Chapter 8: Chapter Seven

Have you ever woken up feeling like you have just been hit by a bus? That was how Eve was feeling. She could still feel her head banging. Too much was happening in her life at that time. And she barely had the chance to process it all.

"You are awake." She heard his annoying voice. She was still not happy with how he had been treating her.

"What are you doing in my room?" she groaned in pain as she sat up. It felt like the world was spinning again.

"Easy, there." He sat by her side and helped her sit up comfortably. With a hand at her back, positioning a pillow, he brought his other hand to adjust her hair that had formed a knot at her back.

"Don't touch me!" she swat his hand away. He gave her a look before leaving her alone.

"Your pendant. We need to use it and break the curse quickly. " he blurted out.

" What curse? " Eve looked at him confused.

"The curse some cruel fae put on you."

" I don't understand. is that what is giving me this headache now?"

" That is only part of the curse. " He held my gaze unwavering. There was this sort of tension in the air that made Eve realise that that was not the only bad news he had. There was more.

" Don't worry, you didn't take the worst part of the curse. I did."

The confusion was evident on Eve's face. She was not sure how the curse worked. She believed she had not done anything wrong to be cursed.

"I am your guardian. So, naturally any curse on you affects me first."

"I don't understand this. is there some kind of spooky bond between us?"

"Spooky bond..." He chuckled. He brought himself closer to Eve. His face was barely a few Inches away from hers. He looked at her like he could read her thoughts.

Eve wondered how she had been bonded with this man in front of her. When and how did the bond form? Did it mean that she was forever stuck with him? What kind of bond was it anyway? Could read her thoughts? With the intensity he was staring at her, it was possible he was hearing her thoughts. Eve panicked at that thought.

"What kind of bond is it?" Eve found herself asking him.

"It doesn't have a name. In Faeland, when a child is born to the royal family...." He whispered like he was sharing a secret. "...they set their soul string free. That is a risky tradition if you ask me." His fingers caressed her hair, untangling the little knots that had formed on her hair. "They allow the soul string choose a guardian for their child. So, yes. We bonded for all of eternity. Get used to it." He suddenly pulled away from her.

Eve gasped. Did he just read her mind?

"Jane, I can only read your mind because you feeling an extreme emotion right now. You practically scared. It is supposed to help me know when you are in trouble or something. "

Eve was speechless.

"We need to use the pendant quickly to break the curse. As much as I enjoy the speed that comes with being a creature of the night, I prefer my original form. "

"Here it is." Evelyn brought out her pendant. "What do we do to break the curse?"

Hours later and nothing worked. "I don't understand. Why is it not working?"

"Maybe you should ask that grandmother of your. She is an expert in curses and spells."

He was right about that. Grandma Martha had erased her memories after all. You had to be an expert to do that.

Grandma Martha

She might know. Eve thought. Her grandma would know what was wrong. She would also know if anything Andrew said was true. If it was true, she would have to come to terms that all these madness going on in her life was real. Then fairies were real and those dreams of hers were simply her memories returning.

Eve left her room, looking for Grandma Martha in the study. She was not there. She asked a maid and find out that she was in the library.

The library was kind of dark, so spotting her grandma was difficult.

"Grandma?" she called out.

Silence.

"Grandma!"

"I'm right here, pumpkin" she responded as she adjusted her clothes. She looks uncoordinated like she was just waking up from sleep. She looked really exhausted. Eve considered asking her later. Her grandma had been through a lot. Rest was what she needed not disturbance.

But Eve needed to know.

"What's it, pumpkin? Sit here" she said pointing to the seat close to her.

"Well..." Eve started reluctantly as she took her seat. She was not sure if it was because was scared of what her answer would be or the probability that fairies and witches might be real and she might be one of them or the possibility of staying cursed forever. "....I just wanted to clarify something."

"What's it, dear?"

" Who's James Crystal?" I needed to hear it from her.

"Where did you hear that name?" She had that shocked expression. Eve had a feeling her grandma was going to deny it.

"Nowhere. Who's he?"

"I don't know any James Crystal" she said dismissively., looking straight at me like I was the crazy one.

"Really....So I don't have a brother and a sister somewhere?"

"Of course not, Eve" now she looked disturbed. She had stopped using endearment on her. No pumpkin or dear. It was now Eve.

"Don't lie to me, Grandma. I know the truth." Eve snapped. She hated living in the dark. And it turned out that was how she had been living for most of her life. Her grandma's reaction to the name proves said it all. She knew. And she was lying.

Eve stared at her as tears threatened to fall. She shaked her head, contemplating what to say next.

"Seems you're recovering your memory. When did the spell start wearing off" she asked Eve, her eyes on anywhere but her.

Memory?

"I'm sorry pumpkin. We just wanted to keep you safe. That was why we erased your memory and brought you here" she explained

He was right. Mr C&C was right. Her memory was erased.

"Keep me safe from what? Sir Greenfield? News flash, he found us, killed dad and stabbed mom. We are not sure if she's alive and now, he's looking for me!"
