Chapter 1: Chapter 1 (edited)

Inside a room devoid of light a boy could be heard complaining.

"Why can't I just sleep!" The boy questioned himself. It would look rather silly if someone was watching him but fortunately he was alone in the room. But it took only a glance to tell he was tired, his eyebags darker than the room in which he stayed. Without warning the boy took out a mobile device causing a great light to flood the room. As the boy's eyes adjusted a number appeared on the screen "4:01, that explains why it's so dark outside." The boy sighed and started fidgeting with the device. As time passed he got more engrossed in the strange device.

*BEEP*

A sudden sound jolted him out of bed.

"Rise and Shine Ray, It's your first day of high school." A robotic voice notified him. He tried to ignore it but it kept repeating with that same dull voice.

"Alexa, Stop." He finally muttered. And as if it had been waiting for him to say that, any and all sounds coming from that strange machine on his desk ceased. The boy finally stood up revealing a quite fit body. He was around 190 cm and he clearly was an advocate for fitness. His medium-length black hair was a mess from tossing and turning all night. The boy slowly made his way towards the door to leave his room when a small girl burst through the door.

"Brother needs to take a shower he smells nasty." The young girl giggled.

"Shut it summer, Why are you up so early anyway?" Ray retorted A 6-year-old shouldn't be up at 5 am.

"It's my first day of first grade silly!" Summer eagerly replied. It was then that the realization finally hit Ray, School was starting again and he wasted the whole night playing on his phone.

"Go brush your teeth and get change your clothes I'll cook breakfast after I get done showering" Ray instructed before quickly rushing into his bathroom.

Ever since his father had gone to Europe for a business trip he'd taken care of his sister. Although it had been only a week since his father departed and he would be back in two days Ray was very busy. From working out and playing with his very needy sister, Strangely Ray found comfort in the chaos. But now he had school to deal with. Fortunately he could drop her off at her school's daycare but it was quite the walk. Snapping out of his thoughts Ray quickly finished showering and dried off.

"Almost done" Ray yelled from his room. He quickly changed and went to the dining area to see Summer playing on her little pink Ipad.

"What do you want for breakfast?" Ray questioned. Summer didn't reply, her eyes glued to the screen. Ray sighed and got a box of off-brand cereal from the pantry.

"No, I want the tasty ones" Summer pleaded.

"Relax these are for me" The boy laughed. He filled a bowl with the 'Healthy' cereal and then got out another bowl along with milk and a colorful cereal box.

"Yayyy" Summer excitedly yelped as her brother gave her a bowl of cereal.

"Enjoy, as soon as you finish we have to get going, The daycare is quite a ways away," Ray said drowsily, after all, he hadn't slept a wink all night. While Summer happily ate her cereal Ray took out his phone and picked at his cereal as he scrolled on social media. Before he knew it, Summer was done and skipping around waiting for him. Without finishing his bowl he picked up her backpack and led her out the door.

"Are you okay?" Ray asked Summer as she walked drowsily, She had woken up all on her own and now was walking a few miles to get to school. Normally she'd ride the bus she wanted to go to daycare on the first day so she could meet her new friends. Ray casually picked her up and put her on his back. He didn't mind much and she fell asleep within a minute or two. Ray placed a headphone into his ear and zoned out as he walked to the daycare. After maybe 20 minutes he finally arrived.

"Summer, we're here" Ray whispered.

She jolted up, a huge smile plastered on her face. She quickly squirmed off of his back and ran into the building. Ray followed her in and went up to a woman that looked very tired. Could you blame her? she was up at 6 am dealing with elementary schoolers.

"Hello ma'am, I'm here to drop off my little sister," Ray exclaimed in an attempt to be as respectful as possible.

"Are you her legal parent or guardian?" The old lady replied in a melodramatic tone.

"Ah I'm her guardian while our parents are away" Ray casually replied.

"Do you have proof that you're her guardian?" The lady asked in a bored tone.

Ray started to get annoyed with her after the 3rd question and decided to drown all the questions out replying with yes from time to time. Before he knew it he was on his way to his school, He was supposed to go to the bus stop but he was closer to his school than the bus stop so he decided to walk. After maybe 15 minutes a huge building entered his sight, It was at least 5 stories tall and he couldn't begin to calculate the sheer size of the school. He couldn't begin to imagine how he was going to make it to class on time. After his initial shock, he noticed hordes of kids standing at the gate.

"Huh? He gasped. He'd never seen something like this, students were conversing with each other and some were already butting heads with each other. Checking his phone he saw that school wouldn't start for another 10 minutes. The group of kids he saw easily numbered in the hundreds and there were still plenty of kids that rode the bus.

"What can you expect from the most prestigious school in Florida" Ray sighed. He'd hoped for an easy year but even someone as dense as him could tell, That this would be the strangest year he'd ever experienced.
