Chapter 2: Adam

~~~~~
Adam Smith.
Yeah...that was his name for as long as he remembered.
Born on 15 January 2069 in San Francisco, California. A cute baby boy was born in an impoverished household, in the countryside, far from the busy city life. And inside a small hospital, lay a mother and son duo. The mother smiled every time she would breastfeed her baby and caressed his small head. However, one person was missing. That is, the baby's father. And whenever her eyes wandered across the empty hospital room, trying to find her partner, her eyes filled with tears.
She was lonely. Alone and deserted.
However, she held onto her tears as she knew that her cynical partner would not be present here, even for the birth of his child. Why would he anyway? He would rather spend his time fucking whores, right.
But looking at her son, she smiles as she saw the light in him. Her hope!Hope for a better life with him!Hope that this boy would support her in need!
But all hope came crashing down when the boy was diagnosed with Becker-type muscular dystrophy at the age of 5.
And what happened next was pretty much a standard by 2069.
The father dumped his family and went on to start another one in Nevada. The mother was devastated and started finding solace in alcohol abuse. The children of the localities started picking on the child, calling him names such as 'Uggo' or 'Wheelchair goblin'. And so on.
Even their relatives refused to take the mother and son duo into their care. But all while undergoing such abandonment and cruelty, the mother, not even once cursed at him for being her son. She chose him over the entire world and always took care of his needs.
And, by then, everyone left the mother and son to fend for themselves. His mother dreamed of glory. His bright future. Everything was seemingly gone for the boy named Adam, all at the tender age of 5. And coincidentally, it was just a year later that the cure for Muscular Dystrophy was invented!
But even then, the high price of undergoing such a procedure prevented the young boy named Adam from ever functioning as a normal human being.
He was already 7 years old by then and his mother had finally landed a job at a local retail store, much to her dilemma. But in the past two years, his condition significantly deteriorated. As a result, his mother finally had to sign a bond with a pharmaceutical company to let him undergo experiments.
It was not as if she dumped him as well. It was in fact, his own decision to join them. He was mature enough, even at the age of 7, that something was wrong with him. As soon as she heard that her child would be experimented upon, the mother started crying, staining his hospital gown with tears and snot.
Even at the age of 7, he was mature enough to understand his situation far better than any other 10-year-old kid. He knew they were poor.No one, except for his mother loved him. And he couldn't help but notice the dark eyes bags from insomnia and her frail body swaying every time she returned home from work.
As a result, he was admitted to a High profile hospital as a test subject. And that was when he had lost all hope of ever recovering.
But, as the saying goes, 'Talent and love can only be found in the moment of distress or when everyone has lost hope; that is, during the war '
He was found as well. Not as love. But as talent!
It all started when a middle-aged man named Dr Issac Norton, a Scientist, in charge of developing a cure for Muscular Dystrophy, saw him solving a 10th-standard Mathematical question with ease.
Adam, a 10-year-old, uneducated boy who never even visited kindergarten, had solved a 10th-standard question with the minimum amount of knowledge he was bestowed upon!
God had finally shown mercy!
It was not that all he did was lay down in the hospital and laze around. Adam, along with 8 other test subjects was provided with many other facilities including education, Craftmanship and much more because most volunteers were from very poor backgrounds, similar to that of Adam.
There were provided with the best teachers for their schooling. The Scientists and Doctors alike interacted with them and taught them to their heart's content.
Someone might think that providing high-class education to such physically disabled children was a lost cause but the doctors and Scientists thought otherwise as it was these children that needed the education the most, as it was possible that they might not live after the experiments were over and if by chance they had survived, this education they would receive would at least help them fend for themselves.
So when such apt conditions for acquiring an education were provided, Adam didn't hesitate and did his best in learning all types of knowledge he could acquire. From learning woodcraft to playing the violin.From art to forging.And finally, from Physics to Geo-Political Geography and History. His adolescent yet hungry brain desperately soaked every chunk of knowledge he could acquire.
It was only after a year, during their IQ test, did he come to realise that he had a whopping 190 IQ points in his little brain!
For the first time, he felt he was special and to his astonishment, Dr Issac, who was in charge of his education was the first person to realize, he was a genius!
And from then onwards, the next 20 years were pretty much easy.
After 8 years of testing, the cure for Muscular Dystrophy was finally done testing on humans but unfortunately, Adam, out of the 8 other children, was the only one who was not cured.
His mother was devastated but when she heard that her son was a genius, she was genuinely happy.
Dr Issac had approached his mother to groom him into a man of Science. The overjoyed, 40-year-old woman, rejoiced as she jumped up and down when she heard it, teardrops staining her shrivelled-up face.
And just like that, Adam, under the mentorship of Dr Issac, became a disabled yet genius, Scientist at the age of 25.
By this time, Adam's mind was so sharp that, space stations all over the world were drooling over this monstrous prodigy.
He was the one who perfected the cure for Muscular Dystrophy as the previous version was only applicable for the Duchene type and not the Becker type, all at the age of 21.
And from there, he delved deep into astrophysics and put his heart and soul into studying cosmic space and its associated energy.
It was also during this time that Adam noticed the budding relationship between Dr Issac and his mother. And by the time he was 24, both middle-aged couples were married.
His mother was apprehensive at first and scared of marrying for the second time, but the subtle push of assurance Adam gave his mother, helped her gather up the courage to give it a second try to love. But just 5 years later, the Meteor had to hit the surface of the Earth and mark the end of his peaceful days.
And that was when, Adam who specialized in human Biology and Astrophysics was called forth, along with Dr Issac to oversee the project,[CRYENGINE 1.0].
But unfortunately, they failed to successfully incorporate the project for every single human being. And it was not until the 23rd of December 2099, that the procedure for Cryopreservation was finally complete.
~~~~~

[24th December 2099]::[11:44 PM, Tuesday]

Inside a Highly advanced Space station circulating the Orbit of the Earth.

Sounds of agitated sirens echoed through the otherwise filled hallways of the entire spacecraft. People ran towards their respective Escape pods in a hurry, trying to escape the forthcoming calamity and just be with their respective families before the destruction of the Earth began.

But, when all the other scientists and staff members ran away a grey-haired scientist and a lanky figure in a wheelchair sat in front of a massive tower inside a large, isolated room.

Both the individuals just stared at the tower, from which 8 individuals, 5 males and 3 females, could be seen floating inside a pod-like structure filled with a characteristic blue-coloured liquid. Numerous wires were twisted and tangled, plunging inside them which came in and out of their bodies along with characteristic face masks covering their sleepy faces.

Starting intensely at the tower filled with such individuals, the man sitting in a wheelchair said in a calm voice.

"It's finally done, isn't it?"

"Yes, it is", said the man beside him.

Adam turned his head with great difficulty, looking up at his mentor with a questioning gaze as he asked.

" Mom's dead..."

"Yes...."

Hearing the man's voice Adam sighed as he focused again on the massive tower which was pointed towards the Earth, ready to be ejected into the cosmos.

"She didn't suffer, did she?", muttered Adam keeping his head down.

Hearing his sons muttering, the man clenched his fists " No. She perished peacefully", said the man all the while looking at the massive tower.

Adam and his father, Issac closed their eyes, both of them reliving the memories of past years of tranquillity with the said mother and wife, before abruptly opening them, collectively agreeing on focusing on the tower in front of them.

"Beautiful, isn't she?" said Adam.

But unlike the previous times, the man didn't answer his son's query, instead for the very first time he cocked his head towards the man sitting in the wheelchair.

Black eyelashes adorned his bright, Sapphire-like blue eyes along with a chiselled yet lanky face, a pointy nose, angular eyebrows and thin lips. The man sitting in the wheelchair was undoubtedly a handsome man.

But unfortunately, he was not the most handsome of the men of 2099 as it was all a late-stage genetic modification could do to a man in his 20s.In this era, he could at most be considered average. However, if one were to see this same boy 10 years ago, no one would claim that he was a good-looking man. Such was his condition.

Looking at him, Issac gently pressed his hands on Adam's lanky shoulder and said in a grave tone bringing his bearded face near his ears,

" Are you sure? We can look for any other alternatives. Can't we?"

But instead of answering him, Adam, sitting in a highly mechanized wheelchair pressed a button on it as the tower spun abruptly revealing another yet empty Pod.

With a swishing sound, the pod gently opened, revealing its spacious room as a burst of chilled air flowed over him, fluttering his long, black hair.

Revealing a small grin on his thin lips, Adam cocked his head towards his father, looking straight into his grey eyes and saying with unnatural vigour and determination.

"Absolutely..."
