Chapter 3: CHAPTER 3: WANNA SEE SOMETHING?

Even though I was really shocked, I knew better than to keep put in my present position, so I made to the door.

'I knew you were here the whole time,' I heard Meghan say as she slowly walked into the parlor. The room immediately seemed to lack ventilation. I felt my heart jump out of my chest. My brain became unreliable as I just froze, standing there. I turned to see sad Meghan. Somehow on seeing her red swollen eyes and her beautiful but messy hair, my agonizing fear dissipated. I felt sorry for her.

'I was just on my way out.' Those were the only words I could finally come up with. 'You know, he doesn't…he doesn't think I'm responsible or mature or reasonable,' she said in-between gentle sobs. Was she talking to me?

'I wasn't prepared to come to Coal City, but I had to! And I've made friends here. I like here,' she said still sobbing. She made her way to the couch and looked at me like she wanted me to sit with her.

'So…you're a witch?' I said still amazed.

'Yeah,' she said simply with a chuckle. She was probably amused by my tone and surprise. 'That's…cool!' I said trying to whisper. I failed.

'I guess,' she smiled.

'Wanna see something?' she asked enthusiastically. She looked happy and relieved, even though her eyes were still a bit swollen and there was still rebellious mucus that sniffs couldn't handle. She was beautiful. Now that I think about it, it makes sense that she's a witch. Witches are hot!

'Sure,' I replied in absolute curiosity. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Back at the hospital, Nurse Jeanette was carrying out a routine check-up on Evelyn Onan. The nurse's blue dress complemented the room's walls. The nurse sat down on a blue chair behind the door. The room was very quiet. The patient's face was pale but beautiful and expressionless. Her long lashes and pink lips complemented her smooth skin which was interrupted by a few wrinkles here and there. Even though she had been in a coma for a couple of months, she looked quite lively to the nurse who couldn't help but admire the lady. She wondered the patient's story. Nurse Jeanette was startled by the sound of the closing door. A young man who looked like he was in his early twenties just walked in. He was an inch taller than she was and wore a dark grey polo turtle neck sweater, a black leather jacket and black denim jeans. By the nurse's speculation, his shoes were men's size forty-three or forty-four. He looked rather tidy. His gentle dressing was in great contrast with his aura. He seemed strong and powerful in ways Jeanette could only phantom. His black hair was neatly combed and his dark eyelashes intensified the shade of his black eyes. This man looked like nothing she had ever seen before. She wondered if he was a celebrity as her eyes scanned him bashfully from his head to his feet. 'Good evening miss,' he smiled bringing Jeanette back to reality.

'Evening sir,' she said with a nervous smile.

'Be professional!' She cursed inwardly.

'Are you a relative of the patient or a friend perhaps?' Nurse Jeanette said tucking her coffee brown hair behind her right ear. She then noticed the bouquet of pink roses in the man's hand.

'I'm Damien,' he introduced himself courteously with his hand on his chest.

'…I'm a friend from a long time ago,' he added.

'Oh! I see. I'm Jeanette,' she cleared her throat.

'Should I notify her relatives? They're in town,' she blushed.

'That won't be necessary Miss…' he said taking her hand in his and then lightly kissing it.

'Jeanette,' she said in almost a whisper feeling his cold palm.

'How long has she been here?' he asked as he released her hand.

'About a couple of months,' Jeanette replied, her cheeks burning.

'Hmm,' his lips formed a thin line. He raised his eyebrows and then furrowing them. He looked like he had just realized something.

Damien left after placing the roses in a small blue vase by the window. The curtains were closed, so he opened them, giving the room more illumination.

'I'll be on my way,' he said with a nod and a faint smile before leaving.

'Damien,' Jeanette thought grinning from one ear to the other.

Jeanette had been single since her high school days. She had her first and so far, only boyfriend when she was fifteen. He was four years older and lived in the neighborhood. He wasn't anything teenagers thought of in their fantasies but at the time, he made her happy. She wondered why she thought of her nineteen year old boyfriend now. She immediately remembered having to dye her hair because she overheard him telling his younger sister that he liked blondes when the little girl was painting in her coloring book. That's how into him she was. Her parents thought she was being ridiculous. She signed at the thought of her bad luck being in a romantic relationship with the opposite gender. However, she didn't really know this Damien guy but he was worth a try. She was going to stalk him, she concluded as she bit her lower lip and had a tighter grip on the pen in her palm. It almost looked like her fist was clenched.

'I'm coming for you Damien,' she thought out loud, grinning from ear to ear and zoomed off after looking at the wall clock to make sure her shift was over.

'Now where'd he go?' she mumbled looking very determined. Her eyes scanned the hallway and they finally caught the watchman. Owing to the fact that Mrs. Onan was attacked, four skilled watchmen were hired by the hospital. They were recommended and approved by the police. Two of the men ran the morning shift while the other two ran the night shift. There was also a record of all the visitors and their phone numbers. This register was supposed to help with the investigation. Jeanette hoped she could get more than his first name from that. Unbothered about where the other watchman was, she walked up to the one in sight.

'Can I go through the register please,' she asked with a faint smile.

'Sure,' the man replied, turning the monitor to face her. She brought her phone from her purse. She was overly glad and was about to type when she realized Damien's phone number wasn't there. She was taken off guard. She scrolled through and even searched for 'Damien' but there was no record of him ever!

'The guy that just visited about…three, five minutes ago, why is there no record of him?'

'What guy?' The watchman asked seemingly confused.

'Tall, black hair, leather jacket?' she explained yearning for a positive reply from this man.

'No guy came in today. Her son Mike dropped by this afternoon though,' he said wondering what on Earth this nurse was talking about and why she needed to see the register. He had guarded that door ever since he got here and it definitely wasn't fun.

'Oh forget it!' she said pissed. She swiftly walked away grumbling like a child. When she got to the reception, she asked the receptionist and the lady apparently hadn't seen anyone with the description Jeanette gave. She furrowed her eyebrows and parted her lips to release a sigh in utter disappointment as she left the hospital. She boarded a cab to a nearby restaurant which she concluded had a nice décor and decided to mourn her unfortunate day with some ice cream.
