Chapter 498: Sirius the Silent

"Of course. Why would I lie to you?" Ivan nodded as Kreacher looked at him expectantly.

The house-elf's lips moved and his large eyes filled with tears, but then he remembered the charm of the locket and screamed in disbelief.

"Impossible! Kreacher tried everything. He threw it in the furnace and smashed it with a hammer. Not even a destructive spell could hurt it!"

"I know!" Ivan interrupted Kreacher. "It's the same with everything else left behind by the Dark Arts. It takes some special means to destroy it."

He was, of course, well aware of how difficult it was to destroy a Horcrux, and that only a few things, such as fire and basilisk fangs, could do so.

More importantly, the locket was inscribed with protective runes, presumably by Slytherin.

The Horcrux was hidden inside the locket, and to destroy it one would have to either open the locket in Parseltongue or face the protection that Slytherin had left behind.

Ivan was impressed by how well Voldemort had protected his Horcruxes.

For example, placing Ravenclaw's diadem in the Room of Requirement's storeroom was akin to throwing a grain of sand into the desert.

Hufflepuff's golden cup was kept at Gringotts, and it was clear that Voldemort was using Gringotts, the "safest" place in the wizarding world, to guard his Horcruxes.

If not for Harry's Horcrux Sensor, it would have been extremely difficult to find these Horcruxes.

However, this was not the case for an "insider" like him, who considered most of Voldemort's tricks to be non-existent.

Seeing Ivan's confidence, Kreacher began to believe him.

'Hold on, you've got me confused, you've got to tell me why you want to destroy what Regulus left behind, right?' Sirius said, frowning at Kreacher.

However, the house-elf only nagged Master Regulus to destroy the locket.

"What are your orders, Kreacher? Not to speak of them to everyone? Or to some people?" Lupin ventured, suddenly thinking of the rules of house-elves.

Kreacher looked at Sirius and said nothing, and the crowd understood.

"Sirius, I think you'll have to excuse us. Kreacher's orders from Regulus are not to tell the Blacks about this," Ivan said.

Sirius was not happy that he was the one who should know the truth.

Before Sirius could retort, Ivan shot him a look and mouthed the words "Phantom Curse", which Sirius understood and promptly left.

Ivan waited for Sirius to return before turning to Kreacher. "Can you talk now?" he asked.

Kreacher, completely unaware of Ivan and his gang's machinations and completely in the dark, assumed that Sirius had left, and told them everything that had happened in the past.

When Sirius abandoned his pure-blood beliefs at the age of sixteen, his mother was heartbroken, and other pure-blood families began to gossip about the Black family.

Regulus joined the Dark Lord's organisation as an honourable Death Eater in order to please his family and restore his family's reputation!

This was because the Dark Lord's ideals pleased all of the pure-blood families and even some of the half-bloods.

After all, wizards have magical powers that allow them to fool around with Muggles as they please, and are forced by the Ministry of Magic to hide within the wizarding community, much to the displeasure of many wizards, who want to change that!

The Dark Lord was their hope for change!

Because Voldemort promised them that once they were in charge of the wizarding community, all wizards would be able to perform magic freely, even ruling over all Muggle and Muggle descendants…

"So Regulus also felt that wizards should rule over Muggles and agree with Voldemort?" Harry couldn't resist interrupting Kreacher.

"Master Regulus says that the rivalry between wizards and Muggles will only grow, and either the Muggles will rise above the wizards, or the wizards will rise above the Muggles … and we can only postpone that day, with no possibility of mitigation!" Kreacher said, his eyes wide and sobbing.

"How is that possible? We're living a good life!

Wizards stay in the wizarding world, they have their own way of life, Muggles have their own way of living, they don't bother each other, and everyone would be fine without Lord Voldemort!" Harry retorted.

Lupin opened his mouth to speak, but stopped, and Ivan tried to disagree with Kreacher, but then fell silent.

Can Muggles and wizards really be at peace forever?

Would a wizard with magical powers be willing to live in peace with ordinary people? Without superior thought?

Would Muggles, by contrast, allow a dangerous minority of wizards who could fool and purge their memories to exist?

Ivan didn't know the answer and didn't want to dwell on it.

Kreacher ignored Harry's remark and continued angrily.

"Master Regulus, unlike the bad boy, knew exactly what the name Black and his pure blood meant."

Apparently, it blamed Sirius for Regulus's death.

Sirius, who had been hiding in the shadows using the Disillusionment Charm, fell silent at Kreacher's words.

He ran away from home with alacrity, but he did forget the impact of his decision as the eldest son of the Black family, and the pressure he had to bear as the second son…

"Then what? How did he get the locket, what was it for, and why did he destroy it?" Lupin asked.

"A year after Master Regulus joined the Dark Lord, he came to the kitchens to see Kreacher. He said to Kreacher… said…" the elderly house-elf shrieked. "He said the Dark Lord wanted an elf!"

"Voldemort wants a pixie? Why?" Harry was baffled, as was Lupin.

"Oh, yes!" Kreacher looked pained. "It is an honour for Master Regulus to contribute to Kreacher's cause, and Kreacher must do as he is told!"

Kreacher kept shaking his head, his breathing turning into sobs, but he slowly recounted his experience…
