Chapter 93: Looking For Answers

Vanir walks over, looking me over with concern before saying, "I'm glad you're here, we need to talk." I nod in agreement as Lolan, the female council member walks over, looking me over with wonder as she asks, "How are you feeling? Did you just return?"

I give her a polite smile before saying, "I haven't been here for long but yes, I'm well thank you, Lolan." She nods and says, "Don't push yourself, you just got back. Rest if you need to." I nod as Vanir clears his throat saying, "I need to speak with you in private."

I smile at Lolan once more before turning and following Vanir out of the Council room. We silently walk down a long hallway as several others step to the side to stare and whisper. I'm sure everyone has now heard about my disappearance and the mysteries sounding it.

Once we reach Vanir's office, he applies his magic to the door before opening it. The room recognizes its owner, greeting him with warm lights and lighting the fireplace. As soon as I step into the room, the door swings shut, and a soundproof rune engages.

He spins around and quickly asks, "Who told you, you were adopted?" I give him a small smile while walking over to the oversized chair and sitting down. I lean my head back as I softly say, "I missed plush chairs like this. All they have are wooden chairs."

Vanir sighs while walking over to his desk. He leans against it, watching me with concern as he asks, "What's happened, Lyra? Speak to me." I tilt my head, looking at him with a small smile as I say, "A lot has happened, but I feel like this is a little backward. I should be asking you what happened and telling you to speak to me, right?"

He grabs the bridge of his nose and says, "Yes, you're adopted but your parents and your grandfather loved you more than anything else in the world. They thought of you as their own." I slightly nod and say, "I know, that's not what I'm trying to figure out."

He frowns at me, slightly confused before asking, "Are you wondering who your real parents are?" I watch him closely as I nod my head in agreement. He sighs and says, "I wish I could tell you child, but you were a mystery from the very beginning. Your parents couldn't have children and were saddened by the fact but one night you were placed on their doorstep with no note, nothing."

I frown watching him. He was telling the truth. As far as he knows, I showed up on the doorsteps like a lost kitten. Had my parents or grandfather known and just chose to keep it a secret or was I seriously dropped off at the door like an amazon package?

I sigh, leaning my head all the way back with my eyes closed. I didn't want to, but I have a feeling I'm going to have to go back and speak with that woman again. She seems to have the missing pieces I'm looking for. I had just wished to cut ties with the woman and never go back but it looks like that won't be the case.

When I open my eyes, I look up at the grand wooden ceiling and ask, "And the Council memebers? Have you made any progress regarding that?" Vanir sighs before saying, "Lyra, you just found out you were adopted... It's okay to be upset and need time. Leave the Council to me."

I chuckle a little before saying, "Oh, I'm not upset for the reasons you think, and dealing with the Council is exactly what I need to do right now. What have you heard about Aiya's parents?" Vanir blinks in surprise before saying, "They disappeared three nights ago. The entire house looks like it's been abandoned. I had my doubts about their hand in all this but... their actions say otherwise."

I nod in agreement before saying, "I'm almost a hundred percent positive they had a hand in everything that Aiya did. If I'm correct, they were the driving force behind her." I sit up straight, looking towards the dark window before saying, "Try and flush out the Council member or members. I'm going to hunt down Aiya's parents."

Vanir's eyes grow large as he gapes, "Whaaaat!? You're going to hunt them down? That's dangerous! They could hurt you!" I give him a dark smile as I say, "They missed their chance to do that. Now it's my turn."

Vanir sputters, looking for a way to talk me out of it as he says, "I'm serious, Lyra! They could be lying in wait for you! If they're dabbling in dark magic, they could hurt you or much worse, kill you!" I nod my head in understanding before saying, "Aiya caught me by surprise because I trusted her. I won't be making the same mistake twice."

Vanir groans, knowing that he won't be talking me out of it, and resigns. He rubs his temples as he says, "At least take some guardians with you. It's dangerous out in the human world. Other supernatural beings are always preying on Witches and Warlocks."

I shake my head as I say, "I want to move quickly and unnoticed. If I bring a whole group of burly men, I will stick out like a sore thumb." Vanir raises his finger and says, "Then one, take at least one with you. Please, for me."

I sigh and reluctantly nod my head. Vanir beams at me before walking over to his desk. He opens a drawer and digs around for a moment before pulling out a small slip of paper. He rips the paper in half and within a few moments, the air in the office swirls.

A dark figure appears in the room before Vanir. He lifts his fist and places it over his heart as he asks, "You've called upon me sir?" Vanir gives him a large smile before pointing to me and saying, "Yes, I want you to protect her when she goes to the human world."

The man turns around and glances at me, slightly nodding before looking back to Vanir and saying, "I will ensure her safety. You have my word." Vanir nods in approval as I stand and say, "I hope you're ready because I'm leaving now."

Vanir's face drops as he asks, "Now? Like right now? Didn't you just get back? You should at least sleep for a night before starting." I shake my head and say, "I'm losing time. They left three days ago. If I don't leave now, I will lose their trail and it will take twice as long to find them. I don't want to give them the opportunity to set up and do something annoying."

Vanir wants to argue but he knows he can't. He deflates a little before saying, "Just be careful, child. Even humans can be dangerous." I nod with a small smile as I say, "You don't have to worry, Vanir. I will clean up this mess and come back to take care of the one remaining here."

He sighs helplessly, waving me off. I smirk while standing up. I turn, lifting my hand and instantly opening the door to the human world with my magic. I turn to the guardian and say, "After you." His green eyes watch me intently before stepping through without a word.

Charming.

I give Vanir a knowing look and he returns it with a sheepish grin while saying, "Aston is the strongest. He may be lacking in social skills, but he'll keep you safe and alive." I purse my lips, nod, and wave to him before stepping through the magical door.
