Chapter 51: Theories and Theories

In the classroom, there were six people. Our group, Sergeant Kyle, and this other Sergeant whose name I didn't know. In front of the classroom, there were five assault rifles all lined up on top of a table. There was no magazine on it, but it was obvious what we would be taught today.

"Alright, at ease, meet Sergeant Gavil, today, he will teach you about basic weapon introduction. Sergeant Gavil, I'll leave my squad on you," Kyle said.

"Thank you, Sergeant Kyle, I'm Sergeant Gavil. Today, you'll be learning about this," Gavel showed the rifle to us. It was awfully familiar with Ranger Agna's rifle, but this rifle was much more modular in comparison. "This is M4A7 Assault Carbine. This will be your standard-issue weaponry. It's chambered in the usual 5.56x45 ammo. You'll be using this thing, anytime, every time, everywhere, so, familiarize yourself with it," he said.

I looked at the rifle. Compared to Agna's assault carbine, this rifle looked rather modern, by my standard. It has a full-length Picatinny rail, alongside a rifle scope. Yes, this rifle actually had a scope in comparison to Agna's assault carbine which still depended on the carry handle iron sight. So, this was how advanced this Vault military was, eh?

Gavil showed us the internal mechanism of the rifle, which I was already familiar with, considering that I spent most of my time using the NCR's M16A1 aka Service Rifle which was more or less equal to the M4A7 Assault Carbine that the Enclave used. However, I wondered how much improvement this AR had in comparison to those that the NCR used.

Considering that this thing had a rail system, a high-tech sight, and a bunch of places to place tactical customizations, this would be no doubt better than the NCR Assault Carbine. The improvement over 200 years must be significant, right? It might use some next-grade metal alloy that I didn't have any idea about.

"Anyway, you must be familiar with the bullets used by us, but since Rockwell is here, I'll do a minor reintroduction," he said as he picked up the bullet from the table in the classroom. "This is our standard issue bullet, 5.56x45 mm. Enclave used M885A1 ammunition, not an FMJ, and would have no problem penetrating basic ballistic protection."

Quite unsurprising that the Enclave would use something that I'd normally call AP ammunition for its venture. Then again, this was the remnant of the most advanced vault that the United States managed until today's date.

If this was what they trusted a wasteland with, I wondered what kind of ammunition a special operation force of the Enclave would use, probably something with much more power, like the regular .308 ammunition that NCR sniper used, I didn't know, probably that would be the case unless Enclave adopted the same ammunition as my old world.

"Now, to familiarize yourself with it, I'll give every single one of you a rifle," Gavil said.

He gave every single one of us a rifle. It was lighter than the NCR Service Rifle that I usually used to kill legionaries. However, it didn't feel less rugged than the NCR Service Rifle, heck, it seemed that every single part of this rifle was made with precision and accuracy. I felt that every single spare part that I held was made with quality manufacturing material.

The rifle looked fully customizable as well, with its quad-rail handguard alongside the option to attach a muzzle device at the end of it. Overall, head and shoulder above both NCR Service Rifle or NCR Assault Carbine.

"Anyway, you already know the basics of weapon operation, and I acknowledge that Private Rockwell has more combat experience than the three of you combined," he said, suddenly, not surprising the other students, though, considering that most of them knew me as the person that slaughtered the entire legion encampment with the help of NCR rangers.

"Thank you, sir," I said.

"Anyway, I hope you are familiar with the weapon system. Today, you'll be learning basic weapon cleaning and all of the things. Now, pay attention!"

It was eight in the evening, and today's training was what I pretty much expected. The class didn't end at weapon training, but also basic land navigation, basic infantry drills, and all sorts of stuff you pretty much would expect from the Enclave. The thing was, after that classroom, I didn't expect we would be taken around the training yard to run around with rifles in our hands while being shouted at by Sergeant Kyle.

Also, not to mention the bonus 100x push-ups that we got for a little mistake that Herbert did during training, which was accidentally dropping his rifle to the ground. After that, there was another bonus of 50x push-ups from the lack of understanding of land navigation.

"How was today?" Kohler asked as he came out of the bathroom with his bald head wet.

"Could be worse," I sighed, truth be told, I wasn't used to the lifestyle yet.

"Don't worry, you'll get through it. Anyway, take a shower, then take sleep. You don't know whether there would be a surprise again, don't you think?" Kohler said.

"I agree."

I took a pair of clean clothing and went to the bathroom to take a shower. It was comfortable after all sweaty and the drizzle of cold water was just perfect. After that, I went back to the barrack all dressed in the sleeping fatigue.

I was the last one to take a shower. The other had done so earlier, unsurprisingly. Alright, that was one day, there would be the next day and the next day. Still, I wondered whether the NCR military was trained this well or not. The Legion must have used harsher, but meaningless training like slashing your friend with a machete. That was expected in the Legion.

"Hey, Rockwell, what's the world above look like? We watch several documentaries, but what does it look like?" Callahan asked.

How to say it? It was definitely not a comfortable place, but it wasn't exactly a radioactive wasteland without any hope considering some settlements were popping right and left alongside NCR trying to establish law and order in the region. Still, the Legion had the same exact goal, but in a much more brutal way.

"Weird. The world outside is weird if I have to say about it. Not that dangerous of a place, unless you are trying to make a war with a major faction," I said.

"Major faction? Like the NCR and the Legion?" Callahan asked.

"Yeah, like that."

"I agree. The NCR outnumbers us by 100 times. I'm afraid that our advantage wouldn't be enough to fight them in a peer-to-peer conflict. We must be discreet, if not diplomatic enough with them. We might win the battle, but we won't win the war," Kohler said.

True enough, it seemed that the NCR's ability to perform logistics was pretty much laughable, and their regular soldiers' morale would make the Legion roll from laughter in the ground. The Enclave would make quick work with both factions only if it had enough military personnel. Right now, it didn't have enough.

"Go to sleep, the sergeant might have a surprise for us."

I agreed with that and went to sleep in my bunk bed.
