds.

'I want to feel alive' she thought to herself. Her work, although interesting, was becoming the norm for her. New discoveries of old specimens in the field, usually, was just day to day for Penelope. This made her happy, but her life was simple.

'Go to work and go home' was the constant phrase in her mind. Although gut-wrenching to her, it was just her life. 'Her boring life' sneaked into the back of her mind a couple of times. She thought she was being stupid, knowing she had her dream job, her dream cottage, her dream dog, her dream car. 'What more do you want!?' Penelope thought to herself.

Not thinking about, well anything to do with sense and safety anymore, she puts the accelerator pedal down to the floor.

"HOLY SHIT" Penelope shouts out loud, her whole petite but curvy body pressed right back into the seat.

"One hundred and thirty miles per hour let's fucking go" she laughs.

Not getting enough, the speedometer climbs higher in no time to one hundred and forty miles per hour. Penelope bursts into uncontrollable laughter, the adrenaline at it's peak. Out of no where, a voices shouts at her...

"STOP".

"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" Penelope screams in shock as she grabs the steering wheel, her car swerving in the middle of the road.

Although she was very silly and irresponsible in this moment, she had a lot of common sense, so she slowly applied the brakes before coming to a stop in a layby. Penelope looks at her hands as they shake on the steering wheel, she swiftly looks round to find no one else in her car, of course. Her heart rate raised to an alarming rate, she pops the car boot open and quickly looks inside, nothing.

"I'm going insane I'm going insane" Penelope repeats over and over again, her hands and breathing still shaky.

After a few seconds, she gently closes the car boot, with her back leaning against it, she looks up to the sky and closes her eyes, crossing her arms as she takes shaky breaths in and out, calming herself down. A flock of noisy seagulls flies overhead. Her eyes still closed, Penelope listens to them as they pass, thinking of the many times she has been to the seaside with her family, some of her fondess memories.

After a few minutes, she checks her watch to find the field work is set to begin in only five minutes.

"FUCK" Penelope saids out loud.

She quickly jumps into her car, this time driving at a reasonable enough speed, and arrives at the location just in time.

Getting her equipment out of her car and throwing it over her shoulder, she briskly walks up a grand dry hill in the middle of the vast countryside, looking side to side occasionally to take in the view. Taking a breath, she groups with her team who are already in attendance.

"You took your time", a moody older man called Eric, around his late fourties saids in a not too friendly tone.

"Hello to you too, I'm on time Eric", Penelope answers back in a huff.

"Morning Pen, you are here now that's all that matters", a lady called Fiona, who had just turned fifty, saids with a genuine smile.

"Good morning Fi", Penelope smiles back at her with a nod.

Fiona was one of her only friends, Penelope not having many, she valued the ones she did have. Fiona was there for her when her family passed, it just so happened she followed the same career path, being in the same university class and now on the same Palaeontological team.

"Let us get to it then", a man in his late thirties, called Henry, chimed in.

"Let's go", agrees a lady called Amelia, around her early thirties.

The team broke off, Fiona however joined Penelope as they began to walk further up the hill.

"How has your morning been?" Fiona said quietly and in a slightly concerned tone to Penelope as they walk side by side.

Fiona knew Penelope was never not early and had her off days, no surprise really, but she never ever took that to work with her, she was a proud professional after all.

"It's been a weird one I must say" Penelope replied quietly, confused printed clearly on her face.

"What makes you say that?", interest peaking on Fiona's slightly sunburnt face.

"Mmmh, nothing important really Fi... Also you're sunburnt" Penelope laughs and her and Fiona suddenly split to their seperate areas.

Fiona momentarily looks at Penelope in confusion as she strides away, but she quickly shrugs it off.

Penelope finds a random spot in the field where she can start excavating till her hearts content. Putting her equipment down and applying suncream quickly to her fair white skin, she begins...
