Chapter 2: Decision

It was time to decide whether to consider the letter or not. The two people were still disturbed, Oluk was not a person to rely on so much. A mistake they made would cost them suffering. Jessica was even more afraid than her husband, Odwil.

She asked him in a low tone, "Based on the past experiences you have had with your brother, do you think he has changed? I am still scared, do you think he will do as he states?"

He was silent. His face filled with expressions of sorrow while he was still thinking.

She asked him again," do you think he will treat us as he stated in the letter?"

They both fell silent, and Jessica became more tranquil. She noticed that almost all her questions fired up anger in her husband and so, she decided to humble herself.

"I am sorry for my vexing words, my husband," she said.

"All is well, my wife. I understand. That is the way most of you talk," he replied as he looked at her from an angle, his eyes turned red as if he was transforming into another creature.

He then resumed his silence, his statements and look were both scary. Jessica felt her husband's discomfort for the first time.

After a three-minute silence, Odwil uttered his opinion. He talked in a loud voice as if he was addressing someone at a distance and gradually reduced it to his normal.

He said, "Our land has been commandeered. We only own this grass-thatched house and the compound. If only we can plant seeds in the compound, then we shall survive. Or else, we die and the fools bury us. Obviously, when we die, they will disturb us even in the grave. They will tamper badly with our possessions and disguise the evidence that we ever existed here. No one will be there to intervene. For God's sake, let us dispense with the past and concentrate on the future. I know my brother very well, we may move there not only for his company and the care he will give us but also for God may be guiding us to our relief."

She stared at him for about five minutes in a feeling-induced silence. Jessica was vexed by her husband's statement that pointed out their need for moving to Kampala. Her tears started falling off her eyes like dripping rainwater, and her eyes too turned red. She later gained confidence and decided to be restrained in her response.

She said," you are my husband and I respect your authority. If you have already made your decision, I shall not intrude into it. Let us do as you say. All I know is, blood is thicker than water."

Odwil rose to his feet and told her," For the love of God, we shall never be thwarted. Let us pray, God, for you have so loved us that we are called your children. That is why we shall always abide by your guidance both in peace and tumult. So, take control of our lives. We pray while believing in the mighty name of your son Jesus Christ, our Lord and savior" they both said "Amen"

Then, Odwil staggered out of the room, knocking objects here and there before he regained stability. He reached out into the courtyard and stood still as if he was in a parade, he was perturbed. He then regained his bated consciousness gradually to normal and he returned to the house. It was becoming dark.

A heavy wind blew over the place for about five minutes, shaking the roof of the house. They were again in turmoil. Odwil was seated in a wooden chair next to the door. He rose up quickly and fluttered towards the door but he did not move out.

Finally, the wind ceased and Odwil and his wife moved to the bed. The latter was more confident but her husband had a sleepless night, he turned over and over under the cover of darkness. His recurring thoughts were not yet mitigated.

He then slept at dawn the next day. As he snored, he made an uproar that was tantamount to sounds made at a waterfall. His wife was already out preparing some porridge for their breakfast.

She rushed in quickly and found him almost falling off the bed, he was in deep sleep. Jessica reposed him carefully onto the bed and she went back to continue with her work.
