Chapter 11: Chapter 10

The phone rang for a few seconds.

Her mom picked up.

"Yes, Brynn, what is it?"

"M-mom it's Stolen." Brynn sighed, her hands shaking. "His leg got caught in an electric wire, god knows how. It's bad, he got stitches but requires vet attention for a while longer. I called to ask whether we should take him to the vet's boarding barn, or keep him here."

Her mother paused on the other side of the phone.

"How much is the boarding?" Her mother replied.

"Greyson said he can cover it, but I don't want him to." Brynn continued. "It's 100 a day, and Stolen will need to be there for at least a month..."

"So 3,000?" Her mom asked, after going over the math fast in her head.

"Yes, I can use the money I got from the winnings-" Greyson cut her off.

"Please, Brynn, tell your mother it's fine! I don't mind one bit, plus you have Salem to worry about as well." Brynn found it strange her main horse had got injured two days after she had gotten to lease another.

"Babe no." She put her mother on mute. "You don't need to pay. I won't let you." Brynn argued back.

"Calm down, please let me." Greyson begged.

"You're acting like this is your fault." Brynn sighed. It had been 3 days since the Longines show, and the most chaotic days of her life. After the accusation, Greyon was quiet. He didn't speak for a good 3 minutes. By that point, Brynn's mom hung up. Millions of things were going through her head, but mainly, she didn't want to say what she was thinking. If Greyson took it the wrong way, what they had would be gone.

"Don't worry, I was kidding." Brynn laughed. Her laugh was more, well, forced. She was still suspicious. There was a chance either he did something, or knew someone who did that to Stolen.

"I got to finish up with Salem," Brynn said, and walked away. Brynn was thinking, maybe she should take Salem on the trails. She knew her horse needed her, but really needed some fresh air. Plus, it would be good for Salem to get desensitized to nature a bit.

"Hey Felix," Brynn shouted. Felix came, like a dog.

"Yes Ma'am." He reported. He always had this funny way of speaking, like Brynn was an Empress.

"Do we have an English trail saddle that would fit Salem?" She asked. Felix sprinted to the tack room. 3 minutes later, he ran back and confirmed Brynn's suspicions. There were no English trail saddles. Brynn sighed. She started walking.

"Add that to the list, Felix," She continued. "And add a saddle pad and half bad that will fit." As Brynn walked, Felix hurried to stay with her, while writing down a list in her scraggly handwriting only few could read.

"Also, add a new gel-pad for Salem, some boots, and nice white dressage gloves for me, size 4." She paused while Felix finished scribbling stuff down.

"You can take your leave for the day, leave the list on Stolen's cork board." Brynn rubbed her hands over her face as Felix scurried away.

"Hey Hannah!" Brynn shouted. She was just mounting Salem again to finish her practice and go for a trail ride.

"Yes Ma'am?" Hannah said, walking out from the tack room.

"Can you email the HCT formally that I won't be able to compete in the Hampton Classic?" Brynn asked.

"Yes Ma'am" Hannah turned to leave.

"Oh, and." Brynn continued. Hannah stopped walking. "Ask Greyson to come along if you can't find him." Brynn smiled. Then, Hannah actually left.

Brynn trotted Salem in a normal lesson trot around the arena to warm her up again. If she wasn't constantly moving, Salem would just stop and refuse to move. It was extremely frustrating for a dressage horse.

'I need a vacation' Brynn thought. It had been a hectic 3 days, from the Longines show to prom, school, Salem's contract, and Stolen's injury, Brynn barely had time to blink.

After 8 minutes of running laps in the arena to warm up, Greyson finally emerged from the door of the indoor arena with Confident Lair in a nice English trail saddle.

'Of course he has one,' Brynn grumbled in her head.

"You called for me?" He asked, as if nothing happened between the two. Brynn was still suspicious of him.

"Yeah, let's go on a trail." Brynn suggested. She patted Salem for being a good girl and waiting for her in the arena by herself. Greyson nodded.

'It's only been THREE days' Brynn thought. 'Three days and we have already got into an argument.'

Brynn put on a sweet smile. She covered her hands with her gloves. Greyson watched her put her gloves on and adjust her stirrups while on. Brynn caught him looking, and he turned his head away. That was a sign he wanted to say something, but didn't know how.

They finally stopped looking at each other in silence and walked down to the trails. There were three different trails. A normal w/t/c trail, a trail with lots of fun logs to jump, and a trail that was just really long for galloping/cantering.

"Let's go to the second one!" Brynn said, excited. Greyson laughed.

"Sure," He agreed. They walked to the second one, then Brynn picked up a sitting trot. She paused about 20 meters before the first jump was to be, according to the map.

"Watch this, jumper." Brynn remarked. Greyson looked towards her. Brynn asked Salem to do a passage trot. She picked it up well. Sometimes, she passage was hard to sit, but now it was alright. There was no posting to this, of course.

Greyson watched them do this for roughly 12 meters before picking up a piaffe. Greyson had no idea that Salem could do this, so he was surprised. They trotted in place for a few more minutes before picking up canter to a jump. About 3 meters before the jump, Brynn decided to be a daredevil and ask for a low gallop. Salem of course listened, and they flew over the nice big log.

"That was amazing!" Greyson exclaimed. Brynn smiled. Greyson and Confident came bounding towards the log, and with an immaculate jumping position, they flew over it as well. They continued to do this for a few more minutes, about 80 minutes.

"Phew, that was fun." Brynn exclaimed, wiping sweat off her forehead. For early December, the weather was still strangely humid.

"Hey Brynn..." Greyson asked, cautiously.

"Yeah babe?" Brynn replied, in a happy mood. Despite the horrible situation with Stolen, it was not life-threatening and for the most part, he would heal. She was trying not to look too stressed as well.

"What if you entered Confident Lair into the Hampton Classic instead?" He asked. Brynn slowed down Salem.

"But, no, wait, you won't enter, I couldn't do that to you, you…" Brynn trailed off. She DID want to go to the Hampton classic. It was her dream, but there was a chance she could enter next year. She didn't want Greyson to miss out because of her.
