The witch General Adelman brought was his age, an old friend who had been with the General since the first war General Adelman fought in. When the witch learned that General Adelman was bringing a witch to the capital, she recommended herself. The recommendation was accepted by General Adelman as a Knight of the Fortress of Varden.

"I am glad that the witch participating in this investigation is you, Guren!"

The witch, Guren, who had not removed the hood of his cloak after entering the king's palace, just nodded.

"You brought the book to compare cases, didn't you?" Adelman asked again.

Guren still did not answer, only nodding his head in response to Adelman's question. "I hope he's not a superior being! It would be difficult if 'they' became superior humans!" Guren's voice was more like a murmur that only she could hear.

Adelman had known Guren since she first understood what the witch-turned-friend meant.
