Chapter 1: Struggle Un-Rewarded chp1

A sharp crack streaked through the air. The heavy earth covering me made the scream sound dull, I pulled and pushed with all my body to wrestle myself away. As I broke the surface of the heavy earth boots stomped me down trying to press me back into oblivion. Sound began to become clear as I heard shouting and impacts from above. Sharp and blunt strikes barraged my body, from three awful people. Chad and his two pawns, they for various reasons hate me. I managed to blindly grab a wooden sword as it swung, and I crushed it in my hand, using my innate mana in my body.

A curse was vomited out by whoever I broke the sword off, and then its jagged edge cutting my arm now. The two others sped up their onslaught, their training weapons hitting my back repeatedly. On a really heavy strike I swung my arm and slapped the ground causing a wave of mud to form. I spun around and stood, the three idiots now covered in mud. However, I already was running low on my energy, I being the weakest fighter in the class.

I took a sharp breath in and my ribs hurt, and my left arm hurt, I was cut. "Chad, do you really have to do this today? It looks like you're already muddy enough." I threw the quick out trying to get him to back down. However I was wrong in thinking that.

"My sister isn't here to save you. You dull-eyed failure." Chad rushed towards me, I threw my fist out in the direct path he was moving. My fist matching his pace it would only be a moment until the impact, I used my mana I had left to activate my unique skill. I screamed my skills name in my very soul to force the last drops of my reserve, my fist glowed with energy and Chad's face was almost touching it. Then his body twisted and contorted himself in an inhuman way. "Dear magica, you're an idiot." He moved like fabric in a breeze and wrapped his body around my arm and then cracked. "Now you lose your arm." He twisted and I felt my skill complete and ripped my elbow apart and my shoulder blade began to crack, the pain was unbelievable.

I managed to throw him off and slid across the ground a few feet. My arm is completely limp now. "Chad, are you crazy, back off you psychopath." I barked at him, wincing in pain, but I wouldn't let him know that. "Look Chad, I will let you off this time, and not have your sister kick your butt if you let up now. This is a spar not breaking each other's bodies for no reason." I took a quick glance around and I noticed people watching my fellow students who know this is wrong. But they all look down on me because of my gray eyes, a sign of magic the brighter the eyes. "From what I see you have maybe a minute before the teacher has to stop pretending he doesn't see anything." I heard some voices from the people not hiding their hate for me.

"Oh, don't worry I am almost done." He glared at me with so much hate you wouldn't think he was a 16 year old kid, then again I was 16 as well and most people think fighting until you were bloody wouldn't be normal. As I was distracted with that thought I heard a whistling sound and tried to duck, but I was late. The heavy wooden club struck my arm and I felt the numb arm flare to life, as if hell was consuming it. The crack of my bone clearly pierced the air. I screamed the pain so extreme I couldn't help it. "Oh Chester, you can struggle all you want to follow us, stand in our shadows or whatever you think." He paused for a moment to take a deep breath, his poker face broke a little showing pain. "You will never be worth the mud we step in." He kicked me down, "So why don't you lay there with your superior."

I blacked out and thought about life. Passing out from pain is never easy, no-matter how many times it happens. Well anyway back onto our topic of thought, I'm in this situation because my best friend's brother is a complete piece of garbage. Who enjoys beating me because he feels insecure. Well because his sister, my best (and only) friend, is a genius.

When the fog of unconsciousness started to fade away I noticed the large amount of pain was mostly gone. "Ugh, oh it doesn't hurt as much as I thought." I shifted my weight a little, keeping my eyes shut still, feeling my surroundings. I found it soft, and my shirt was missing. I started to open them and saw the bright light. "Dang it Doc, can't you turn the lights down." I groaned that the person really needs a girlfriend.

I felt a sharp pinch in my thigh and a gruff voice I've grown used to speaking scolded me. "Chester, you do realize that your body is not infinitely repairable. Also I see that grin your making fun of me again." he sighed again "and you should really worry about yourself now. Especially with the Job ritual coming up soon, you should focus on your growth." He nagged me like usual, I winced again as he jabbed another needle in me. My eyes now fully adjusted. I locked eyes with him. His clear blue eyes stared at me with a sad look. "Chester, I know you think you know what you're doing. Or maybe you've given up on yourself. But you should strive to do better. You only have a few months…."

I tuned him out after a while. And tested my body flexing various parts. My right wrist hurt but that's expected since I was working out before the spar. My legs were stiff like I hadn't moved in a number of hours, but my left arm was entirely numb still. I interrupted Doc ``Say how's my arm, I think I messed it up pretty bad this time. Still probably not my worst injury." I joked with him, but it really hadn't been the worst injury yet, one time they had to reattach an arm. I was doing 'extra' studies and a Blood-Bear kind of took it off.

"Look Chester you may think that, but this time it really was bad." He seemed to be looking inside of me, his gaze surprisingly sharp considering his looks. "Each injury for the most part is not very bad, you know besides the elbow." He waved his clipboard at my arm. "But all of them together… It's not very good, honestly I wanna keep you here for a whole month."

"Whoa there Doc. The ritual isn't very far away, I can't be off my feet for that long. I need to grow strong enough so the ritual will at least give me warrior as a job."

"I know Chester, which is why I haven't drugged you into a coma so you recover. My magic only goes so far." He signed again, probably frustrated at me. " I understand you don't get along with your fellow classmates. However, you could… Maybe, not pick fights with them anymore I mean your a…" He cut himself off with a slight stutter.

"Look Nox… I mean Doc, don't worry I know I'm a second class citizen here, barely any mana no matter how much I train, meditate, or learn I just don't increase my levels." It was frustrating after all, in a world where magic and miracles exist. Who wants to hire a person with no magical talent. "Even with that, I don't want a lot. I just wanna do what I am good at."

"Well Chester, what I can do is provide you with some strong medicine and have you wear some gear that will repair your bones. The bone mender, I hate that name, whoever invented it really should have named it better." I smirked a little, Nox didn't joke often. "Oh yeah I just remembered your brother sent me a message from the battlefield asking me about you because SOMEONE doesn't respond to his letters."

"Yeah I should reply, but its so annoying, no one really understands what it's like having a genius as a brother, or a sister, or a dad for a matter of fact. It's like all the talent was squeezed out from my siblings first then I just got a stupidly durable body." I moved my shoulder around feeling coming back into them properly now. "What did he have to say?"

"Well alot about you. You think he would want to know about the guy he spent years in the academy with. He mentioned unlocking his second class already, your right on the fact he is a genius twenty-four and already a dual-classer. It's crazy to think that, but I know a few people with talent like that." He looked at me and then the door, he must hear someone coming. "You know a few like that too, so you must not hate being talented in itself." I agreed and started to get changed.
