Chapter 46: I am selfish

**Big thanks to Luke Karls for your support**

A semblance of peace had returned as Arthor's tribe fully moved back into the lands he had reclaimed from his enemies.

With the people quickly moving to expand the place for everyone to fit in as well as preparing fortifications. The atmosphere in the clan though was a heavy one.

The forest of angels as people had began to call Arthor's work made all who glanced at it feel a shiver down their spine.

The people once had equal amounts of respect and fear for their chief but now fear was the one emotion that dominated their minds when the thought of Arthor 'the wing maker'

(A/N: This is simply one of the many titles Arthor will have before he obtains the final one that will define him throughout history)

The object of their horror sat before a weirwood tree, listening to the wind as it rustled the blood red leaves.

"Are you just going to stand there and stare at me". Arthor spoke up as he turned around to look at his father.

"You seemed deep in prayer, who am I to get between a man communicating with the gods"

"Prayer... I speak but I feel they do not want to talk back."

A small smile grew on Harwood's face at those words, "Many say the same thing I amongst them, but Shyra and your brother believe they do respond. Shyra claims they always talk to us and all we have to do is listen, truly listen."

"Hmm... I do not doubt they speak. I... I think I might have heard them before, but I wonder would they want to talk to me now."

Harwood went silent at that, he knew what his son was on about. Even he had lost the courage to look his son in the eye that day. "Why?"

It was but one word but it contained so many unsaid words, words that were not lost to either of the two.

The silence continued until Arthor decided to break it once more. "When I was young, when I gained understanding of the world I didn't have any lofty dreams to be honest."

Arthor began and Harwood remained silent, listening to his son speak. "Sure I dreamed of being the strongest warrior but which child did not. I did not want for the gold, I did not want for the women of the other tribes, I had no desires to wage war with the unworthy lords who believe themselves our rulers."

"I was content to live here, to be with all of you. I yearned to have a family of my own one day to continue to live a peaceful life with our belies full and our faces sore from laughter".

"Then they came... and I knew then and there that my dreams were the height of fantasy. Peace is nothing but the period that exists between one war and the next."

"I saw mother die, I saw her fight to her last breath. I watched Benjen pull that axe out of her hands, and later I swore and oath of vengeance and oath that has guided my path till now".

"As I draw ever so close to completing I find myself thinking, pondering am I in the right?"

"If that tribe hadn't arrived we would have gone to raid someone else. Some other child would watch as their mother died before their eyes, they would watch as the only world they new burnt around them."

"With all this I have come to an understanding, but I refuse said understanding because I am selfish. I am a selfish person, I only care for what belongs to me and none other..." determination filled Arthor's voice as he made it to his feet and walked so there was but an arms length between him and Harwood.

"I will fulfill my oath and any who stand in my way I will destroy. Do you hate me now father?"

Harwood burst out laughing at that, before grasping Arthor's shoulder. "Now why the hell will I do that? You are my son, and if this is the path you have chosen then I will help you see the end."

Arthor smiled at that, "thank you Father"

"Bah, none of that let us and go and eat. Lagertha is preparing some rabbit stew" Arthor did nothing but smile and follow after his father his heart set on what he was to do.
